Football is such a team sport that winning is evidence of achievement by individuals working together towards a common goal. It is much more of a team sport than say, basketball where one star can carry the team. In football, that is harder to do since the playing field is so much larger.
Now, for the facts. The Panthers have never gone winless in the preseason. With winning comes confidence. I think you will have plenty of Panther players questioning themselves and others. If they play poorly in game one, as I think they will, it may doom the rest of the season. This team under Fox, has alternated between having winning and loosing seasons every year. It proves the difficulty Fox has with his team once the schedule gets tough since you were winning the prior year.
The problems with the team begin at the top. The firing of the 2 sons could not come at a worse time. The hiring of Meeks as defensive coach is a mistake. Tell me, when you think of the Colts (his previous employer) do you think of offense or defense? You think of Peyton Manning and lots of points. The facts reveal that the Panthers actually played the fairly well agaisnt them. This defense has the same problems that have bothered this team yearly. They cannot stop the run, they have ZERO pass rush, their secondary gets beat in short coverage anytime the other team wants it. The offense is a little better than average. Good running backs, an average quarterback that is either great or horrible. He tries to do more than he is generally capable of. We have lost most of our backups on the O-line. Receivers are better than average.
I don't buy the injury problem. The Ravens had 3 starters out and their quarterback looked like a pro bowl starter. All other teams experience injuries too. Your backup players are supposed to be able to come in at this level and play also. The Panthers also start slowly in repairing mistakes. They usually have many pealties early in the season killing drives. With Fox's conservative approach to the game, calling a 5 yard play when you need 12, means a lot of field goals instead of touchdowns, and a lot of punts instead of risking a pass interception. My prediction: 7 wins and 9 losses. I hope I'm wrong and will be the first to admit it. Maybe by Christmas, there will be a lot of good John Wayne movies on tv.
the last thing that i'm worried about are the panthers.if obummer's policies on healthcare and cap and trade pass we won't be able to afford to go to any games or watch them on television.
I have been a panther fan ever since the start. They have had their ups & downs, with more downs than ups. I feel that we do not have a defense that is up to NFL standards, when 4 of our starters can't stop a 3rd string player. Our offensive line needs a lot of improvement. Pre-season lets the coaches know where they stand, it just seems like they have done nothing about it. There is one standout in the pre-season, #33, if they let him go, all the coaches need to be replaced. They will look horrible against Philly, I predict the stands will be half-empty by the end of the 1st quarter. I just hope they get their act together.
Barterman, you better take up gardening then.
until they get rid of jake and fox, they will just be more of the same. win some, but lose the big ones.
Obviously, considering that there are only three comments regarding the Panthers, most people don't give a flip! Welcome to my camp!
Bread and circuses!
If you assume the preseason is an audition to join the team you would expect enthusiasm, eagerness, best effort, concentration and dash and smash. Have seen all four games and I all have seen is hohum and errors.
looks like the team playing the last 6 games of 2008.
