I am an Obama supporter and do like him very much but if as the President of the Nobel Peace Prize committee cited one of their reasons for choosing Obama was "for his effort" then this award is all the more ridiculous. If they are talking about effort then what about all the effort that Bill Clinton put into coming so close to achieving peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
This award was not meant to be based on "effort" but rather on achievement - the effort is definitely there in what Obama is trying to do but the achievement is yet to come. Especially, since the nomination for this award closed on February 1, 2009, a mere 11 days into Obama's presidency when even the effort was not quite there yet because it was early days by then.

Theodore Roosevelt's efforts that garnered the prize led to war with Japan some three decades later. Woodrow Wilson's misguided blundering set the stage for World War Two in Europe, not to mention forty years of cold war with the Soviets. What future disasters do the contemporary fumblings of Barry the Pretender presage, not just for the united States, but an unsuspecting world?
The Nobel Committee is a bunch of preening, self-important, fools.

I have read several places now that the deadline for nomination for this award was only 10 days into Obama's presidency. If that is true then it is truly absurd.

Don't you have to actually accomplish something to get a Nobel prize? What exactly has Obama done? (nothing)

Those who are losing it over the Nobel Prize simply don't realize what it means to wage peace.

Pathetic!

I don't think I can take this prize seriously anymore. There were people nominated--like Morgan Tsvangirai and Hu Jia--who actually saved lives and stopped wars. Fox is going to have a field day with the Carter-Gore-Obama pattern.

Which peace was that?

I like Obama, I voted for him, and think he's heading us in the right direction, but...one good speech, and outstretched hand, to the Muslim world should not be all you have to do to win such a prestigious award.
He is supervising two wars and allowing/abetting the cover-up of torture and war crimes. How in the world does that qualify you as a peace-maker?!
If anyone had any doubts about the vacuity of the Peace Prize committee.. this should nail it.
Pathetic? Beyond words!
