How should the 49ers handle the Michael Crabtree situation?

crabtree was drafted No.10. 9 football franchises did not draft him and the niners took him cause he was the best WR on the board. This crabtree thing is getting to be so dam stupid. With this economies the way it is, he should sign his contract and prove to the fans and the team what he is worth. I don't think his heart is in niners land. He wants to go and play for his hometown. He wants to be a cowboys. The niners should let him sit out the season and trade him to the cowboys for TE Jason Witten. If shaun hill can win without him then the heck with him. Niners should stay put on what they offer him. Do not sign crabtree cause he is just going to ruin the team. He does not want to play for niners. He would have sign his contract before preason games if his heart was with the niners. We now have another T.O in this league. Crabtree, you are a bunch of horse shit. I talked to a lot of niners fans and fans from other team and they all told me that your attitude is such and you need to freakin grow up. You just made me lost my respect for you. We do not need you here. We could do it without you. You are a stubborn jack ass crabass. Do not waste your energy and money to sign this freakin idiot. He will be a cancer on this football team. Go be a cowboy and go kiss Jerry Jones ass. He will give you $40 millions.

We hope the NFL puts the cap on all rookies pay. so he gets much less on his reentry new year.

  • Hisimon - 15 years ago

It would be nice if Deon Sanders was forced to answer the commish. about what teams want to offer 40 mil. to Crabtree, the niners could get some tampering pics from (a Dallas football team) Sanders should just shut his pie hole about anything in SF, he's a classless windbag that butchers the English language, it's easy to see he didn't attend many classes at FSU

  • Terry Kerrigan - 15 years ago

I agree with Jonh. He doesn't want to play in SF. His heart is not in SF but deep in the heart of Texis. Crab says he no want the hill. He say he no want the Candlestick. He say he no want the Sing.'s Gladiator school.

I've been a Niners fan since god knows when. At least since I can remember. It's been a long time since I've been this excited for the season. I'm not over optimistic...I think an 9-7 or 8-8 record and a good run at making the playoffs (cause of our week division) would be fantastic. It's not the Super Bowl but at least it would be progress. All that being said...I want to talk about CRABTREE. I think what he's doing is not as crazy or ignorant as everyone is saying. I think he is worth more than 10th pick money. Not 7th pick money but more than 10th. I think the Niners can make an exception for him and meet in the middle a bit. Something intensive based is not going to work for this guy. Not with the team we have now. If he wants 7 million more, just offer 2 mil more...I dunno. He is an exceptional athlete. He kinda fell in our laps. From what I hear there wasn't much negotiating. We offered a slotted deal and that was that? I could be wrong on that but that's what I gather. I don't think any of the other rookies in the first round took the first thing that was offered to them? I think the Niners and Crabtree have to meet in the middle someplace. No one had a problem with him in college. He has not said a peep during this whole time with bashing the Niners. I'm still excited about him possibly coming. He would be a great piece to the offense, especially for the future. Think 5 years from now with Crabtree, Morgan, Coffee, V. Davis, and possibly N.Davis at the helm? That's a great O we'll have. It's really too bad it's come to this. I'm just really trying to look at this objectively. All in all, I hope he signs tomorrow and maybe half way through the year he becomes what he was drafted to be...

I was very pleased when he fell to No. 10, but now I am pissed...let him sit...singletary wants a team of warriors (and I don't men GS Warriors -StackJack) and this gut aint one by the way he's behaving...show up, take the slotted 10th place money and then go out and show the NFL and your team mates that he should have been drafted higher...at best this year, he'll play in blowouts, even if he's signs.....what a bad decision he is making..if he sits out the year, he'll be lucky to be drafted in the 3rd round in 2010.

I had a hearty laugh over Carl's comment: "Tell Crabby that the 49ers are going to draft him again next year if he sits out and re-enters the draft." Great plan --(just joking), but very funny!

I voted for #1; just let him sit and STEW over losing a whole season of playing and all those millions of bucks. It's just very sad that he has such a poor sense of the damage he is doing to his REPUTATION and what a super-colossal ego he is unmasking to the world.

To think that he has only played for 2 years in college and he believes he is God's gift to the Pigskin universe is PROOF how unrealistically immature the youngster is by holding out for an entire season. What a shameful waste of God-given talent!

Nobody will ever know what kind of rookie season he COULD have had if he doggedly persists in sitting it out. He will have lost the respect of his fans and teammates and most THINKING sports reporters--not to mention the loss of millions of dollars due to an over-inflated sense of self-pride never before displayed in NFL history. WOW!

I have listened to most of 9ers alumni (past players: Montana,Lott & Rice) and everybody said that he should have been in camp and he's the one losing out.
Even if he gets drafted in 1st round next year he WON'T make the money he asking today.

