Should the U.S. bail a U.N. tech project that is tens of millions of dollars over budget?

Why don't we just pay them to come take over our country, abolish our own constitution, tax the hell out of us, tell us how many pieces of toilet tissue we can wipe our arse with, monitor our electronic purchases to make sure we comply, and arrest/fine us if we don't.

  • Twitch - 14 years ago

The US should pay their dues, and all abck monies they have promised to the UN for disaster relief, The fact that we promise money we never pay makes us a dishonest nation. We are the Bernie Madoff of the international community, making promises we never intend to keep. We are international criminals at this point, and I think we should actually try to behave like Americans and be honest about our debts. Our failures on this issue should make us all ashamed that we ave let our government tarnish our image. I don't think the world should justifiably hate Americans because our government is full of jerks and criminals, and has been for over 30 years.

If anyone - even the 'fair and balanced' reporters at FOX News, had bothered to READ the report - they would see that the cost savings are well into the hundreds of millions of dollars. The fact that some of you don't like the UN has no bearing on whether or not it should function efficiently. The UN is. Face it. Now, would you rather it ran like an efficient organization - or have multiple un-integrated systems to support for the critical business operations.
Get a clue people. This isn't a bailout.

THE UNITED STATES NEEDS TO KICK THE UN OUT OF THE US AND DISCONTINUE ITS MEMBERSHIP WITH THE UN. THE UN IS A GARBAGE INSTITUTION THAT SHOULD BE DISOLVED ALLTOGHETHER TALK ABOUT A WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY

  • frankie - 15 years ago

without the UN, we can't get mail and can't fly to other countries because it get countries to agree to cooperate on those things. also most of what the UN buys is american so i guess that helps us.

i tried the link to this UN report and it shuts down every time. WTF?

  • Michelle - 15 years ago

George Russell -- STOP manufacturing false "news" about the UN! The report isn't even accessible on your site, because you know it doesn't say what you tell us it says, and you don't want us to call you out on it. If the UN is trying to fix its problems, then they should go for it -- how is that a bad thing?

I saw the report elsewhere, and it actually tells us that this may cost more than originally thought (better to be transparent and I'm glad they're up front about it). Plus the member countries VOTED to postpone this -- so it's not "behind schedule." Hard to believe you call yourself a reporter.

I suggest they remove the ability of Foreign Dips to NOT pay their parking fines, use that money to pack up the UN and ship it out of the USA... They need to be on an ocean liner... no country... Just somewhere out in the ocean.

  • barnbaby - 15 years ago

    NO!
The U.N. is nothing but a parasitic money pit and forum for anti U.S. rhetoric,
    kick 'em out!

  • Paul - 15 years ago

The idea of dumping more money down the UN sewer boggles the mind. They have proven time and again that the organization is run by corrupt and mendacious individuals. I find the idea that we should even stay in the UN repugnant. Let them free load somewhere in Eurabia...

  • Russell W. MacDonald - 15 years ago

We (the United States) needs to pull out of the UN now. It is a worthless entity which squanders money on themselves without helping others in need. Furthermore, the UN is powerless to stop brush wars in Africa or elsewhere. Let the Africans and others fight it out among themselves without involving the world.

"Were the people that voted yes just plain confused?"

Yes, these are the people who are still admitting they voted Obama into office.

The rest are liars as are the constituants of Mass. Ask anyone up there if they kept voting Teddy "the swimmer" back into office and surprisingly no one ever says yes.

At least now everyone can stop lying.

  • e-r - 15 years ago

    Waste of taxpayer money!
Graft and corruption in that organization is shocking.

  • B52 - 15 years ago

Kick the Un out of the US and send the executive branch and @$%&!! congress with them.

  • Justin - 15 years ago

Were the people that voted yes just plain confused? Last I checked we had the most debt of any nation in the entire world. We shouldn't be bailing anyone out right now.

  • Justin - 15 years ago

  • RK - 15 years ago

Do we even pay our dues on time?

  • RK - 15 years ago

That is a stupid question. Nowhere in the story does it say or even insinuate that we are being asked or are considering a "bail out". But it sure gets you conservatives up in arms and frothing at the mouth.

