So you support the BLM's proposal to zero out the 12 Herd Area and over 1.5 million acres in Ely District while doubling the grazing of cattle on the same land?

These beautiful creatures should be protected forever, they are part of our country a very important part. How could anyone look at them and not be moved by their beauty, wildness and strength. Why do the lawmakers in this country feel the need to change or destroy what is natural and a part of our history and culture.

Horses SHOULD be protected! Cattle are the problem to soil erosion & other grass & field problems! Horses are valuable to me! If the horses die, I wouldn't want to keep living! Because to me, if there are no horses, what is the point on life for me? And if people think that horses & other human companions are over populated, & have to be spayed & neutered, then they need to fly over the world in a plane VERY LOW to the ground & look out the window & write down what they see! HUMANS SHOULD BE SPAYED & NEUTERED!! HUMANS ARE WAY OVER POPULATED!!!!! No rude comments!!

After watching the documentary on saving the wild horses and burros. And seeing what these heartless people and the government have done and are still doing to the majestic creatures. I have never been so ashamed of my government and how they can let this happen. Obama you will never get my support again. How dare you sign a bill letting them slaughter these innocent animals. Leave them alone. You are nothing but cruel..Obama let your daughters watch this documentary and see just how proud they will be of their father.

I am really outraged at how the company BP is Wanting the land set aside years ago for the wild horses to live out thier days peaceably. But the Land management people, like any other gov't agency has forgot the real purpose of this program. July 1,I watched on a documentary show the real truth about what is happening to these horses. More people need to stand up for these spirit of the western days gone by animals and keep speaking up for them, while they are so called being put in shoort term holding pens-not days, but months with no room,no shade, crowded in pens with open wounds and sometimes trampeled for having no rooom. Then talking about slaughtering these horses,of course the government sees nothing wrong -of course the same gov't is the ones who took the land and thier horses from the indians and then killed them. Bottom line-greed for our own need, and don't want to be held accountable. Like a picture I saw of the land management crew tied front and neck and left him in the sun for 1/2 hr and it couldn't hardly get up. They paint such a pretty picture, but if you would have seen this documentary it would make you furious and the government sees nothing wrong. They REALLY need our voice for help and keep adding to the list of other people to tell.

Sure the wild horses are actually descendants of feral horses, but they have adapted like many other wild animals. America has land set aside specifically for their protection so they can live and thrive as they should. Pressure from big oil and cattle ranchers have nearly decimated many herds. I don't agree with taking them from their land because someone says they are ruining the land. That is a bunch of poppycock. It is a proven fact that cattle destroy land much worse then horses. Sadly many people think the cattle put on the grazing land is to feed Americans but that is far from the truth. Meat from those cattle is shipped overseas to other countries. So the only people who benefit is the rancher, not one person, even the government loses. It is free to the taxpayers to let the horses roam free, but when captured...it costs us millions to provide food, shelter and vet care. I don't see the problem with leaving them alone. They know how to look for food ,water and shelter out there, they don't need us caring for them. As far as the horses taking food from the other animals like elk and deer, not so! There is millions of acres for them to share and they have their own migration routes and areas for summer and winter grazing. Americans need to voice their disapproval of their tax dollars being wasted on these unnecessary roundups. They do far more harm than good, especially to the mares when pregnant and the young foals running too far,too soon after birth. Many die from broken legs, broken necks and other tragic injuries. Not to mention being sent to slaughter because someone decided they didn't want to keep it or would rather have the money slaughter brings. It is just plain wrong....leave them alone!!!

I think that wild horses should run free not be killed, they aren't just from this time they are from our past and what people should say to people is that these wild horses have been in our past and they should be in our future to. :) I think no sorry i know these wild horses need us right know i mean back then we needed them and know we need them, well we don't need them but the wild horse loving groups and animal lovers need them.

I do not support the BLM's proposal to zero out the 12 Herd Area and over 1.5 million acres in Ely District while doubling the grazing of cattle on the same land because the horses are protected by law and that isn't protection. People worked hard to protect the horses and make those laws.

horses are not protected by the law anymore, Obama passed a law that said they can be slaughtered! i think that is horrible and that they should be protected and not used for dog food, fertilizer, or eating for pleasure! SAVE THE HORSES!

We human beings have become cruel and unfeeling creatures.Wild horses and burros are Gods living, breathing creations,we should be doing all in our power to protect them from the BLM. We all need to contact the BLM and tell them what we think of them, maybe they should be relocated. Please everyone do what you can, donate what you can to save these animals.

