You need to change your poll because race plays a role in EVERY politican - white, black, red, yellow, pink and green. People don't like President Obama because he is black and people didn't like President Bush because he is white.

The race card doesn't belong on this subject. A lot of us, white, black and "other" don't like Obama's policies. Carter is senile.

Every time someone criticizes Obama, the Democrats play the Race Card. He is not black, he is bi-racial and he has LOUSY ideas. Had it not been for ACORN he woudl not be in the White House.

I for one am sick of "the race card".It is funny how it is used any time someone dissagrees with any black folks but not used whe someone dissagrees with white folks.People should stick to the issues of the debate,Jimmy Carter was out of line with that type of comment.I expect better than that from a former president.

Carter is senile and full of crap, just like obamanation's policies and ideas. Capatalism is being killed and we are turing into a socialist society, whether we like it or not. The media is the biggest player of the race card as they know it sells and gets attention, pure crap, that's why the media is not trusted and seen as in the left's pocket.

While there are some who do not like President Obama because of his race, I do not feel it's the over riding factor. Many have ligitamate complaints regarding the direction of this administration. Others wear the party jersey so close until it really doesn't matter what the other party does they are going to be against it. polarization seems to be the wave of the future.

2009-09-16 10:27:49 ET

Who among us wants to be perceived as a racist? None of us. Playing the race card some will stop some critics from voicing their opinion. It is the company he keeps and the words Obama uses, the bail out money, on and on, that keep the critics talking. Not because he is a black man and most critic's are very straight forward in defining what they do and do not like. I will give you there are racist's in the world. But when you look at the amount of Bush hater's still vocal, you have to agree, it is politics, not race.

It is not racism as it is the race toward socialism. President Carter, undoubtedly the worst president in history cannot be taken seriously. This single term peanut farmer who gave Iran to the Islamic extremists and destroyed our intelligence gathering capabilities is now considered an elder statesman. What a joke!

PS I like to consider myself a equal opportunity hater, I hate everyone that is not simply an American!!!

Anyone want to take a guess who split us all apart from just being Americans, using cute little special names for different races of people?

I believe that the main reason the Democrat hierarchy promoted Obama was because he was black. They knew that they could then label anyone who opposed Obama and their liberal agenda as racist and that the media would willingly trumpet that charge.
Its more difficult to defend and debate their policies than it is to use the race card.

This is not a race issue, it's what the man has done Here's a few things that scare me:

HB1388 passed August 27, 2009 at 5:06pm in Legislation and Bills in Congress

You just spent $20,000,000 to move members/supporters of Hamas, a
terrorist organization, to the United States ; housing, food, the whole
enchilada.

HB 1388 PASSED

Whether you are an Obama fan, or not, EVERYONE IN THE U. S. needs to
know....

Something happened.... H.R. 1388 was passed, behind our backs. You may
want to read about it.. It wasn't mentioned on the news... just went by
on the ticker tape at the bottom of the CNN screen.

By executive order, President Barack Obama has ordered the expenditure of
$20.3 million in "migration assistance" to the Palestinian refugees and
"conflict victims" in Gaza .

The "presidential determination", which allows hundreds of thousands of
Palestinians with ties to Hamas to resettle in the United States, was
signed and appears in the Federal Register.

Few on Capitol Hill, or in the media, took note that the order provides a
free ticket replete with housing and food allowances to individuals who
have displayed their overwhelming support to the Islamic Resistance
Movement (Hamas) in the parliamentary election of January 2006.

Let's review....itemized list of some of Barack Obama's most recent
actions since his inauguration:

His first call to any head of state, as president, was to Mahmoud Abbas,
leader of Fatah party in the Palestinian territory.

His first one-on-one television interview with any news organization was
with Al Arabia television.

His first executive order was to fund/facilitate abortion(s) not just
here within the U. S. , but within the world, using U. S. tax payer
funds.

He ordered Guantanamo Bay closed and all military trials of detainees
halted.

He ordered overseas CIA interrogation centers closed.

He withdrew all charges against the masterminds behind the USS Cole and
the "terror attack" on 9/11.

Now we learn that he is allowing hundreds of thousands of Palestinian
refuges to move to, and live in, the US at American taxpayer expense.

These important, and insightful, issues are being "lost" in the blinding
bail-outs and "stimulation" packages.

