In Kentucky, the results of the 2008 Democratic Primary were 70-30 in favor of Clinton. The general election was roughly 60-40 for McCain. The state is generally 70-30 registered Democrat. Most of the 30% Republican equate conservativism with measuring your corn meal at the end of the month to avoid starving. They are mostly political idiots. Those who aren't are wearing blinders or locked into power, ego, and greed. Along with W.Va., it was the worst primary defeat for Obama. MSNBC caught on to this lopsided number immediately, blaming the differential on Obama's Muslim name. I sent Tucker Carlson an email on the subject. The issue was not religion. It was race, and now all of the racists across the country are coming out of the woodwork. I live in the same South as Jimmy Carter. I served as the State Coordinator for Nader's Raiders ballot initiative for a short while, deciding that Louisville and Lexington were the only areas necessary to get Ralph on the ballot. The most common comment that I heard was simple. "I don't care if Obama's middle name is Jesus Christ. I ain't a votin' for no damn #^%%er! He may win, but he ain't my President. Even if Hillary is a woman, Obama is the wrong damn color." Racism is rampant in the South, and particularly among many white people everywhere, Kentuckian or not. It is just not PC to discuss. Apparently, some rednecks haven't gotten past the "revenuers" yet, in light of the story surrounding the murdered census worker in Clay County. Hatred is a choice, not a capitalistic right! There are many of us who do not share their views, but we are often privy to inside info. A sad, sad commentary, to say the least.

Although we can not answer for everyone, I can attest to myself, my best friend is “Hispanic”, never asked if he was illegal and don’t really care either. I attend a “Multi-Racial” Baptist church, I’m married to a Filipino of 5 years and my oldest of three Filipino sons is GAY.

So don’t even go there, I personally would not care if our President or anyone was GREEN and came from the planet mars, if we disagree then it’s on ideology, character or his or her content. And that is what FREEDOM is about, you have the right to your opinion even if it differs from our president, and let no man tell you different.

My parents came here in the 40’s from Europe as immigrants, we did not own slaves, our fathers did not own slaves and if we had been around during those times, we would have been apposed to it. Plain and simple, so do not use RACE as a reason for your difference of opinion, it’s just not a factor.

    Best regards,

The answer to the question was 'many', though, not implying the whole of the population of the U.S., which obviously helped Mr. Obama get elected, but, rather referring to most of the promoters, if not the organizers, of these anti-Obama rallies. No one can denied that race, at times, is an issue for some in our society, and, though it is a small percentage of the population, it is large enough to create division and animosity among the people. Those who use this tactics to devide and win, in the long run, will lose more than they gain.

    more from the smart people.....
    -----------------------
Dean Baker, Co-director, Center for Economic and Policy Research:
It's hard to believe that anyone would be questioning if President Obama is an American if he was white.

    ------------------------------------------
Dear sir, if he was white, his mother would not have been involved with a man from Africa, so the birthers would have no reason to question him.

Did you think before you sent that reply?

  • Robin - 15 years ago

per the page where the Smart People are allowed to post....
    _---------------------------------

    Malika Saada Saar

The posters and statements at last week’s demonstration that depicted President Obama as a voodoo witch doctor, or the “lyin African in the White House”, or in the words of the tea bag party leader himself, “Obama is an Indonesian Muslim turned welfare thug,” wreak of ugly racialized imagery.
    ----------------------------

She has no idea. She should actually look at the thousanda and thousands of signs pictured everywhere on the internet, and then make an informed decision. Maybe she doesn't realize that people besides MSNBC or HUFFPO or KOS have pictures of the protests.....

  • RACE CHARGE WILL UNDERMINE OBAMA ! - 15 years ago

THIS RACE CHARGE WILL HURT OBAMA --- WE ELECTED HIM THINKING HE WOULD HELP PUT 'RACE' BEHIND US ---- HE HAS DONE LITTLE IN THAT REGARD ... THIS CAN ONLY FURTHER DIVIDE US.

  • Robin - 15 years ago

They should have made the second choice more like , Only for a few. Not include the yes in the answer. Playing around with your questions is not fair polling.

