You have to be kidding! I have lived here over 20 years and this school district seems to always need more, more and more money. With stimulus money how much more can they need?
I would like everyone to vote NO on the CCUSD's override because this has to stop somewhere.

As a parent and voter in the CCUSD district, I have carefully researched and spoken with a variety of sources regarding the override. I do not understand where the Sonoran News gets their information. Comments like "have you heard of any offer by administration to take salary cuts?" are misleading when the facts are the district has laid off administrative positions this year AND taken furlough days for those still on staff to bring down current costs and help salvage the classroom. Implications that the district is breaking elections law and the only one siding with the district is their own attorney is also not true...at least three different attorneys have provided their professional opinion and supported the legality of the current fact sheet on the district website.

Furthermore, to call active parents, grandparents and community members that are willing to donate their time and energy to get the real story out there "community activists" (see Mr. Sorchych's editorial) as if that is an insult is amazing to me. We do live in the United States of America and this level of passion and committment should be commended. Please exercise your due diligence as a community member and voter and make sure you are researching the whole story...not just what the local paper wants to represent as true. Most important, cast your ballot as every voice counts.

Hats off to R.D. Beechcroft in his Sonoran News September 23 letter to editor:

"Well, let’s look at CCUSD’s past accomplishments in this area, following the narrow passage of the first K-3 override in 2005-2006. Since then, CCUSD has received about $5 million from the district taxpayer, another $4 million from the state for all-day kindergarten and nearly $2 million from the state in miscellaneous “k-weight” (K-3) funds. This adds up to about $10-11 million from all sources.

A recent Sonoran News Guest Editorial commented on the K-3 money spent since 2005-6, “What is the district taxpayers’ return on investment? They have experienced very minor differences in Terra Nova test scores in the early grades, minimal use of new elementary teachers to supplement the then existing K-3 staff, little differences in class sizes and very minor spending for K-3 instructional materials.” After this four year record in spending $10-11 million for K-3 activities, what assurance can CCUSD administrators, and the governing board, give to the voters that they will not get “more of the same” with any future K-3 override?"

Enough of double dipping! CCUSD will receive full K-3 funding in 2009-10 and partial K-3 funding in the following two years (2010-11, 2011-12) from the district taxpayers.

Vote NO on CCUSD's K-3 renewal in November!

VOTE NO ON CCUSD K-3 OVERRIDE.

I have lived in this area for 10 years and have never witnessed a school system with such an unquenchable thirst for more money than CCUSD. I have watched their administrative staff grow at a phenomenal pace, while the teachers and the classrooms lack proper funding. I have witnessed abuse of their funds, illegal activities in an effort to get bonds passed and Taj Majahl school buildings built that we don't need, meanwhile turning down state funding.
I have also witnessed a corrupt bunch that choose to hide behind the innocence of the children, in an effort to extort funds from the taxpayers.

This issue is not about the children. It's about incompetent, unaccountable builders of bureaucracy, that choose to continue spending just like the federal government, only on a smaller scale. It's time we take our country back, starting with our local schools.

Does anyone ever give any attention to the elderly generation that are living on fixed incomes and are taxed out of their homes. Compassion goes far beyond just our children in society. There are many families today that are struggling financially and making sacrifices. It is not right to request tax increases that are not legitimate anytime, but especially during times like this in America. We all must make sacrifices and that includes school systems and various other government branches. Enough is enough !
VOTE NO on CCSUD's attempt to extort more unnecessary funds from homeowners.

The district is also receiving over $1 million in stimulus funds. It's getting money from the state for all-day K, Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed all cuts to education, our property taxes are way up because the equalization moratorium is over and the district still has 2.5 years left on the current override. How much more money does the district want?

It is so important the we come together as a community and vote YES for this override. Our schools are all A+ excelling schools with hard working teachers and students. However we are grossly underfunded, so every override is crucial. If you don't have kids in the school system please vote yes not only for your community but also for your home values.

I have volunteered at one of the district elementary schools for the last 3 years since my grand daughter entered kindergarten. I enjoy seeing the light bulb going off as children are learning new things. They are so proud of what they can accomplish. I love helping new readers and spellers. Since I began devoting hours of time as a volunteer these last three years I have seen first hand the frugalness of schools and the creative ways they can stretch a dollar.
Under unbelievable budget rules they plod on with undying spirits and devotion to the students learning. The most recent budget crisis has devestated all school districts in Arizona, now in 50th place in supporting schools! The upcoming overide election is continuation of a funding approved in prior years. It does not raise taxes!! It only continues a tax used exclusively for K-3 to hire enough teachers to keep classes small and give children a best start in the basics of education. The rules of school funding and its usage are very complicated. Even though you may feel the district has money sitting around, it can't be used to fill this purpose if the overide does not pass. We all know that laws don't always fit with reality!!

Hence it is critical that I ask you to support the passage of the overide in November. When schools do well they enhance the property values in their area. You can take pride in being a part of that process by passing the K-3 overide in November. Thank you for reading my thoughts.

Overrides are how schools in AZ do business. The Legislature says we will fund X amount for education. Then local communities can say, "You know what, we want to spend more where our children's education is concerned." That is what the override is all about. A group is asking the question: Can maintain the K-3 money that was voted on before. Can we spend additional funds over what the state has given us on our children's education. Do we, as a community, want aides in the classrooms or smaller teacher/student ratios, more supplies or books or whatever? Are we, as a community, willing to foot the bill for that. Do we see an investment in better schools as an investment in our own community?"

This is how all Arizona school districts get additional funding....through the override process. It does not go to salaries of administrators; it is not lost in the District Office...It does go to provide the support needed strictly in the Kindergarden through 3rd grade classrooms...That is what this override is asking....Are you willing to invest in our community's children and their K-3 classrooms. With the Legislature taking huge cuts out of education (causing massive cuts in teachers, more student in a classroom, reduction in programs, etc. I believe it is our community's duty to stand up for the type of education we want for our children and grandchildren. Do we want less than what we had as children?

When I look back and see how far we have come from the small rural school to the major district that we are becoming, how our test scores continue to remain at the top of the state's list, how people are drawn to our school district because of those test scores and the quality of life we have and how that in turn secures our property values, etc. , I stand firmly on the side of better education for our kids.

Where do you stand? If you are undecided, go to board meeting, visit the schools, take the time to become informed. Don't rely on misinformation to form your opinions. Get busy and get involved! G. K. Chesterson once said that "education is simply the soul of a society as it passes from one generation to another. What kind of soul are you willing to pass on to the next generation?