These make you wonder This is not a race issue, its one of what is happening to this country

Let's face it, racism is a fact of life. Whether you want to admit it or not everybody is a racist. You may not want to be called a racist but you know you are and it doesn't matter what race you belong to. If you are black chances are that you harbor feelings about whites or orientals that have nothing to do about the person but only because they are not like you. The same goes for everyone else. If you say you are not a racist regardless of of your skin color or ethnicity you are lying.

Benjamin Franklin said it best, "Birds of a feather flock together". That is a fact of human nature and is unchangeable. You see it every day in every situation but you do not want to acknowledge it. The sooner we understand and accept that the sooner we will be more acceptable of other races and ethnic backgrounds. Trying to force people together that don't want to be together only causes more animosity, fear and distrust.

While it is true that some people don't agree with President Obama because of different thinking, some of the antics are purely due to racism. If people think that racism is dead and doesn't play a major role in some of these outbursts, they have on blinders. Racism is alive and well especially in the southern states; however, in this case, it may be masked by "having a difference of opinion".

You can always count on Democrats to inject race into an issue when they want to take the focus off of the details of the policy...rather than give any credence to Mr. Carter's remark, I would rather focus on the questions that are not being asked here....Is this President voilating his oath of office to defend the Constitution by advocating the takeover of one sixth of the US economy by the federal government...has this President violated his oath of office to defend the Constitution by taking over General Motors...has this President violated his oath of office by funneling hundreds of billions of dollars to every Democratic cause including the funding of ACORN...what does it say about the true state of the United States government when a majority of 500 people in Washington can vote apparently to take anything from anybody they wish and give those resources to any cause they wish. These are the critical issues we should be discussing.....not the ravings of a disgraced and bitter and inconsequential Georgia peanut farmer.

Jimmy Carter was and apparently, ever shall be the biggest moron to hold the office of president. Most of the people protesting this president's policies, philosophies and ideology would support Alan Keyes in a heartbeat. It has nothing to do with race, and you in WBT know that.

Martin Luther King's dream will not be realized as long as we look at everything through the prism of race. Look at the issues....
Government owning the auto industry, banking industry, housing and if the democrats have their way, the healthcare industry is not what America is about.

Lose the hyphenated nationalities, lose the victim status, lose white guilt and most importantly, pray to the Lord God and this country can be healed. But those who profit and benefit from victimhood must be ready to move on.

Unfortunately, former President Carter has once again demonstrated just how out of touch he is with the American public. Regardless of race, Presidential policies will be juged on their merit, good or bad. President Bush was admonished not for being a white president, but for bad policies. The same is now true for President Obama. His detractors are pointing to bad policy or program decisions, not his race. The Democrats who continue to play the race card need to understand they are detracting from their President by saying his decisions are not worty to stand on their own and be jugded.

Yes, racism is alive in the U.S. it always will be. Every time one punk shoots someone his family is first to say, "Oh he is a good boy". The media is first to play the race card. Obama's miserable performance has not manifested an appropriate universal rebuke because of his race. Bob,

You are simply, simple. Barack was elected by America primarily because we were all sick of Bush. Conservatives were sick of him for pandering to you guys on the left, instead of simply honoring his oath and defending the constitution. By the way, we liked McCain even less...so Barack won a majority of votes without anyone knowing what his policies would be. His entire campaign was platitudes, smoke and mirrors. The media was crucial to his succeeding in passing that off as wisdom and maturity.

Elections are almost always, either a vote for the lesser of two evils, or a vote for change...I think you know what happened in this case.

Even though this poll is geared towards people that often listen to WBT as Sambone stated; however, I am very surprised and energized to know that people who listen to some of the things that are being stated on your station are aware that racism is especially on some of your broadcasts. It is not blatantly stated but it is masked as a "difference of opinion". When has Rush Limbaugh asked to see any other president's birth certificate or wished that any other Democratic president failed. Of course when he's called out, then he changed it to he said that he hopes his policies fall which like I said, racism is often masked by having a difference of opinion. Why is it that people have to first see President Obama's Back to school address to the kids before showing it in the schools (and don't say it didn't happen because it did happen in York, SC) or the mass phone calls from the Rock Hill School District that informed parents to send a note if they did not want their kids to listen to his speech. This is purely ludicrous and racist (but expected in SC). I cannot remember it being a choice (when I was in school) if I wanted to listen to a President's address.

