Are you shocked by the treatment of baby male chicks?

    Disgusted, yes. Shocked, no.

When you have a system where monetary cost is the only method of accounting, it is unsurprising that only economics is what defines morality. Until the marketplace becomes aware of what the true costs of food are, nothing will change. A green economy must harness not suppress business if it wishes to survive. How can ethical action be placed on a balance sheet?

Figure that out and you help heal the planet.

As was said by one of the greatest humans, Mahatma Gandhi, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated". We all have a long way to go.... and most religions and philosophies will agree that indiscriminately high levels of kindness and compassion are the measures of any great faith. I can't look at those photos and want to continue support that system. Even if the chicks were gassed first - it would still be too much like the worst moments of human history.

I voted yes and would also have appreciated a god-free quote.

I'm not too shocked anymore though, but it is hard to watch. This is one one of the reasons I went vegan 7 years ago. It is a cruel, unhealthy, and completely unnecessary.

I am shocked that it is handled in this way. I agree that those chicks could be raised as food or if there is a need to "dispose" of them it could be handled more humanly.

I'm shocked that you are shocked. Meat=Death. Did you think that Chickens, cows, pigs and fish just don't wake up one day? The chicks have it good; Fish spend their lives free and are then trapped in huge nets. Desperate to escape they are hauled, en masse, out of the water and dumped into the boat's hold where they slowly suffocate.

Completely inhumane. I vote YES. I think the "God" part is unnecessary as there are many who are spiritual, who may believe in the cheer goodness of humanity, a higher power, or whatever. Regardless of one's religious beliefs, this cruelty is unacceptable. Why not donate these chicks -- plenty of starving people out there. Not only CRUEL, but wasteful.

Although I voted yes, I agree with BabyHuman. However, if you take the God part out of the quote it is applicable.

Although I am not vegan, or even a vegetarian, I have already decided that I am no longer eating meat that is not free range or even better organic. If a restaurant can not tell me that their meat is not coming from a factory farm, and in a convincing manner then I will be eating veggies at that restaurant!

In the last day I've already eaten more veggies than I have in the last year I think. It's going to be tough, but I think it's worth it.

I am still shuddering when I think of our inhumanity. I voted Yes although I too did not like the reference to God.

I wanted to vote Yes, but not for the reference to God.