Having said that, I know that there are racists Americans. Anybody with a brain can see that. However, they are a very small percent of the population. Also, they are white, black, hispanic, asian... whatever you check off on all those forms we fill out in our everyday lives.

Race is all around us, but most of us do not consider a person's race as we assess their character.

Before you continue with the name calling of those people who attended the rally on 9/12 (no matter if it is 70k or 2 mil.. sheesh who cares), why not look around the internet and follow the links to the pictures from the attendees out there. They are everywhere. When you see those pics, read the signs. There were so many different messages that these people wanted heard by their elected officials. Instead, they are called insignificant and must be racist.

Because after all, the Democrats were so immenseley respectable to President Bush for the last 8 years. And before that, there was the continuous criticism of President Clinton.

    Were their critiques racist? NO

Stop hiding behind the race card. It has lost it's significance to the American public, because a ridiculous number of people throw it down when it is concerning a black American. Lies, and they know it. It is a tactic to shut your opponent up. Knock him/her back on their heels and make them hesitate to voice their opinion.

Well guess what, they have finally decided that you can call them what you will. They do not care what you say as nobody really believes it is about race. If some do, then they need to think a little harder sometimes and get the facts before passing judgement.

I'm soooo sick of "racist!" being the response in which anyone disagrees with Obama. I'm don't agree with 95% of what his administration is doing. That's all there is to it.

The word "racist" has lost all meaning. Our grandparents may have truly had some racism in their blood because they DID grow up in that kind of world. Over time, we have begun to move past that. Is there still some racism? Yes! Of course there is - why does it mean that a disagreement with Obama has to be that?

Here we are decades after the civil rights movement was passed and we are going backwards because of the constant reminder from the liberals that we are all indeed racist. JUST STOP IT ALREADY!

Chuck, who's really drinking the Koolaid? The official count from the local government (fire and police) place the protest numbers at roughly 70,000. Just because you want it to be 500,0000 to 1,000,000 does not make it so.

  • Say What - 15 years ago

Jeff Smith, do you realize that blacks have voted 100% for the white presidential candidate for all of the years they've been able to vote before Obama?

  • CallMeIshmael - 15 years ago

What's all this talk about racism? Obama doesn't have a race. Why is nothing known about his life? Why no school records, no teachers, no childhood chums, etc.? Why no passport records? Why do you think he won't release his birth certificate? Because he doesn't have one! He was never born, that's why! Obama isn't human, he's a cyborg sent back in time by SkyWatch to kill Sarah Palin. He can sound like anyone (or anything) he wants so he's able to be all things to all people. He's actually made of liquid metal so he can assume any shape he wants. We need to throw him back into the melting pot. It's the only way to be safe from him.

  • Jeff Smith - 15 years ago

DO YOU GUY REALIZE THAT 46 PERCENT OF ALL WHITE AMERICAN VOTERS VOTED FOR OBAMA, LESS THAT 2% OF BLACK VOTERS VOTED FOR MC CAIN...

    WHO ARE THE RACISTS ??

  • Chuck - 15 years ago

    Hi Sextus,

Only 70,000 at the 9/12 protests? Surely you jest or you have kool aid all down the front of your shirt.

Somewhere between 500K and 1 Million.

  • Sextus - 15 years ago

I feel like the question needs to be more nuanced than this. I picked yes for a few because the actual number of people who are strongly against Obama is a very small part of the population. There were only 70 thousand people at the 9/12 march, and I think its reasonable, given the 2008 voting and current polling, to set it at about %20 of the population nationwide. This is just the people who really don't like Obama personally and are strongly against his politics. There are clearly many more who are concerned with his policies but don't dislike him personally.

If the question was how many of that %20 who don't like him personally, I would be willing to bet that there is a disperportionately large amount of that group who have issues wish his race.

So nationally, not that many, but within the fringe subgroup, more than a few.

  • katdancer - 15 years ago

I wonder how many of the folks who voted "yes, for many" also believe that the Bush Administration had advance knowledge of 9/11. I'll bet a bunch.
