In response to an earlier comment, people don't make their macs look like pc's because windows can be run on a mac. Unless you own a Hackintosh, you can't run OSX on pc's. I think they are very comparable pc's, but compatability remains an issue with me (I do play games on my computer). I own a macbook, but I run windows 7 in boot camp. I also think that windows 7 is close enough to OSX that the average pc user should NOT switch to a mac. The only thing gained by switching to a mac now is a bigger price tag (unless it's a work related switch). I like both OS's, but it's annoying that you have to pay out your *** to run mac OSX. Apple should do everyone a favor and sell their next OS for $150, but they should make it compatable with everyday computers.

This poll is funny.. unless all the voters had the chance to use both platforms.

I really like some Apple's OS, but Windows is a question of habit. I have a PC and Mac are really expensive here in Brazil. I compreend that Vista was a pain in the a**, but i really like XP, so i'll keep on 7.

Funny, how Micro$oft users praise their savior "Windows 7" as if it's some innovative addition to the PC World. When in fact it's just Vista done right, with a hefty price tag I might add.

For Windows 7 to be evenly compared with Snow Leopard you would need to run Windows 7 Ultimate along side it and then it would still suck because of it's registry based structure. (unstable p.o.s) Then to top it off Windows ripped off some OSX features and tried to make them prettier. Like the dock and expose' for example.

OSX is hands down a more stable OS and it performs WAaaayyy better than any Windows OS.

Windows 7 is a nice step forward for the PC user. But, unfortunately it's still not a Mac. Funny, how you never read stories about people trying to make their Mac's look like PC's. Then, again if you want the best of both worlds you can dual boot your intel Mac and run both OS's let's see a PC do that without a blue screen of death (another feature not available with a Mac).

And, by the way. I'm an avid PC user as well. So, before you post why Windows is just so awesome use a Mac first an then form an educated opinion.

I've got Windows 7 running in VirtualBox on my MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. Windows 7 is far and away the best version of *Windows* ever, but Snow Leopard still kicks its butt on the playground.

Windows 7, as all versions of Windows, keeps it's convoluted UI. It's been improved in Windows 7, but Microsoft's serious lack UI know-how still shines through. Simply Microsoft is getting there, but Apple has always been the master of UI design and the title has definitely not been stripped in this latest incarnation of Windows.

I never used both, so I couldn't decide. I've been a PC user for 10 years & few months ago I felt that I need to enter the MAC world. I feel that I should give it a try specially that I'm a tech person. Therefore, my next laptop will be a MAC. Of course, I have plans to add Windows 7 OS to my future MAC, but that's after squeezing the hella use of my Snow Leopard.

I have never used a Mac, but wanted to report that I have been using the RTM of windows 7 for over a moth now, whith a hardware that should have been adequate:

    Intel DP965LT, Intel Core2 at 2.33GHz, 4GB Kingston DDR667, Nvidia 8600GT with 256MB, and a Maxtor SATA2 drive

Yet Windows freezes every now and then for no apparent reason, some times even before reaching the login screen, and I have to reboot several times.

I have used that same hardware with Windows XP and Debian Lenny, and it was stable and speedy on both.

For example, in Windows 7 the game GRID is less responsive than it was in XP, where I never experienced any problem at all. In Windows 7 sometimes it seems like things are in slow motion. I am downloading the latest Nvidia Drivers, but to be fair, I used old drivers with XP with no problems, so if Windows 7 was better than XP as MS claims, the NVIDIA drivers built in Windows 7 should have been enogh to have a similar gaming experience, which clearly has not been the case.

Been using Win7 for about 6 months and really it's not as impressive as people are hyping it up to be. It's certainly better than Vista (or what it should have been) but it's still Windows and comes with all the usual crap to be expected from MS.

I have been using both for years and currently running Snow Leopard and have just tried out Windows 7. I'll admit, Windows 7 has a few features I think it's needed for sometime now. But I still choose the Mac OS as my preferred OS for the same reasons as before in other versions...

