I am a taxpayer with BCBS Health Insurance. If Pres. Obama gets his way I will lose benefits and pay taxes as I will be considered at the high end of the pay scale because I work two jobs. NO THANK YOU. Also I am from Massachusetts where we have required health insurance and guess what all the illegals get free health insurance by going to the emergency room. They have no deductibles like the rest of us and neither do the poor. I say MAKE EVERY ONE WORK - EVEN IF THEY DO COMMUNITY SERVICE TO PAY FOR THEIR SHARE. THEY WILL BE SCREAMING NO WAY. I hear this all the time. I do not want to do community service (at $10.00/hr toward their debt) or get a job so they go and sit in jail on my tax dollar. I had one twenty year old tell me it is embarassing to shovel snow to pay his debts. WHAT THE POOR OR ILLEGALS DO NOT WANT TO DO IS WORK. THEY WANT EVERYTHING AND GET EVERYTHING FOR FREE. COME TO MA WHERE most PEOPLE ARE DISABLED OR UNEMPLOYED AND GETTING EVERYTHING FOR FREE. Yes, cell phones, cars, housing, food, heat, insurance, etc. The BEST PART IS THEY ARE HOME ALL DAY RESTING AND SMOKING THEIR WEED PLAYING THEIR LOUD MUSIC ALL NIGHT WHILE I COME HOME TIRED FROM WORK. SO YES KEEP SCREWING ME AND I WILL TRY FOR DISABILITY LIKE THE REST OF THE PEOPLE IN MY STATE. YES, I CAN BE BIPOLAR AND HAVE ANXIETY DISORDER LIKE THE REST OF THEM. PRES OBAMA SAID HE WANTED EVERYONE TO DO VOLUNTEER WORK - WELL IF I HAVE TO PAY THEY SHOULD HAVE TO WORK. ALSO WHY IS THE PRESIDENT AND HIS FAMILY GETTING THE H1N1 FLU SHOT. They should be the first in line and they are not; any one wonder why.
As a middle class person I am sick of getting screwed for working and supporting the rest. I should have gotten pregnant and gone on welfare and I tell everyone to. Why not. That is where this country is going. SO YES KEEP SCREWING THE FEW WORKERS YOU HAVE LEFT IN THIS COUNTRY.

Hey MNT
Your really smart fair system let's see take from persons pocket against their will was called stealing last I checked and that's exactly what this health care going to do forceing a poor person to that to rich to be called poor and to poor to afford health care don't worry if they don't gave health care your fair system will fine that poor rich person if they don't get health care
on top of that it's makeing a person that has worked hard went to school studied to be what ever and make it like our doctors big business folks ect not all of them was handed a golden spoon some went from rags to riches with great ideas why do you want their money if you don't like a person product or business don't buy or use it or start your own
This health care is stupid they can't even fix what is broken
if Obama could fix social security or Medicare then I could see starting up a Heath care system like he is embarking on

There are a lot of excellent arguments, both for and against Obama's Socialistic health care efforts. And, of course, there are a lot of really bad arguments being tossed around, too.

But your opinion, or your mother's opinion, or Nancy Pelosi's opinion, or even my opinion are all totally irrelevant.

The ONLY legitimate perspective about this important issue that matters in this Great Nation is the Constitution. And the Constitution simply DOES NOT ALLOW THE FED GOVT TO GET INVOLVED IN HEALTH CARE ISSUES. So why are they even debating the issue?

If we get ANY FORM of federal health care, it is only because we have had a quiet revolution and America is no longer a Constitutional Republic.

It's all the abuses that bother me. Because the government has not proven its ability to run any program without tons of fraud and inefficiencies, it's a mighty dangerous thing to let them into this very personal part of our lives. There needs to be a number of reforms in our healthcare system, but a government run system should not be a part of that.

I've seen a lot of abuse in the system. One man, who lived near us, refused to take on a job because he wanted the system to pay for the hospital bill when his live-in girlfriend's second baby needed to be delivered. Before the baby was born, he was busted for running drugs and domestic abuse. Before that, the welfare system sent him to a job training course, but he skipped most of the classes, so that was more money down the drain.