  • Joe Parks - 15 years ago

THIS IS ONE STUPID QUESTION! THE FEW THAT SAID "YES" MUST HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD THE QUESTION.

  • Rod - 15 years ago

Not only NO, but HELL NO!! What has the UN done for us lately. I agree with others that we should pull out of the UN and send them somewhere else. France maybe.

  • Rick - 15 years ago

    NO. NO. NO.

  • Jack Crenshaw - 15 years ago

I wouldn't give the UN diplomats a quarter to feed the parking meter, much less $300 mil for upgraded computers.

That's if they even had to feed parking meters, anyhow.

  • brian - 15 years ago

You think we could trade them in as a clunker? $4000 bucks would be more value than we ever got out of the UN.

  • scott - 15 years ago

It's time the US helps itself out first. Enough is enough. We borrow and lend money like it was water. It's time we look out for number one. Bail them out??? Hell NO I say. Lets throw them out instead. All the UN wants to do is take control of our country and take away our liberites and freedoms that they all wish they had in their countries. The USA needs to take care of it's own problems first before we help out anyone else. Where is the money coming from? Does Mr. Obama have some extra cash tucked away in one of his magical closets?

  • Pablo - 15 years ago

The UN should get out of the USA. Go set up shop elsewhere. Go to France and let them foot the bill.

  • Winston - 15 years ago

The U. N. is one of the most corrupt organizations in America and the world.
It uses power against the one country that helps, The United States as usual.
Let them find another place to live.
They operate better as a NGO doing aid work. Their word is worth nothing in the wold of politics , or reality.

  • Derek - 15 years ago

We already provide the largest share of the UN budget. The UN needs to learn how to work within its budget, just likes the federal government needs to do. The UN is also an antiquated organization in line with the League of Nations. Lets scrape the whole thing, or at least make them move out of NY.

  • scott in michigan - 15 years ago

as a matter of fact, i did misread the question. i glanced at it and read "should the US bail on the UN project" hell yes we should bail! not BAIL OUT the project. subtract one from the yes blitherings. we should shitcan the UN right out of this county. it's just another money pit of our tax dollars going to waste. the powers that be appear to have a BAIL OUT obsession... BAIL ME OUT! all the money i give the govt they fucking give to someone else!! lets make all the rich people more rich. they couldn't manage thier way out of a paper bag, but we can BAIL THEM OUT of their greediness, which is how we wound up here to begin with. thanx osama, obama... whatever the fuck your un-american name is

  • BullDurham - 15 years ago

The comments about how much everyone else pays and how little the US pays are, to put it mildly, not based on facts. The US currently pays 22% of the UN budget. Japan, the next biggest contributor, pays just over 16%, while the next largest is around 8%. (For you French who have expressed a negative opinion, France pays a whopping 6.3%) The US ALSO pays an additional 27% of all UN "peacekeeping" expenses. Given the consistently anti-US attitude and blame-game played by the other 150+ countries, I am adamant about NOT paying any more - and would greatly prefer much LESS!!

  • Richard New - 15 years ago

What do they do with computers? They use them to control our lives and promote and support their Marxist ideals. NONONONONONONOH

    To Don Kite "amen" brother.

  • Kimo-sabee - 15 years ago

Pay it with what? Borrow more money? Are you kiddin'? The US is broke and borrowing money like it grows on Chinese trees. We need to stop with the UN...they are all anti-American anyway!

  • Lew Wetzel - 15 years ago

Since no one at the UN seems to like the US why should we stay where we are not wanted? Move it out of New York and to some really neutral country like France, Russia, Saudi Arabia,Yemen, Venezuela or Cuba. If we would stop paying our assessed quota to the UN I doubt there would be a UN for very long. Tell them to do the sexually impossible.

  • steve - 15 years ago

Guess I didn't read the question as I voted yes. Hell no.. not a single penny. We need to get out of the UN and remove them from our soil. Make the UN Building a homeless shelter!

  • jim - 15 years ago

The UN serves no real purpose for the Nations that communicate with each other. It can only serve as a listening post for the folks that hate us.

masterbation training for five year olds-disgusting! I vote no support at all.

  • Don Kite - 15 years ago

    Is this another sick joke?

