My feeling is that the person who makes it all the way through the consolation, having lost only once, had to defy about the same odds as the undefeated player. (It's about the same probability of going 6-0 as going 8-1.) So now imagine the 8-1 player defeats the 6-0 player in the finals, it doesn't make sense to me that someone with a 9-1 record must now play the 6-1 player in another game. Who would you bet was the stronger player? In fact, I believe Bob Koca has seen simulations which support this too.
