I wish the *real* unemployment rate was measured more accurately and discussed. The reported rate is somewhat useless, just like the official inflation rate that actually excludes many things people buy because their pricing is too volatile and would lead to an inflation rate that makes people seasick.

The real unemployment rate would include those working part-time jobs because they can't find full-time employment, those who've become self-employed after failing to find a job, and those who've just given up looking for a job. I've heard anecdotal reports that the real unemployment rate is somewhere around 16%.

Think about that - 16 out of 100 people who are able and interested in working are unable to find satisfactory employment. Think about the emotional burden on those people. Think about how the financial impact of that ripples through society.

The hundreds of $billions spent on two wars and bailing out companies who made stupid bets could have been much better spent on job training, tax incentives for companies to hire people, and ways to help the self-employed start and grow businesses.