  • Old9erfan - 15 years ago

If Craptree doesn't sign before tomorrow, the Niners should reduce the offer 1M weekly until Nov 17 and trade him by March 1st of 2010 to wherever he likes to go and if he ever gets re-drafted next year I hope he goes in the 7th round because other teams are watching those diva players and I believe other teams will learn from the 49ers dilemma with Craptree this season. On the other hand, even if he signs he will not be respected by either the fans or his teamates until he proves himself, so bottom line he lost either way. I hope the 9ers do very well and make to post season so he can feel a little sqeeze

  • carl - 15 years ago

scare him. tell him the 49ers are goning to draft him again next year if he sits out and re enters the draft next year if they can't get trade value. he could sit out next year too and loose what 20mil x2.

  • nover - 15 years ago

It's a tough situation. The kid was a two time Biletnikoff Award winner in college. He only played his freshman and sophomore seasons before entering the draft. So, he was the best college WR in the nation for the two seasons he played. He is a once per decade type of player with tremendous talent along with all the diva baggage of all the elite WRs these days. There is no doubt the niners want this kid to wear the red & gold on sundays. Hopefully, the two sides will come to a conclusion sooner rather than later. It is not a lock that he could be traded for a 1st round pick ...

I think there were good reasons that Crabtree "dropped" in the draft from a Top 3 to the 10th spot. Obviously, his injury was a major concern (and not being able to participate at the combine didn't help). But his deva/entourage reputation seem to follow him everywhere. Also, there were questions about the teams/people he played against.
The 49ers drafted him because of need and that he is "a talent". I 'm sure that they were hoping that all of this other stuff would disappear and that he would have a solid, successful career with the 49ers.
The 49ers now appear to have cold feet about Crabtree joining the organization. And while I haven't been a fan of the York management style I would certainly agree with them if they've cooled on Crabtree.
It is mind-boggling to me that in an industry that is soley based on age, health and performance he would elect to sit out a year just on principle.
    That it inself is insanity.

  • BrothaTuna - 15 years ago

I wasn't comfortable with the choices as offered, but I voted for leaving the offer on the table, (but pro-rated for number of available games). Then after that November deadline (11/12?) halfway through the season I'd begin planning to trade negotiating rights after March 1st for best offer available. I wouldn't lower the offer (even though my heart and temper would enjoy it). If the team stays on the High Road until the Nov deadline they can't be considered cheap.

  • Roy - 15 years ago

That's another reason to write off Crabtree, as well. Usually, receivers don't contribute much for most of their rookie year any way, but in this case, we've got a guy that has had zero practice, which means the entire year is a goner. The 49ers should start droping their offer now, to discount for the lost year.

  • ally oop - 15 years ago

It is doubtful Crabtree will be able to help the team much for at least 4-6 weeks even if he signs today. A first round draft pick like Crabtree is signed with the expectation he will be able to contribute to the team the first year and the pay is based on that. Lower the value of the offer to compensate for a basically wasted first year. His actions indicate a person with a high ego, poor decision-making abilities and basically a pain in the you know what. Move on. Aggressively pursue getting something from the possible conflict of interest brought about by the Deion Sanders interview. Make a trade when possible.

  • Roy - 15 years ago

Time to move on, there is simply no way for this "relationship" to work now.

After such a protracted resistance, it would be a disaster for Crabtree to now meekly fall in line, join the team, bump another player off the team, and forever be jeered by his fellow teammates.

At the same time, the 49ers can't afford to compromise, not even by an inch, because that would be an open invitation to every other agent in the future to test the 49ers' will to the limit, because they know the 49ers will cave in.

Eugene Parker has let a no-win situation develop that has no graceful exits from the impasse for any of the parties now (Crabtree, 49ers or himself).

  • SFGiantsAndNinersFan - 15 years ago

At some point Crabtree is going to realize that he is not going to be picked anywhere close to the #10 pick if he tries to re-enter the draft. A year off from football, his "diva" mentality and his perceived need for a big paycheck, along with a strong draft for wide-receivers will lower his stock significantly. Crabtree and Parker at some point are going to have to take the #10 money because there is no way Crabtree is going to approach that in 2010, even if a couple of teams were willing to pay him that after the 2009 draft, especially since he will be picked a lot lower.

Crabtree still has a belief that the 49ers will pay him more that the $20 million on the table, but that's just not going to happen. This contract is about more than just Michael Crabtree for Jed York, its the first draft choice of his tenure, and therefore his reputation is on the line in this situation. York and the 49ers will gain more in the long-term if they do not cave in, because future this will be in the mind of all future negotiations with the team, and bluffing a hold-out will be much less salient. Once Crabtree and Parker figure out York is serious about the #10 slot they have no choice but to come around. That may take awhile, but it should happen, especially once Parker starts gauging interest in the 2010 draft.

  • Razoreater - 15 years ago

Trade bait next year to the Cowboys. If not let him be drafted in round 2 or 3.

  • GIEFF - 15 years ago

anonymous1, you're a coward. We all know who you are. If you're going to screw over our team, at least have the balls to face us.

