On occasion when I was in a WiFi dead zone, I used my old Sony Ericsson phone (which was unlocked, which may have been why this worked) as a tether to network access with Cingular (totally for near emergencies; I didn't have a data plan with Cingular). I was a little disappointed that I couldn't do that for free with my new Droid. It was nice knowing that in a pinch, I could get access to an e-mail or an important website. On the other hand, the Droid is so full featured that if something like that happens, it will probably be OK to use it to give me the access I need (just with a smaller keyboard).
(I wonder if anyone has tried plugging a USB keyboard into the Droid...)
