MY PERSONAL OPINION IS THIS: IF WE (CHAMORRO'S) HAVE TO ABIDE BY U S LAWS AND GUAM IS A TERRITORY OF THE U S, THEN WHY SHOULD'NT WE? EVEN OUR LANGUAGE IS "ENGLISH".... (AND WE HAVE OUR OWN!-CHAMORRO)
Your right we should be allowed to vote but here we are 2009 and cannot vote for the president nor do we have a voting member in Congress. Mrs. Bordallo is doing the best she can but she needs to be able to have a vote before she will be able to make a real impact in Congress. Guam affairs are actually under the Secretary of the Interior who works for the President. It's nice that the Assitant Secretary Mr. Babauta is from Guam but that is a political position that will change as the President changes, we need equal rights for Guam we need to have a say in who is our President and be able to affect legislation through a voting member of congress. I say "Equal Rights for Guam."
We, the People of Guam, have stood side by side as "citizens" of the United States fighting and maintaining what we all cherish and that is "Freedom!" We've fought in numerous campaigns overseas returning with wounds that will never cure. Some lost their lives standing in front of harms way so that "our children" would share the freedom we still have! As a Veteran of Desert Storm, "I SALUTE OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN THE ARMED FORCES, HOME AND ABROAD,FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND SERVICES!!" Count the many volunteers from Guam and compare it with the rest of the country. Can someone see the ratio? Yet with all that is mentioned in the past and present, we still have no say or count in the White House. I wrote this not only because of my experience in the military, but because of my love for "Our Island and Our People." I flew the Guam flag during the storm and never took it down until another "Chamorro, 1SG Borja" asked me to take it down. And that was after the Company Commander sent individuals telling me to bring down the flag from my vehicle in which I refused. With all that said, I feel that if we can can shed sweat, tears and blood for our freedom, then why not allow our vote to count up in the White House like the rest of the "U.S. Citizens?" Make It Happen!
Sincerely,
Herbert Gofigan Jr
U.S. Army (Ret.)