We can ill-afford to bail out anyone else - especially the U.N.! Just because they have diplomatic immunity they think they can park anywhere, do anything. The U.N. owes New York City $18m, despite a crackdown. But don't take my word for it: Copy/paste the following
from USA Today in your browser: www.usatoday.com/news/world/2007-01-18-diplomat-parking-fines_x.htm

Let the OPEC nations pay for any technical upgrades - not "We The People." The U.S.A. should not bail out the United Nations; let them bail themselves out. The U.N. dug its own hole. Now it is high time they dig themselves out.

Another way of solving the U.N.'s financial woes is this: Close the U.N. and turn it into a homeless shelter. Just think of the many homeless people in the Nation it would accommodate.

Move the U.N. to one of the Arab states. Then let them pound sand! And God only knows how much sand and oil they really have.

This may sound like a radical idea, but being the Conservative that I am, Mayor Bloomberg should seriously ponder this idea.

    Comments, please?

  • mrbob81 - 15 years ago

Not only no but HELL NO are we supposed to be the bailout country for the rest of the world? Obama is trying all this bailout bs and it is not working. Send the UN packing, maybe Canada or Mexico will take them.

  • Justin - 15 years ago

I'm one of the few who said yes.

The way I see it - The UN is spending a lot of money, much of it probably going to US companies.

This is probably as much of a stimulus to the US economy as much of what is in the stimulus package. Why not help out the UN in the process...

  • doug - 15 years ago

sam- did you smoke crake before you wrote your comment? way to be part of the solution. by the way a year from november they move your polling place to chucky cheese.

  • shane sabl - 15 years ago

UMM why should we? The UN is a joke. When we go into troubled places...a coalition or a UN mission is comprised of 90 +% US asset, money, and life. The UN would be nothing without the USA. Yes there is a pool of money that the UN uses from all the countries, but again, the US contributes a good majority of that fund! The UN can kiss my poor over taxed american behind!

  • doug shetterly - 15 years ago

who the heck is going to bail out the U.S. when is it our turn

  • Mike - 15 years ago

No we should not bail out the UN. In the year 2005 the US contributed 362.7 million us dollars to the UN. Japan was second with 279.6 million us dollars. It is my belief that other industial nations should contibute their fair share to have an equal voice on world matters.

Cancel their lease and move them out of the US to some other country!!

  • Paul - 15 years ago

Pat is not even close to being from France. More likely some uber liberal or more accurately a neo-statist. Yep France has been around for a long time and you have the U.S.of A to thank for it. Of course the French are so weak they gladly adopted the ways of the Nazi's when they were invaded and beaten in what a couple of weeks. Poor Pat a wanna be Frenchy dressed in a progressive's clothes.

  • Bobb - 15 years ago

Hey Pat, tell us of a war that France has ever WON... Besides the French Revolution. LOLZ! The US OUT OF THE UN. THE UN OUT OF THE US! No more sucking on the tit of the US whenever their hungry. They do nothing for the US. They bring no value or worth to the US.

  • Thomas Welch - 15 years ago

Response to Sam. Sam, when you say "...the USA always takes money from other people, for instance the UK only finished paying their loan back from world war two...", are you aware of how stupid that comment sounds? When we spent our soldiers lives, in World Wars I and II, did we make a profit? No, I think not! Instead, under the Marshall Plan we rebuilt Western Europe! And we dare ask them to pay a part of the monetary cost. When we spent our soldiers lives in Korea and Vietnam, did we make a profit? No, I think not. How about Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan, have we made a profit? No, our soldiers died by the thousands, are still dying, and what was/is our profit? None! During the Cold War, when it was the United States alone who prevented USSR takeover of Western Europe, what was our profit? Nothing! When a natural disaster the United States is always one of the first countries to hold out a helping hand. Do we make a profit? No, we don't! In fact, if it wasn't for our largess to the rest of the world, perhaps we wouldn't be in the sorry economic strait we are in.

  • pat - 15 years ago

France has been here for many years and we have ruled the World more times than you and I would make a bet that we will be around a lot longer than the USA. I think the USA's dominance will be the shortest in history, you have only been a super power for 60 years and you are already starting to decline very fast.

  • paul - 15 years ago

    Pat

Somehow I doubt you are French. Probably just a troll trying to stir up the hornets nest. Since you can spell so well. Try Capital LOSER and then write it on your forehead.

