I must be missing something. As I see it the more miles you drive, the more gas you use and therefore the more tax you pay even when charged by the gallon.

I don't think that taxing people by the mile is right way to go, this would penalize all the people who just bought high mpg hybrid cars. Or for that purpose those of us that ride motorcycles. Not to mention, you want to put a satelite tracking chip on our vehicles. What's next a chip on our body to charge us for air ? My girlfriend has several medical problems as I do and that would add an extra burden on anyone with alot of medical issues . That's being punished because you're ill . Come on guy's give us a break !!!!!!!!!!

This tax can actually be viewed two distinctly different way based on what kind of vehicle you drive and how much the tax may be to law makers if they decide to go for the miles driven tax. Lets say the tax is a half cent per mile driven that is equal to 50 cents per one hundred miles. Now if you car gets 15 mpg then you are already burning 6.7 gallons per one hundred miles driven and according to the news report you are paying 8 cents per gallon that would mean you are paying 54 cents per one hundred miles. In this case you are saving money with the new tax assuming you drive a vehicle that gets 15 mpg or less. If you driving a car that gets better gas mileage then you would be paying more money for gas then you would normally. If slightly defeats the purpose of having a fuel efficient vehicle. I personally get 44 mpg and drive 450 miles a week so I oppose this proposed revision. Keep in mind it really depends on how much they charge per mile. I used half cent for an example. Hope this helps everybody understand it better.

This is just another way for politicians to skirt their Primary responsibility of Managing the reasonable resources provided to sustian the community.
They are trying to be like service providers that use every excuse to divide things up and charge individually for each little piece of the service Like Cable or Cell Phone contracts.
I Say No to this penalty for Citizens trying to conserve energy responsibly.
If the Tax Base is decreased, then Politicians should be Layed-Off. That's what happens to everyone else.
Doing More with Less only works if Everyone cuts back.

The State and politicians should do what the rest of us have to do when times are tough. Tighten your belt. Reduce your spending. Use the same policy that the IRS uses in determining if an expense is deductible,"is it ordinary and is it necessary". Use this policy to stay within your budget. I've heard a lot of dumb ideas but this is about the dumbest.

There are several things that are not being considered here.......
1. What is the cost of the infrastructure to implement this program?
2. Who pays for establishing that infrastructure?
3. What are the ongoing costs to monitor this program? e.g. collecting data, mailing tax notices, ensuring compliance, etc, etc.
4. Who pays for the monitoring costs?
5. Will the miles driven while traveling out of state (and using other states gas) be subtracted from the total miles driven in a FL vehicle? If so, how will that be handled? If not, it means another ripoff for FL drivers.
5. What provisions will be made to fairly and equally tax the tourists from other states who travel here and use FL gasoline?
6. What safeguards will be implemented to insure that residents on the FL border will not cross over to adjoining states (where no pump monitors are) to buy gas and avoid the mileage monitors on FL gas pumps?
I believe that the Transportation Department, and the "Floridians for Better Transportation" would serve the people of FL better by bringing back a mandatory annual state vehicle inspection law (this time without the corruption) to ensure that the vehicles on our roads our safe to drive. Also, during that inspection, a check could be made for valid license, registration and insurance requirements. That's an area that is sorely lacking in this state.

The bottom line is this............If you (meaning the state of FL) want some more of our money, start by thinking about how you'll spend it for OUR benefit. Short of that, all the state will wind up will is a lot of taser zapped mileage monitors.
