this war is not yet Vietnam but could easily become so. The left, just like in Nam, has always cared more about the enemy's wellbeing than it's own soldiers. If we turn our boy's loose and let them do what they have to do we can easily win. Unfortunately we have a "president" who says that victory isn't neccesarily our goal in Afganistan. ???????

No, the war in Iraq is turning into Vietnam. DUH.

An honourable pullout from Afghanistan seems difficult for the US because of the pressure from the arms lobby.

I don't think the war in Iraq is at all turning into what Vietnam was. Vietnam was a massacre, one in which we were losing sometimes up to 500 soldiers a week. The term "War in Iraw" is inappropriately used in my opinion. This is no war, far from it in fact.

It is a war, like every war. just in a different place, with different (same?) players, with a new goal and a new name. Sons and daughters, good men and women, are dying in a foreign land. And they will continue to do so. To win a war, one side must slaughter the other and rape their lands....until someone decides their objective, and the death & destruction, are unnecessary or no longer tolerable - for the time being or forever.

Is one enough or is one too many, before we say, "No More"?

The War in Afganistan is on it's way to become another Vietnam, which would be devestating and embarassing to the United States. How is it that the most powerful country in the world cannot crush rebels that hide in caves and mountains? However, although i do not think that the United States and it's allies should pull out of Afghanistan, I think that we should pay more attention to something that might help out our cause in Afghanistan: capturing Osama bin Laden. Capturing the #1 enemy of our country would be a major blow to the rebellion in Afghanistan, many of who are part of bin Laden's Taliban. The defeat of thier leader, would make the 8 years that we've been in Afghanistan more justifiable, and we would then know that the thousands of lives we've lost on the battlefield would not be in vain. If we can't find bin Laden, then Afghanistan might well become Vietnam Part II, which I'm sure no american person wants to go through.

Becoming? We've been involved over there for how many years, now? "No, no, no! Iraq won't be another Vietnam." Yeah. Thank God the body count is nothing like Vietnam!

2009-10-09 00:28:04 ET

This is not and CAN NOT ever by like Vietnam....body count or location... none of that is what this is all about.....I lived through the Vietnam years and I still don't even know just what our purpose was...I know we must have had one but it got lost.... BUT this WAR NO ONE should forget why... even unlike Iraq in Afghanistan is where the people who were involved with the ATTACK on OUR OWN SOIL that KILLED OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS there fore this can never be like Vietnam.... my son will soon be in Afghanistan... he has chosen to stand up for our country and not retreat just because everyone is JUST SICK AND TIRED OF THIS WAR AND WANT TOMOVE ON...... which is just what the enemy is counting on...like they said the American people have developed a soft belly and has no guts to stay and win..... and some of these comments seem to show they may just be right.... LORD helps us....

2009-10-09 03:24:51 ET

Remarks here about the body count only reference American casualties in Vietnam. The United States was directly responsible for between 4.5 to 6 million Southeast Asians killed. And Nixon and Kissinger wanted to nuke the entire country, but relented ONLY because of political pressure at home and abroad (the no-good lefties, as some would say). So, tell the tale of American heroism, but don't tell the real story of why the United States was in Vietnam. And don't tell the tale of Afghanistan either. Call it 9/11, if you will. Or heroism. Or liberation. Don't call it imperialism. Don't call it invasion.

Choose your own adventure. Create a myth.

Does America really remember swhat happened on our soil, in three different locations, 8 years ago? I think that for some, 9/11 is a day in history that has no real effect on our present day lives. Explain that to the little ones who are just coming of age to understand that men full of hate for our country and what it stands for, wanted to kill our people and our way of life. I'm so tired of it not being politically correct anymore to fly our flag or to sing God Bless America because people on the left side of the aisle don't find it appealing. What about war is? War was declared on the United States of America on 9/11/01 just as it was when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

As for Iraq? Why doesn't anyone seem to remember that Saddam Hussein committed mass murder on his own people? How many hundreds of thousands of bodies were found in mass graves that were initiated by the mad man of Baghdad? It was OUR men and women who bravely made their way into the city to begin to give it back to its own people.

