Were Hingham parents right or wrong to complain about President Obama's memoir being on students' summer reading list?

HINGHAM IS NOTHING BUT POOR TRASH...WHO GIVES A RATS ARSE

  • I read it - 15 years ago

Have any of you read the book? Propaganda? Come on! Obama wrote the book when he was in law school, almost a decade before he became a politician. It's all about his life growing up and trying to find his own identity as a half-black, half-white American. It's not political at all. It's actually surprisingly personal, and tells you a lot about the man we elected as president. The book is brutally honest and frank, and if Obama knew he would one day run for office, there is no way he would EVER write a book like that. I recommend the book to anyone who is black, white, or an American. That is what the book is about, not politics. Oh, and 10-15 parents complained out of 1,100? That's nothing...my guess is that most people who read the book, whether they were Republicans or Democrats, saw no reason to complain.

GOOD for the parents in HINGHAM -- finally some people in Massachusetts with some brains! There is enough liberal indoctrination going on in our public schools without forcing children to read Obama's propaganda. How about teaching kids about the Constitution and our Founding Fathers. And the comment about Massachusetts becoming a "red state" -- we should be so lucky! We're the laughingstock of the Country.

To the writer that referred to Obama's book as "propaganda" and who refuses to have her "children exposed to such things" - I am sorry that your children do not have the intellectual capacity to read, analyze and come to their own opinions. It must be a terrible burden for you and your husband to realize that you have failed to raise your children to think analytically and independently. Hopefully, they will be eligible for some government aid when they cannot find a job.

I lived in Hingham for nearly 20 years. I am glad I am no longer there. What a bunch of closed minded nitwits. I hope my sons (who graduated from HHS) do not learn any thing from this stuff

hingham is not a red or blue state it's a state that is very unexceptable to anything that does not look like the typical white face.

    Communist - Socialist

Propaganda is what it is about and I refuse to have my children exposed to such things. I do have that freedom? To allow what and what not is good for MY child. How dum does the president Obama think we are?

We are no longer a red state we are becoming a communist state. What about the freedom of choice. Some parents don't want their kids exposed to all this propaganda in a school setting.

This is a disgrace. Lets decide the book to read for the summer at our next Town Meeting and take our town back!

When did we become a red state?

Why is in this book so bad? I can remember some people being upset about "The Catcher in the Rye", and "Huck Finn" is still banned in some parts of the country. I read both and would recommend them to my kids. What is the fear?

I can't believe that people are still trying to "ban" books from reading lists or dictate what people can read and not read while in school. Reading is one of the best ways to learn about the entire world and DIFFERENT ideas/ways of life. I am a parent, too. The library is one of my family's favorite places to go to. Don't hold your children back!!!
