east / west needs a RED flashing light. People from out of state / area dont know what is up.
years ago there was a red light. I am from out of state and I know what is going on there. its not just a problem for out of staters by locals also. the rumble strips are a good indacation of an impending stop. A road is only as safe as the person driving on it makes it safe.
From the west, driving east, the single light is dwarfed by the open environment around it. There is also a flattened perspective created, which makes it too easy to be into the intersection before you realize it. These effects are particularly problematic if it is the first time a driver is on this roadway. Because of the long history of accidents and deaths there, this intersection needs a signal specifically engineered for this location's visual characteristics.
The intersection isn't anymore dangerous than others. The speed limit is reasonable. It seems that the only problem lies with drivers who think that, for some reason, the oncoming traffic is going to stop and give them a turn to go through the intersection. If anyone can figure that out, you may have the problem solved.
The intersection is definitely not safe. If you are southbound on highway 75, you encounter a blind spot from Highway 20 eastbound traffic. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix. If the state turns it into a 4-way stop, then we have the problem of occasional motorists assuming it is still a two-way stop - not matter how hard you mark it.
Creating an elaborate interchange is a possible solution, but then you're dealing with wetlands, plus it would be quite expensive. A roundabout might be the best answer, but that also would take up much space.
The other unfortunate thing is that this is a weak cell phone reception spot. Thank goodness the rest spot still has some functioning payphones, for backup emergency.