The point? Throwing the hard-earned money of diligent workers into this program will not be helping the real problem. And, no one is capable of changing the hearts of all those who sponge off the system.

To add to the problem, there are also good, hard-working people who simply cannot afford to pay for insurance for a variety of valid reasons.

I don't have a comprehensive answer, but do know that a government run system will only make things worse. We need reform, but not big government.

I am using medicare a,b and d, Medicare D was to help with medications but so far this year (September 2009) I was billed $1,200.00. I paid into a system that is worthless. The same people who developed this worthless system wants us to trust them in developing another useless system.

In many govenment offices they us dell, hp and other types of printers which cost alot of money. With my Non-Profit corporation I us a Kodak Printer which I can print 400 full color copies for only $20.00. We must stop them from wasting our money.

I think that taxes should not be taken out of where we work but what we buy. Meaning raise the taxes on everything sold and take away all taxes at the work place. This means all the drug dealers, criminals and lazy sob's will also have to pay taxes. By doing this our insurance problem will get better because more taxes are being paid.

If you are on welfare and your child is breaking the laws and costing the tax payers even more money, you should be cut off of all benefits. Or have your child in a troubled youth program.

I live in a socialist country - Norway. I am American and have known the benefit of both privatized insurance and national health. I also lived in England. Frankly, most people don't know what they're talking about. National health is simply a safety net. No one is threatening to take away your insurance. But wouldn't you like it to be cheaper? Don't you ever feel like you are getting ripped off by insurance companies?

For the person who says the constitution doesn't guarantee health care - it also doesn't guarantee clean water, clean air, paved roads or most of the other things you enjoy on a daily basis. Should we remove all of those because they aren't spelled out in the constitution? Should we get rid of Social Security? Medicare? Should we regulate nothing and let the free market dictate everything? Look at the current financial crisis - how can anyone argue that the market will take care of itself? All a national program would guarantee is fair access and fair prices. If you don't want those, why not?

And why is everyone always so worried about their taxes. We pay the lowest taxes in the industrialized world. Yes, sometimes they seem high. And yes, some of the things that you pay for you disagree with. But, have you ever lived somewhere that has no tax system? I have. And let me tell you. When people do not pay into their system and a government does not provide anything for its citizens, the country becomes a mess.

In Norway, we pay 50% of our income to the government. 50%! And no one complains. Why? Because we all benefit - even ex-patriots like me. We have absolutely free health care and dental care. A woman who has a baby gets a year off paid and the husband gets six weeks. Young people go to college anywhere they choose for free - including living expenses. Do people cheat? Absolutely. But, the government believes that the 99% of people who do not cheat outweigh the 1% who do.

I know people are worried, but so were people when FDR put in social security. Progress is hard but it's necessary. It's going to be all right!

I simply can not fathom why anyone would believe that in an advanced, civilized society, first class health care should be privilege, not a basic human right. There is nothing more basic and essential to a functioning and flourishing society than health.

Thank you S for speaking from your experience as an ex-pat.
The multitudes of citizens have concerns about change and what (services and money) would be lost, and unfortunately, our government is run by many of them. It's almost impossible to think of the larger community when you believe your own backyard is being threatened.
I have felt the discordant nature of recently past government, and I'm ready to move toward a new vision. Oftentimes, the choices we are given can be difficult, but when one choice is to witness (unless you choose to ignore it) suffering and struggle among my neighbors, then it is easy to make a choice toward a society that supports all its people.
When I am able to see the truth for myself, I will always vote for a life of ease for everyone. Until I am conviced otherwise, our President has all of my support!

First of all, more than 50% of US citizens are already getting subsidized health care (medicare, medicaid, VA, military, native Americans and subsidies to caregivers for treating the uninsured. And you are already paying through the nose. Did you realize that Bush's Medicare Advantage program puts more than $111 Billion dollars into the pockets of Big Insurance annually, and that amount increases as insurance rates go up. That $111 billion alone would fund a great single payer system.

A single payer system doesn't have to be government run. Several of the countries with more advanced medical systems are single payer systems run by private insurance companies. But, they must abide by some rules: no pre=existing condition exclusions, no lifetime caps, decisions made by your doctors and no profit is to be made for basic insurance. You want a cadillac plan so you can get that tummy tucked? Then, you buy a more expensive plan and the insurance company makes a profit. And, their insurance companies are thriving, without the rip-off monopolies we have in the US.