As a fellow evangelical Christian, I am continually disappointed by Jimmy Carter's views, positions & statements. Where is the evidence of racism from the those who passionately disagreem w/ Pres. Race does play out in the criticism. The fact that folks in a Baptist Church in California are praying for his death; the birth certificate issue (don't think Hilliary Clinton would not have uncovered that. Give me a break); not debating facts on health care and referring to him as "Hitler, a socialist, communist (remember MLK?); "take our country back" Have your forgotten we had an election and the winners are taking back the country?
Let's face it, black and white, we have racist tendencies. What about the clown faces displayed at the get togethers? Wilson fought removing the Confederate flat from the state house in South Carolina. It was put there in 1961 after integration became a hot issue.
Race is the issue. There are debatable issues in the health care plan but no one focuses on it.

It was mentioned earlier that the mainstream media was derelict in its duty of revealing the real Barack Obama and that they were failing to report on stories that don't fit the agenda...

This quote from Charles Gibson on the ACORN story, a group that is under investigation inf 14 out of 57 states (don't want to be called a racist for correcting our dear leader), a group that has received 53 million taxpayer dollars and is about to get billions more in taxpayer money...should illustrate that you are not getting the full story.

"I don't even know about it," Gibson said, laughing. "So you've got me at a loss. ... But my goodness, if it's got everything, including sleaziness in it, we should talk about it in the morning."

When one of the radio show's hosts described it as a "huge issue," Gibson said ABC had "done some stories about ACORN before, but this one I don't know about."

SO, this man is calling such a story tabloid journalism?????

If you watch him for your news, you are going to remain ill-informed.

Consider the source... Jimmy Carter is an idiot. This is about the most ludicrous babble I have heard... all of this racist talk if you disagree with Obama. If you were black and disagreed with Bush then you were racist also by this logic. I disagreed with Bush on a lot of his policies and I disagree with Obama on most of his policies, so I guess I can't win... I must hate everyone.

I think what no one has brought up n the last six months is the fact that Pesident Obama is probably not a bad man. I have felt from the beginning that he is indeed a puppet. That's right, a puppet. Do I think that all of these ideas come frm his careful insight and feelings for the US? NO. He s being driven by soeone or something in the background to achieve a goal in some groups agenda. Anyne ever see "The Manchurian Candidate"?

The people who think others don't like Obama because he's black are racists themselves. I considered voting for Obama, but after listening to his campaign speeches, I decided he was just full of socialist rhetoric. He's still making campaign speeches full of nice-sounding, empty promises while the political machine behind the puppet pushes the prosperous America we know over the cliff. This man's legacy is going to be the destruction of everything that has made our country great.

Good for President Obama that he stays above the fray on this. Watch our President's response to Joe Wilson's accusation – it's a great demonstration of man in command. To all of us outside of the right wing echo chamber, the racism of these so-called conservatives has been obvious for a long time. William F. Buckley, Jr. would have been horrified. White people, and especially white men, have ruled this country since it' founding, and it took the election of a black man to make whites realize they will soon become the minority in "their" country. Anytime people lose something of such emotional value, their response is denial and anger. The "I want my country back" screams demonstrate that these people don't realize that the country has moved on while they have stood still. When they realize they can't have it back, they respond with the types of outburst we hear all day long on talk radio, Faux News and now in Congress. Racism is like alcoholism: First you have to recognize that you have a problem. The discussion on this blog demonstrates that the majority of WBT listeners have yet to take the first step toward dealing with their issues.

I.M.Dem,
I was praying for Colin Powell to run as president on the republican side of the court. Why? because maybe that way the black voters would listen to policies and campaign platforms instead of just pulling the lever for a black man. I don't care what race the president is, I care what his ideas for me as a member of this nation are. Quite frankly I do not like his ideas, or the ideas of the democratically controlled congress. So I hate Nancy Pelosi and her ideas. I really dislike the corruption being demonstrated by Senator Baucus and his "gang of six". They are the ones that want fines for those who don't get health insurance. No one mentions that 1/4 of the campaign funding for the people in that room comes from.. INSURANCE COMPANIES. Get your head out of the sand and stand up for yourself. This nation is getting railroaded into a socialist style economy faster thank you can blink. Just remember, "A government that has the power to give you everything, has the power to take it all away."

If people continuously point out racism where it does not exist all your going to do is create it.

