Do you feel America is safer today than it was on September 11, 2001?

Regardless of who's in office, if someone wants to attack America, they will if they are that determined. We are just as safe as we were before Sept 11th. The only difference is that Sept 11th has us looking out for potential attacks. NO PRESIDENT CAN SAVE YOU FROM AN ATTACK OR TRULY KEEP YOU SAFE, LET'S JUST HOPE THEY GET UP AND RALLY, INSTEAD OF SITTING ON THEIR ASS (BUSH).

As of Jan 2009 and more each coming day, no, I do not feel that our country is any safer. I believe we are headed backwards.

I was feeling positive until Obama took office.
In my opinion he is reversing much of what Bush had accomplished.
He will go down in history as the worse president in our history. The turn the other cheek mentally of the new progressives will end up killing many citizens.
I know this is a rant but I'm a typical American, self reliant and don't want the government controlling my life.

Yes of course we are safer now. Does this mean that something like this will never happen again? No, it will probably happen again because there is no way to fully protect ourselves against people whose own lifes don't matter to them. However, those who would plan such things can no longer operate with impunity. Their cell phones and emails are hopefully being monitored and we are in their backyards looking for them. This can't help but to disrupt their planning somewhat. However, make no mistake they are out there and will strike again if we ever let up.

The argument that we are not safer makes no sense. Have we been attacked again, at least on that scale? Isn't that a measure of success or do we just assume they had no intention of attacking us again. I think not. We are safer, but the difficult question is whether or not we are willing to do what it takes to maintain our safety, and to continue to go after those who would perpetrate such acts. As a former special forces operator and student of history it seems clear to me that we must be vigilant and not rest on our laurels. These people have to be routed out and either change their ways or be eliminated. There is little room for sympathy or anything resembling that. They are out there waiting for an opportunity. We also have to realize that no matter how much we do, at some point we will be attacked again because time is on their side. Being Americans we are historically impatient. This is already showing as we are tired of these wars in the mideast. They will wait until we let our guard down somewhere and it will happen again. I just hope we are ready to continue the fight.

I felt that after 9-11 that it is only a matter of time till the next shoe was to drop. For 7 1/2 yrs I felt we were at a status quo with the government being extra vigilent. However, since January of this yr. I have felt less safe since the administration treats 9-11 as past event. They choose to believe that by closing Gitmo, limiting interrigation techniques, and by concessions and apologies we can make our enemies love us. The enemies that have hated us in the past, hate us today, and will hate us tomorrow. Each generation of our enemy is raised in a climate of radical anti-US hatred. The struggle of blacks in this country to escape segregation and discrimination required not only legislation, it required that each generation teach the next generation, tolerance and understanding, not hatred and violence. In nature, a wolf cub and a fawn can be raised to live in harmony. It is the adult of each species that teaches it's young to be predator or prey. It is no different with humans. A child can be raised to hate someone different from himself or he can be raised to be tolerant and civil to someone different than himself. It is only when all of humanity focuses on all of the things we have in common, rather than the few things that set us apart, that we can truely to hope in harmony. If we unilaterally give and give and give, this will only be seen by our enemies as a sign of weakness. They will never love us for it.