Any loss of life in any way is a tragedy. I hate war. I wish there never was a war to begin with. But, this is a world that does not yet belong to Jesus Christ, and until that day, we have to understand; there will always be war. We have to conduct it in the most of humane conditions.

I love God, I love United States of America, and I pray that our president gets a clue.

Thank you sully nug for your fine words.... I let my emotions get the best of me. I do believe we did the right thing in Iraq I just didn't want to cloud the issue since the question was comparing Vietnam to Afghanistan.... and it is know and accepted by "most" that Afghanistan war is about the 9/11 attack here and for that reason a lone I feel that Vietnam and Afghanistan can not even be compared to each other.....I got emotional.... the first war with Iraq I watched on CNN while I held my newborn son in my arms little did I know that now at 18 years that same son is soon to be in Afghanistan and we are trying to now move out of Iraq.... it hurts to hear people talk about this war and wanting to be done with it like an old pair of shoes or an out of style dress or it's just such an inconvenience and a pain at the airport.... "why can't we just leave them alone and come home" OR the "what's taking us so long OMG they live in caves and we can't get them?" They fight like terrorist and we can't do like they do 'cause the world wide press will rip the US into shreds... this is warfare like none we have ever had fight..... again they don't fight by rules and we must..... it leaves me heart sick...... thank you again sully nug for your post. I will pray too for our country, leadership and all of our soldiers...... Lila

The problem with Nam was that the U.S. essentially brought itself down to the enemy's level. Targets where severely restricted, such as key factories and bridges. The U.S. basically fought a half-hearted war till the end when bombing restrictions where lifted. The people weren't supportive (understandable), and even the government favored talks of peace over finishing the war quickly and decisively.
I have high doubts that Afghanistan will turn into anything like Nam for a few reasons.
1. The U.S. government is serious about dealing terrorism (as far as I can tell, most U.S. citizens are opposed to the war on terror, yet they don't want another 9/11... huh) so any chance they get to blast terrorists, they take.
2. Geographical features are vastly different. Nam was difficult because of the forest cover and not being able to track large enemy troop movements. Afgan is a desert. Sure there are caves to hide in, but the terrorists in the caves can't do much.
3. Well, I suppose the best arguement would be to look at the casualty count. Around 1,500 friendly casualties, with the count beginning in 2001. Compare that to Nam, with 58,178 over sixteen years. Hmmm... you do the math.

2009-10-09 14:33:34 ET

My opinion: we are there....if the President would MOVE-Make decisions in regard to the information given by those who are there ,know what is needed and give necessary tools to fight with ,,we may get the heck out of there sooner. my concern is what they are fighting with how old are these weapons-do they even send in new stuff for them to use.......each war is fought differently but bottom line is those who are there...know what is needed..........if we do nothing , our sons-daughters are in danger...(decisions should have been made already)

Where was the Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq?

Morse
2009-10-09 17:57:08 ET

You commies who said yes. The USA just shifted its concentration, as well as set a 2010 timeline. Events have already been shifting in our direction. As Samuel L. Jackson said in 'The Rules of Engagement" movie, "Waste the mutherf***ers !!!!!!"

2009-10-09 23:06:24 ET

>> "Waste the mutherf***ers !!!!!!"

If there is a god, here's hoping he or she is merciful enough to spare the rest of the world the privilege of American liberation.

no..........i don't think that the war in Vietnam posed as great a danger to the US. Agendas were different back then...fighting take-overs of countries that longed to be free was the goal...(perhaps)...ha ha, unless they had a lot of oil????? perhaps that was the last war that was ever fought by the US that seemed to make a bit of sense...or would have seemed to have some tiny bit of morallity within the field...........but let me not digress here...agendas have changed very much....incredibly so...all over the world...so who is pullin' the strings right now (?)...you betcha, i'm watchin..............there is no comparison, unless we were all set up for the last thirty some odd years...hmmmmm(?)...I...as an american am "Watchin"...and hopefully will still be here when all the dust settles...hmmmm?