The insurance companies will do anything to stop a single payer program, even if the government didn't run it--Right now they make between 20-30 percent NET profit. With the shameless assistance of those who just flat want Obama to fail, no matter what he tries to do, they seem to be running the show.

Don't believe the lies. Read HB 676--it works. Then, modify it to make it better --anything can be improved, why not start with a plan that brings us into this century?

I'm not surprised that the majority of the voters chose yes. The internet is more liberal than other forms of media.

I think health care should be provided by the government but this was just bad timing. America is dealing with wars and a recession now. Obama ought to have fixed one 1st before tackling health care.

It will be costly, and an increase in taxes is not feasible now. It will reduce his ratings. Bad move.

Why is everyone still missing the point! The government is already spending so much money on health care that, with a single payer system, the savings would practically pay for the program. A good single payer system would incorporate the dreadful Part D and Advantage programs and save the government (your tax dollars!) over $111 billion a year. That, in addition to the billions being spent for the uninsured.

Also, this reform would actually save medicare, which will be broke within 10 years (which is okay with Big Insurance and with people who just flat hate Obama). Also, presidents are supposed to be able to multi-task.

"No one is threatening to take away your insurance."
Oh thats where you're wrong. If Obamacare goes through, the government plans on getting rid of all other insurance. Now, if I were still able to get my own provate insurance, I wouldn't care about this, but the point is that the obamacare is not national insurance optional, but national nonoptional.

How can anyone be in favor of a plan in which there are no details? This is just another ploy for the government to seize more control. Ok, if you don't think that this is a power grab, explain how the government will be able to run this efficiently. How are the doctors going to handle the increased load? If you want socialized medicine which is what the government option is. Move to Canada or some other country. Plus you have to think why people come to America for health care. It is because we have the best health care system in the world. Ok, its got some flaws, but government control is only going to make it worse than it is.

2009-09-20 18:56:22 ET

Uh Dave,

The Constitution never mentions health care or health services of any kind. My advice to those waving the Constitution - try reading it for a change. Seriously.
I don't see why anyone would be against getting free medical care. Do you want to pay?
Sue - Some people are unable to work. Some people have lost their jobs. I guess if you lose your job no one should give you money or aid, because you don't deserve it. I'm just following your logic.

How can a society come to discover if it is living in a dark age?

Even to ask such a question gives creditability to the notion. Corruption is all around us.
Schiller (1864-1937), on the real side, grouped with worlds of a higher value and of a greater value. Before these times no man could question and disclose coercion at the highest levels of society. The dungeons and dragons of antiquity prevented such from being uttered.

Today the court is corrupt in every respect. The most fundamental law in The United States is that which requires the U.S. President to be born in the United States. The arrogance of the court in refusing to address the most fundamental of aspects regarding the nature of it’s very existence is the greatest of errors. They are failures in the highest regards of their sworn duties. They are the very worst of corruption.

The court members are guided by Swedenborg, and in the time frame of 1745-1748, he studied the secretes, and wrote about his trips that took him to traverse distant planets, and to the moon, and lastly to heaven itself. Now President Kennedy took us to the moon and we found none of Swedenborg’s little people with loud voices, and we forsake coercion. The court parades in long robes, entrenched in antiquity, the worst of disgusting.

The Christian era begins with Zacharias asking all not to pay their tax to Herod. Now this is not the Pope’s history, and we were told in Sunday school, that Joseph was traveling with a pregnant girl almost fifteen years old, to pay his taxes! Truth is that Joseph was a wealthy merchant from Bethlehem, with grown sons, and he had prepared a place for the virgin once they were married. (It is a long and complicated story) See AMAZON : An Analog from Adam to Nero.

We worker-bees have tax monies taken from our pay check each pay day…..Send the crooks (and Herod) as little as possible, and put in savings, monies, that you will need come April 15------------and have you ever heard of an extension? All the wealthy apply for an extension so that they may delay paying even longer.

I am a health insurance agent and have thought long and hard about this subject.

There is no perfect answer. Every solution I have thought of has its flaws.
But something needs to be done. The current system is bad social policy.