Senior. One of your fellow seniors, John McCain was not born in the United States. So, what do his fellow white Senators do? In 2008 (S. Res. 511) they declare that he is an American. Where was that same effort for Obama? See how our worlds are different? We have been living in your world for a long time and can see all the racism that fills it. Hopefully the diversity we see blooming everywhere will help all of us see the racism and allow us to eliminate it.

You are so blinded by your hatred of white people, BWL. It is you that is the racist. Does racism play any major role in criticizing President Obama today? No more than it did with Bill Clinton yesterday!

2009-09-16 15:38:52 ET

Every time something isn't going their way, minorities and those who support their issues cry racism. And we continue to fall all over ourselves trying to prove it isn't true. If they really wanted racism to die, they'd stop using it as a tool. We're willing to do anything to disprove we're racist, so it is too profitable to give up.

The discontent with Obama has nothing to do with his being black and everything to do with the fact that he is pink (a socialist) and is doing his best to turn the country in that direction.

Carter's statement lends credibility to this 'Hail Mary pass' of an arguement. NOT!! If I was once a flaming liberal and changed my mind when Obama came along I guess you might be able to suspect racism. I, however, was and still am a fiscal and social conservative and loathe the policies that Obama supports.

Why don't you ask the land-owning adults who voted for the very first time last year what made them finally get off their fat a**es and go to the polls? HMMM what could it have been?

Sambone,
I don't listen to Rush, I think he's a pompous windbag. However if he said that, I'll agree with him on at least that point. You can't continue to accuse people of being racists or bigots or liars without creating animosity towards the people pointing fingers. You want to solve the race problem quit bringing it up unless it's true. No one's burning crosses in yards here, they are disagreeing in a socialist agenda that the president and his cronies are pushing through the senate.
Go read the health care bill, if your're in the middle class you're SCREWED if you have to get your own insurance. Cheap insurance is between 8-9k a year for a family. You are now REQUIRED to purchase it or face large fines. If you're household income is above 77k you get no tax credit from the government for purchasing insurance.
Those plans tend to have deductible in excess of 10k. So now you decide to have a kid, or god forbid something happen, you just spend in the neigherborhood of 20k of your 77k (before taxes) on healthcare. So that leaves you with around 30k to pay your other bills that year (assuming around 30% in taxes). I don't like that at all.. does that make me racist?

Oh yes and the "Gang of Six" that created the plan, that Barak has said he has reservations about, are all white.

Senior, you missed my point. I did not say McCain was not an American, just that he was not born in the United States. My point was the preferential treatment afforded him by his fellow Senators. BillF
2009-09-16 18:11:56 ET

BWL: Do you really think that John McCain should not be allowed to be president because he was born on a US military Base while his father was serving???

Now, I'm not saying that John McCain should be president, however he was the lesser of 2 evils. And for those who want to complain; the problem of the McCain/Palin ticket was not Palin...it was clearly McCain that sunk that ship.

But, I don't think that race had anything to do with the fact that John McCain was deemed worthy to aspire to be the President of the United States. ANY person born of US citizens on a US military base, while 1 or both of the parents are serving the country should be allowed to attempt to be president. In my opinion the children of a military person would actually have more of a right than (did I use this right??) I do, and not less.

Can someone please explain to me, and I know it has been stated before, but why is it that if a white person voted for someone other than Obama they are racist, but if a black person voted for him they are not? I guess the same rules would apply: if I'm proud to be white then I'm racist, but if someone is proud to be black then it is ethnic pride, or being proud of ones heritage/ancestors. I just don't understand how the rules are so different.

The only reason people blame racism as the cause for opposition towards Obama, is because he is black. No one claimed racism when people were so blatantly disrespectful and against George Bush. I am tired of the special interest always pulling the discrimination card, can no one just take responsibility for their actions and not try and place the blame on racism. Its ridiculous and to me make those who scream racism more racist then any of us! I don’t like Obama because of his policies and his dishonesty. He is inconsistent and has done more damage in a few months being in office than any other president before him. Please all you who like to pull the race card GET OVER YOURSELVES! No one cares about your skin color...