Loaded poll, somewhat dumb. "Yes," "no," or "not sure" would be more appropriate answers than the follow-up comment included in the response. How about: "No, the horses should be shipped off to countries that slaughter them for food." Or, "Yes, wild horse populations should be managed to keep them in balance with the land's capability to support them." The possibilities are endless in a "push poll" like this. Quite naive.

  • samantha goff - 13 years ago

In my opinion wild horses should be protected just as much as humans.I mean they are harmless if dealt with carefully. They can't speak for their selfs so its time for us to speak for them! ! ! ! ! !

  • vanessa salinas - 13 years ago

i don't think cattle are more important than wild horses they should stop killing horses i really don't care about burros they should take more care of horses

  • Zion Hill - 13 years ago

I think wild horses she be able to roam around free!!!!!!! Its cruel how people kill && eat horses just because nobody will pay for food or look after them. They should still be able to live and roam freely without getting into harm because of heartless people in this world, and for you Suzanne its rude of you to think that horses cant roam around on public land just VERY VERY RUDE && HEARTLESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the bureau of land management is a totally depraved federal govt agency. some of them have taken bribes from oil companies, taken rides in their airplanes, taken money and vacations in their homes. if the oil companies do it, the cattle ranchers do it too. this is nothing but money and venality and mendacity going on. the horses can exist there perfectly well. they always did. if you find people being merciless to horses put them in jail for a few decades. the citizens in this country have written over one million letters to save those wild horses in their own birth sites. blm is a holdover from the antienvironmental bush/cheney scum. and obama is letting it continue. we need to vote these scum out of office.

In point of fact, the horses are reintroduced native wildlife. The entire genus Equus originated in North America and they lived here for millions of years, spreading over the world over the various land bridges that came and went. About 5,000 years ago, they were almost wiped out here by an extinction event. The only species extant at that time was Equus caballus. The Spaniards reintroduced horses to their native land in the 1500s. The horses the Spaniards brought were Equus caballus - the exact same species that almost went extinct 5,000 years before.

These horses have been living in their native land for almost 500 years now. They existed in perfect harmony with the environment and other wildlife until the white man came along with his cattle. The horses are perfectly adapted to their habitat, and survive there very well if left alone. Eurasian derived cattle, on the other hand, are very poorly adapted to the high desert environment.

Besides all that, there are less than 30,000 horses and 6 or 7 MILLION cattle. Even the GAO has repeatedly reported that it's the cattle NOT the horses that are destroying the range, and that no matter how many horses the BLM removes the range doesn't improve because the horses are not the problem.

It doesn't matter if you hold these animals 'wild' or 'feral'; the simple fact is their progenitors pre-date the arrival of Caucasians by several hundred years.
Applying domestic Horse standards to Wild Horses is foolish. Wild Horses & Burros are now and have always been survivors. But to say they 'compete' with livestock forforage assumes the Wild Equine has any chance at all when they are outnumbered and under-represented by the Bureau.
'Thriving ecological balance' was so much easier to maintain before humans began 'managing' the land and the life upon it. Everyone presumes wildlife must stay in the same areas as Wild Equines and they DON'T. Wild life can and does roam. If you find wildlife with Wild Equines, it's because that's where they choose to be.
And penning up Wild Equines to save their lives is about the dumbest logic I've ever heard of.
But the BLM's Wild Horse & Burro program is less about the welfare of Wild Equines and more about the Bureau asserting it's power over Federal (Public) lands and those who hold special favor: Livestock & Mining Industries.
THAT is an irrefutable fact. You have only to look at Grazing permit areas and Mining Claims to see what gets top priority, and what's considered disposable.

The "wild" horses found on public lands are not native to this country (as the cattle allowed to decimate publics ar also not). They are more accurately FERAL horses. No one loves horses (animals) more than I do. For all the bleeding hearts about BLM's policies of control, you are obviously less informed than some of us. Leaving the horses out there in minimal conditions for health or survival is inhumane. Sure they compete with the cattle for food and water, that's a whole other story. They also are competing against the true wildlife such as deer. elk, and antelope for forage and water. The wildlife is adapted to living in what litle shelter is available during periods of extreme heat and cold. The hoses are not, and will not adapt, they suffer, die of thirst, starvation, and freeze to death when their stamina against the elements are compromised. Another real hardship for the horses around the Black Rock Desert are the PEOPLE. Go see for yourself what recreation those horses afford for the gun toting four wheeler types. They are not shooting pictures. They often will chase the horses to exhaustion, often causing injury, and death. On and on, BS is prevailing in the debate often from people who really know NOTHING about "wild" horses.

Nice poll. I'm glad there are so few that think the horses don't belong on public land and even fewer that feel that cattle are "worth more" than horses.