Unless there's another reason you're following the blog of a team you hate?

  • Lets Play Ball - 15 years ago

If he Crabtreen thinks he's worth more, prove it to everyone that he should have been drafted higher. Suck it up, play football, and EARN a bigger contract.

  • Brandon - 15 years ago

The more I think about it, whether or not he signs is going to depend on how the Niners open the season. If they start out say 0-4 and it looks like the season is going to be a disaster, I think you can pretty much bank on Crabtree sitting out. If, however, we start out with a few wins and there's some excitement around the team, I think you'll see Crabtree back at the negotiating table. Just a thought.

Either way, I think everyone agrees that he's doing some pretty severe damage to his already questionable reputation.

  • stodgman - 15 years ago

It would only take a couple of TD's and the Niner fans would be swinging happily from this guy's testosterone producing units. We would quickly forget his PAST diva status and probably fear his FUTURE diva status.

Crabtree needs to gain some maturity. Sometimes realizing that you are acting like an idiot is hard to realize. The Niners must FORCE him to grow up a little. They need to quietly tell his agent the contract offer will diminish as real games begin. Let him ponder how he will make up the $3-4 million he loses this year by signing a better deal next year (RIGHT! ROFL).

  • Jeff - 15 years ago

If he's not signed by Saturday, lower the contract offer and prepare to trade him away next Spring. We've already had one T.O. on this team...I'm not prepared to sit and watch another one. Good luck to him, his cousin, his agent and Deion Sanders.

  • Annon - 15 years ago

It's hard to see 49ers fans getting behind Crabtree at this point (should any of this get worked out).

Move on without him and let another team pay him what he thinks he's worth.

  • Tim Kocee - 15 years ago

The ego this guy must have! Every analyst and commentator in the NFL thinks he is being ridiculous in thinking he needs to be paid like a top 5 pick, but he and his idiot advisor Deion think he's worth breaking the slotting system. I say the Niners give him one last concession - they keep the base offer the same, but make the 8M in incentives that are on the table more realistically reachable. If he still holds out, reduce his offer by 1M every week, hold onto is rights until the last possible second, and see how he does in the draft next year. Good luck prima donna. Enjoy the money you made off of the jerseys the Niner fans bought for themselves and their kids.

  • Nashville Alvin - 15 years ago

unless we want to turn into the Washington Redskins of the west and over pay for playa's now and in the future, I say stay the course with our offer, reduce it weekly and let him catch passes from Trent Dilfer.

  • Dustin - 15 years ago

Honestly, we all know crabs was a steal at the #10. so I can see paying him less than the #7 and more than the slotted amount at #10. However, there are two major problems IMO with doing that. 1, we have two first rounders and a couple contract extension negotiations coming up. It would pit the organization in a tough situation by caving in now. I say we pay Patrick Willis what he is worth and show the rest of the league that the 49ers is a great organization to play for and that they reward talent and hard work. 2, and this I think is the more important issue in the Crabtree situation, I don't think crabs wants to play in SF, period. It's not so much about the money. Did anyone else get this feeling looking at him on draft day. Those first images didn't reflect elation inhis eyes, it was more a look of fake excitement. Look at what Eli manning did, flat out told the chargers to trade him right away. And the Richard Seymoure situation is another example of a player that doesn't want to play for the team he is on. The best thing for Crabs and the 9ers is to trade him to Dallas (where he wANts to play) and get 1st round in 2011 and an extra 3rd round in the 2010 draft. We don't want 3 1st rounders next year, that might break the bank. Assuming there is still a bank in play.

  • anonymous1 - 15 years ago

No I am not Crabtree you dipshit. I am just not a delusional Niner's fan like you are.

  • lenniwinks - 15 years ago

    anonymous1 is crabtree

  • anonymous1 - 15 years ago

Screw the Niner's that team sh*t and they don't have QB worth sh*t anyway. Crab will be better off on another team anyway.

  • John - 15 years ago

Let him twist in the wind since this has been his choice. Move on without him and get whatever he's worth in a trade before the draft. He's damaged his worth to the Niners in a number of ways. All that hype about him wanting to play? He hasn't proved anything to anyone in the NFL. Potential is that, just something that's possible, not actual. At the #10 spot, he's easily worth a late first round pick, an early second round pick and just about any spot after the second round.

What could the Niner do with three first round picks? Sounds like a "bonanaza" to me! (Thanks to Joe Starkey for that one!).

  • DaHwan49er - 15 years ago

You get tired of hearing about Greedtree, We don't need him, Get tired of reading about him, If we keep him, He be more problums down the road, Any team wants to give him $40 million, Let them have him, To me as a 49er fan, He is worthless diva. Something he earn, Move on

  • 4therush - 15 years ago

He was drafted at # 10 We pay him what a #10 draft pick gets. We dont pay players what they think they are worth. He has not done anything in the NFL.