I am not saying that at all, BillF. All I am saying is that he was not born in the United States. That is a fact. Also, Mitt Romney's father was born in Mexico, Bill Richardson's parents were both born outside the United States, James Buchanon's parents were born in Ireland.... My point, once again, is to raise the question why Obama was no given the same deferential treatment. Why did nobody ask McCain, Romney and Richardson for their birth certificates? Senior's explanation that Obama's dad was born in Kenya bears no relevance, since others with parents born outside the United States did not have their citizenship questioned. It is this type of discrimination we live with every day. Members of dominant groups have the luxury of obliviousness. Black are not that oblivious, since they are the victims.

Dan S

BWL,
Simple, his mother at the time of his birth was not old enough (14) to convey citizenship to Obama based on the law at that time. If he was born outside the US, he would not be a US citizen. There has been suggested documentation that he went to school in Indonesia/Polynesia as a citizen of those countries. Additionally he has spent TONS of money trying to prevent ANYONE from revealing if he even has a long form birth certificate on file in Hawaii. The same lawyers are preventing any of his college transcripts from being revealed. It casts a huge air of uncertainty about a man who is supposed to be the leader of the US.

For those of you that don't know, the long form birth certificate in Hawaii is only given to children born in the state> Obama has yet to release that document or allow the Hawaiian state government to even reveal if that document exists. The short form or certificate of life birth that he released is a document that a child was born to a resident of Hawaii whether they were in the country or not.

Now, enough about it, we will never find out one way or another if the crazy Birthers are right. I think at this point it would cause more harm than good anyway, the time to allow such checks and arguments are long since gone.

BTW if you feel like your the victim, please explain how? Do you speak English well? Do you pronounce your words correctly? Do you dress appropriately for the setting? Do you behave in a civilized and contained manner? Are you separating yourself from other people intentionally to promote your ethnic heritage? If you answered yes to any of these, congratulations your a redneck and they get picked on and looked down upon by everyone in the country, yet no one screams racism when a comedian makes a joke about them.

As my mother always said, build a bridge and get over it. There are scholarships, affirmative action, government required hiring quotas, and numerous other programs to help minorities get ahead. I would be TICKED if I was a minority. All those programs merely suggest that minorities need help to get ahead in life, where others can get there by merit and hard work. We all know that's not true.
Obama himself started in humble beginnings. Look where he is now. WHY? He worked his butt off. Hard work and motivation get you places, stepladders just give you a better view.

This is a poorly worded question. You ask, "Does racism play a role in Obama's critics." I answered no because for me it doesn't and I dare say for the large majority of those who oppose Obama it doesn't. However, from the way you phrased the question, in a literal fashion one would have to say yes. There are always going to be people who make race an issue. That racism is on both sides of the issue. There are those on the Progressive/Democrat side who deem any criticism of their statist agenda as racist because their head cheerleader the President is black. That is one reason they found him so attractive as a candidate. There are of course some white folks I'm sure who oppose him because of his race. They are idiots, enough said about that. Perhaps your question would have been better put if you had asked if racism was a primary factor in the opposition to the President

BWL
2009-09-16 21:09:58 ET

Dan, S., thanks for your long explanation, but all of your allegations have been proven wrong and discredited by the State of Hawaii. Furthermore, today a judge declared frivolous a lawsuit alleging that Obama is not a citizen. I quote from the decision: "(Rhodes) has presented no credible evidence and has made no reliable factual allegations to support her unsubstantiated, conclusory allegations and conjecture that President Obama is ineligible to serve as president of the United States. Instead, she uses her complaint as a platform for spouting political rhetoric, such as her claims that the president is 'an illegal usurper, an unlawful pretender, [and] an unqualified imposter." Now, I firmly believe that even if you had witnessed Obama's birth, you would still doubt it, but I wanted to put the facts out there for everyone else. However, and again, since you all are a bit slow today. My point is not about citizenship. My point is that Obama is being treated differently simply because he is black. No other candidate or president has had to prove his citizenship. How do you know Romney is not Mexican, or Richardson not Guatemalan, or McCain not Panamanian? Have you seen their birth certificates?

E Sims, sorry, after reading my answer, I am unsure I was clear. So, let me explain. I believe the two are independent. So, it is absolutely possible to disagree with Obama and not be a racists. It is also possible to agree with Obama and be a racists.

"Now, enough about it, we will never find out one way or another if the crazy Birthers are right. I think at this point it would cause more harm than good anyway, the time to allow such checks and arguments are long since gone."

I don't care, i feel we are past the stage were anything can or SHOULD be done about it. Or do I need to explain that in more detail?