Mac OS has a cleaner interface, a bit more intuitive and just doesn't have all that junk attached to it like the Windows OS

I reject the question as nebulous and silly. No qualifications were given, no parameters set. Is this to infer a physical fight? Obviously not, but that would have been a more entertaining question. To try and determine which OS is just plain better is like asking, which is better, a fork or a spoon?" Both are particularly well suited for very different purposes. Between the ambiguity of the question and the typo in the first sentence, I expect more from Mashable.

The old saying goes that two things you never discuss are religion and politics, and after 11 years on both Macs and PCs (and a couple of one-night-stands with SuSe and RedHat) I vote that we add a third: OS preference. This is a battle without end. Hopefully we as consumers will win because it forces both to give us better product. Still gotta give it to Win 7 51% to 49% just for learning curve for new users who don't use iTunes or download iPhone apps.

    1. Snow is $29, 7 is all over the map...
    2. Snow is faster, cleaner, and more intuitive.
    3. Both have issues with upgrading, it's a wash.
    4. Snow can run 32 or 64 bit, 7 will cost substantially more for 64 bit.
    5. Comparing hardware specs, it's a wash. Apple doesn't sell low-end hardware.
    6. I don't use my computer to play video games, that's what my 360 is for.

I've actually used both OS, and I've got to give the nod to Snow Leopard.
I think Snow Leopard is a better fit for 99% of the computer illiterate out there.
At least from an admin standpoint, I prefer friends and family to use osx. Makes my life much easier...

    @tom I agree.

People are seeing Snow (and Apple) as a user-friendly thing, glossy, trendy. Well, ok, but when you know how to use Windows 7 (and all previous Win OS), when you realize that the kernel, the compatibility, the opensource and free accessibility is more important than the apple way of life, you just buy a PC and do what you want on it.

It could crash, but whatever... :P

I only moved from PC to Mac about 2 years ago - about when software compatibility became (nearly) true, eg iWork & Office. I am a huge fan of the Mac notebook. And Apple has one word in its UX/UI dev that Microsoft hasn't ... "simplicity". We have a Win XP box at home. I haven't tried Win7 so can't compare but is it more stable than XP or Vista? That was/is a MAJOR problem for me. I recently paid to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard and am pleased with the results - much faster (and speed was already pretty good). I think the consumer is going to be the winner now that the O/S war is hotting up again. I'm pleased Microsoft is back in the running. Remember we're talking about consumers here coz, let's face it, any heavyweight user is using Ubuntu anyway.

Comparing Windows and Mac OS is like comparing apples and oranges.

I am a very visual person and one of I guess the rare vista fans . Win7 visually reminds me of win95with a touch of vista . Yuk .

@Preetham - lol "While Snow isn't a huge shift from Leopard itself" haha exactly and you paid $29 for a service update. What a joke. "Windows 7 pales in comparison"

    Please -
    1. I want to drive my touch screen device with Snow - FAIL
    2. I want to play any sort of any game that aint shit with Snow - FAIL
    3. I want to purchase a PC for under $800 - FAIL
    4. I want to build my own PC and run Snow - FAIL
    5. I want free OS services updates - FAIL

The list goes on and on. Perhaps, more accurately "Snow pales in comparison". Your a fanboy I get. FYI - I have Leopard (not snow) and Win 7 x64. It shits over Mac so hard that I only use iPhone and iMovie on iMac now.

  • vjk2005 - 14 years ago

Snow. Though as you can see I'm typing this on Win 7 > http://bit.ly/1dfh1d and have been using it for about 8 months now, Services on Snow is just way too cool --->- http://bit.ly/2onVDP and then Win 7 still doesn't have Quicklook, Spaces and a bunch of other stuff.

  • Fletcher Tomalty - 14 years ago

I voted for Snow Leopard because I happen to have used both, but I think this is pretty much just a Mac vs. PC thing, where people just vote based on what they use. Oh well.

  • Jerrett - 14 years ago

    What a stupid poll :D

  • Preetham Venkky - 14 years ago

@Jonathan - I think maybe you should revisit Snow Leopard. While Snow isn't a huge shift from Leopard itself; Windows 7 still pales in comparison. The reason you might like Windows 7 is because it is definitely far better than Vista and that marked difference 'seems' to overpower all.

  • Jonathan Bejarano - 14 years ago

I think that most of the people haven't used Windows 7 that are voting for Snow Leopard. Try it, it is awesome!
