If any of the folks who lament that the school teachers/principal did not use their own common sense to make this judgment would investigate further, they would learn that the state rules are hard and fast. The state regulations do not permit exercise of "common sense" judgment. ONLY the judgment of the STATE is permitted. To act with reason and personal thought on the scene would mean termination with zero tolerance for common sense judgment. The voters of the state must act to remove this total state control over the school operations.

This is another example of misjudgment to be sure, however it is not out of place with educators other aims - telling our kids that 'consumption' is bad, that any type of 'weapon' they deem makes the child a terrorist or a danger to others, that the president should be praised in song and that learning is about doing what all the other kids (and their teachers) are capable of.
Our education system is broken because of tenure. Choice and competition in educators makes better teachers and smarter kids. Tenure allows slack educators (if you can call them that) to persist in an 'entitled' job and actually drive good teachers away b/c they can't stand the hypocrisy.
Parents - wake up and either take back your kids and home-school them or demand that our schools actually educate our kids. Bad decisions like the one made in this case are the canary in the coal mine - only the bird is dead...

If the teachers and administrators of our schools are not qualified to tell the difference between a kid with a boy scout knife and a genuine threat how can we expect them to make good decisions in a true crisis. Every one involved should be removed from their position and replaced with people who can make intelligent decisions. Intelligent in this case would be to confiscate the tool explaining to him why, and return it to him when he leaves school property that day. Add one phone call to a parent and call it good.