The US constitution allows the Federal government to regulate interstate commerce, so health insurance is a Federal issue. The constitution also prevents the states from interfering with interstate commerce, but that is exactly what we have right now. State regulation adds an extra cost to insurance companies and provides little consumer protection because of the pre-existing medical condition loop-hole.

If I were President I would explain to the people that we need some type of national health care umbrella because it takes a healthy nation to fight a war.

This was the argument that was used by Eisenhower to build the interstate highway system. In the 1930's an interstate highway system was shot down as being socialistic. Today nobody would argue that it was a bad idea.

I'm little shocked at the results of this poll but I guess that is why we are headed the way we are. Let me say it as articulately as I can - Obama care sucks.

2009-09-21 02:32:50 ET

I live in south Louisiana and was more than lucky to have only gotten a nasty sideswipe by Hurricane Katrina four years ago. However, I live plenty close enough to have seen FEMA in action and frankly if that's how the government runs things - and it is - we're screwed if the government takes over health care.

Let me ask you something ... what does the government to efficiently or better than the private sector? I can think of only one thing - we have a very nice national parks system. That's it.

Think hard, folks... government health care is bad for everyone. Tort reform and insurance reform at the key but the Dems are opposed as neither leads to government control and that's what they really want.

Hi everyone!! I live in the UK under the national health care system for over 30 years now but I grew up in Florida and my mother worked in a doctor's clinic so I do feel a little bit conversed in both methods. The national system here in Britain is fab and is always being brought up to date with new procedures and health care because it is for everyone and everyone pays for it thru very reasonable taxes. It is a big issue when it comes to reelections....ANY AND EVERY govt has to do its very best here by it otherwise they do not get the votes!! The people are on a win -win situation here and if things go wrong it hits the headlines quick!! The buck stops back with the govt and they know it and so do the people too and we care deeply about our health care here!! There is always room for improvements in any system. But when my dad come over to visit from the US his health care is free but when I have to go over in Fla I pay a fortune in costs for the most basic care which here in Britain costs very little in comparison. The stupid high costs your drugs and insurance and doctor's fees and hospital fees are seen to be just crazy for what we pay over here for the same thing. We have private care over here if it is wanted and also other insurance care if you want it too but why have these when our standard of care is high over here. The initial cost of setting this all up would be big to start off with in the USA but the amount of money saved in the long term would eventually pay for itself. After that you vote for the party that delivers the goods on health care in the elections as we do here....things get done and improvements are made and everyone is reasonably happy. We still have our specialists in all fields and the after care is there in place too but without the costs that line the pockets of the drug companies and the insurance companies. They lobby hard and pay alot of money to lobby hard because of their profit margins at your personal health's expense!! So at least go on line and learn first hand about the national health care systems here in the UK and also in France (whom it is often said to have a better one than ours even but they pay slightly more in their taxes for it). Become more informed over the real issues involved and don't just dismiss it all out of hand. These other systems do work and very effeciently and have good returns on health care as well as your wallet!! It is a very good sysem ad I have great faith in it and have had to use it many times as have my family and friends and as a nation we love it!! It belongs to us as a nation and we as a nation take care of it for everyones sake as well as our own. What more can I say ........IT WORKS AND IT WORKS WELL!!! so please.....Go and do your home work first and at least keep an open mind. There are other ways to get the same results that are better and more to the point fair Wouldn't it be wonderful to be able to travel anywhere on this planet home of ours and be able to recieve the same level of health care for every individual to a high standard and have it already paid for through a reasonalbe tax payment!!! Oh what a wonderful world this would be and the amount of work achieved from it for the betterment of all man kind would also be phenominal too. We have alot of evolving to do yet, methinks!! ;-)

Trish: I as well lived in Europe, France being one place. My wife got sick and used their health care. It was great. Most Americans do not know the half of it as they usually tell me to move back to Europe. Health care in this country won't work. It is a less civilized country, more of a war monger mentality. Most of worried how it affects their pocket book rather than how it makes their neighbor healthier. It's a me first society geared toward greed. England realized after WWII that people were more important than profits. The loss of life there opened their eyes. Heck, 911 didn't change much here except the addition of metal detectors in public places.