No war the U.S. fights, no matter where, can ever possibly be "another Vietnam" ... unless it is fought by another largely draftee military.

n d sharma, exactly where is the "honor" of pulling out of a war that was started when we were attacked and 3,000 Americans murdered? The arms manufacturers have nothing to do with us being in there. The fact that we haven't had a decisive victory that even the enemy has to admit to(I know that is redundant since no victory is a victory until the enemy admits it) has nothing to do with arms manufacturers, that lies with weak politicians that would rather see dead American soldiers than offended Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters.
Vietnam was a case of the US attempting to help South Vietnam in their fight to avoid being forced into communism. South Vietnam asked the US for help, we helped very little. We gave them hope, then dashed that hope because of politicians and leftwing nutcases like Jane Fonda. It is the leftwing nuts that are making this war like Vietnam by not allowing our soldiers to do their jobs the way it needs to be done.
We need to get over the idea of civilized warfare, and get back to what our grandfathers did in WWII.

War in Afghanistan for calition is turning into the same way as for Russia 20-30 years ago. Increase in number of troops will just in increase the death toll on both sides.

2009-10-10 21:52:59 ET

It is not the same because the public doesn't care, especially the youth. Now, institute a draft and things will be like Vietnam.

The only similarity in Afghanistan with Vietnam is that the Talibans like the Vietcongs are fighting for their lives, their land and their way of living while the Americans are fighting for a propaganda promoted by the government. Fighting and killing will not wipe the Taliban's way of life. It will only hardened them and make them survived better. The main difference is that with the help of technology, the American casualties is minimal.

The world has a short memory. No one remembers life in Afghanistan during the Taliban years. The longer the US stays in Afghanistan, the more they will be associated with the hardship in Afghanistan. US will eventually withdraw after spending billlions of tax payers' money while making an elite few extremely rich.

The War in Afghanistan is on it's way to become another Vietnam, which would be shocking and make ashamed to the United States. How is it that the most powerful country in the world cannot crush Afghan Mujahidins? However, although i do not think that the United States and it’s allies should pull out of Afghanistan, we would then know that the thousands of lives’ve lost on the battlefield would not be in ineffective. then Afghanistan might well become Vietnam Part II, which I'm sure no american person wants to go through.

God bless this god bless that! all you do kill people. How come you justiify this war ? is this because your' a patriot ? shame on you. Patriots always talk of dying for their country and never of killing for their country. ~Bertrand Russell, attributed

2009-10-11 10:01:19 ET

UWIUW do you live in the US? If so shame on you. you seem to have things backwards. The "justify" is simple terrorist came in to our country and acted like the cowards they were and killed thousands of men, women and children as they were just doing their every day job at three locations on Sept. 11, 2001. Why? Because they hate the way we live in our own country! And you must know absolutely NOTHING about our"patriots" their are NOT wanting to die for our country they want to live and keep it SAFE for them and their family.... and you say "never of killing for their country" you got a point there because they don't want to kill anyone..... and when they do.... they carry that pain with them for the rest of their lives...... it haunts them..... unlike the the Taliban who sing and dance to celibate the killing they do in the name of their God..... even say we accept their God or they will save us by KILLING US.... SO SHAME ON YOU AND IF YOU LIVE IN THIS COUNTRY AND YOU THINK WE ARE SO WRONG THEM HOP THE NEXT FLIGHT TO AFGHANISTAN.

My farther a WW2 vet and my brothers fought in Vietnam and one lost his life fighting for his County, Afghanistan is not Vietnam. I for one think if we had never had gone into Iraq and took our eyes off the prize this war would have been over by now.
