Feminism is women being what you want to be without reference to gender...We should not even feel the need to compete with men, as competion is born out of lack of self confidence.
Feminism as I see it is the destruction of the idea that there is a difference between the genders . The way the question is phrased assumes that men are better than women
Feminism is a bunch of physically and behaviorally unattractive women running around hating men and making real women into something no sane man wants anything to do with out of fear that a shrill, feminist whack-job lurks deep within her. Feminists don't advance the cause of women; they simply impede it by being unreasonable, affirmative action loving haters of equity and anything that forces them to compete on a level playing field. They should all be wrapped in burkhas and sent to serve the Taliban on their knees so real women can have a chance to become the respected co-equals with men that real men want in their lives. Feminists are dinosaurs. Cast them out and bolt the doors.
I believe it is a woman being just what she wants to be and not conforming to what she believes society wants her to be. If a woman wants to love pink and be all girlie, she need be no less a feminist than a woman who wants to smash through the corporate glass ceiling or who wishes to denounce cosmetics and only be appreciated for her brain - As long as that woman is happy in her own skin and being true to herself. If it becomes a battle of the sexes, then we are talking about hate, anger, resentment.... something else entirely... giving strong women bad press. It takes men and women to make the world go round. Why should either sex be arrogant enough to think they are better than the other?
Feminism is an incredibly wide range of things. There is the facet of a woman being a man's equal, but there are also ones of equal rights, the right for a woman to express herself as she wishes, the right for a woman to live a life that is without discrimination against her femaleness and follows a path that she chooses. In literary criticism especially others focus on abolishing stereotypes of women; the basics being that a passive woman is good, and an active one is evil. It's not just about 'women are better than men' or some such. I think it's incredibly sad that it's looked down upon today, even by other women.