As for the U.N. the real estate in NYC would be worht a ton of money. Give them their walking papers. Let those rich middle eastern countries pay their freight and submit our plans to withdraw. The sooner we re-establish ourselves a soveirgn nation the better. As for wars that never end go and count the wars in South America, Africa, and the middle east and when you add them all up including how long they have gone on come back and admit your an even bigger loser. Im done with you now..

  • DEH - 15 years ago

DIDN'T THE UN JUST THROW AWAY MILLIONS ON A PAINTING (MURIAL) THAT WAS TO BE FOR FOOD DISTRIBUTION? HOW MUCH OF THIS BUDGET HAVE THEY THROWN AWAY. NO, DO NOT BAIL THEM OUT FOR THIS!!!

  • dudleydoright - 15 years ago

Those 4% who voted "yes" work at the UN.

  • Tom - 15 years ago

Maybe the Unnecessary Niusance is looking at all the money Obama & Company are doling out and figure they'd better get in line b4 it runs out. A couple of hundred million is pocket change . . . right?

  • Will Kane - 15 years ago

Pat: We won two wars against the Brits! American Revolution and the War of 1812. On the other hand if the world had made France leave Southeast Asia after the end of WWII instead of allowing them to enslave the people of that region who knows what the world would look like today. Remember we were paying 80 percent of the French military budget for Vietnam before we picked up where they failed. What can you say about a country that has to have mercenaries fight their wars for them? Also, there were hundreds of Americans fighting for France before America entered either of the two world wars.

  • sinmiedo68 - 15 years ago

OK Pat-- This is the last I will say on this--
I do recognize that others did contribute greatly to the defeat of the Germans. but the fact remains that our boys established the second front by the invasion of Normandy and that the US did bail you out twice and............ we did not have a Vichy Government!!! (I think they were more or less sympathetic to the Nazis-- No??)_

  • Will Kane - 15 years ago

Pat/Richard: Throughout American history the French have been behind almost every war we have been involved, but we never learn. I recommend this book:
Our Oldest Enemy: A History of America's Disastrous Relationship with France. As Al Bundy of Married With Children always said "ah the French. What are they good for?".

  • pat - 15 years ago

Richard; france has won many wars and the USA has only won one war against the British and that was because we helped you, so you owe us.

  • John - 15 years ago

No just no but Hell No. I agree wil Bob, the UN need to move to Paris.

  • The Dude - 15 years ago

!!!! US ot of UN...UN out of the US !!!!

Make it a call to action slogan!

  • Dave - 15 years ago

Sigh.... Why bail the UN out when it is soooo functional in the world. Why just look at all the good the UN is doing. Halting terrorism (we see a reduction - right? Heard of any bombings lately?), feeding the world's hungry (everybody is getting fat), absconding money (very good at hiding and claiming immunity), striving for world peace (no recent conflicts...), supporting human rights (no more genocide), insulting the US (very good at it), etc. I need to join for my bail out.

  • richard - 15 years ago

Pat. unfair to the british or russian? you come on this site and bag on the usa and then call up 2 other countries? face it in both world wars your country
lost. your military was beaten, typical french, talk s.h.i.t then run and hid behind someone else.

  • conserv.1 - 15 years ago

You mean! Should we bail out the same bunch of perverts who want to teach sex education and masterbation to kindergarten children. The same organization that sponsors global funding for abortion and the biggest con of the century "Global Warming"? I will gladly contribute to get them the hell out of my country. And take Obama and his cronies with them!

  • Brian - 15 years ago

Time for the U.S. to get out of the U.N. and the U.N. to get out of the U.S. Disband it. Kick it out. Outlaw it. However it's done, get rid of them.

  • Steve - 15 years ago

We need the U.S. out of the U.N. and the U.N. off U.S. soil. The U.N. has over-extended their welcome here.

  • pat - 15 years ago

sinmiedo68, that is not fair the Germans did not beat us. At the time France had a bigger army (e.g Tanks, Shipsand and Guns) compared to the USA. We were no push over. It was one commander that failed and it allowed them through. The USA came at the end of both Wars so it is not fair to say that you kicked their butts that is very unfair to all the Russian and British people who sacrifice much more than USA.

  • Obama - 15 years ago

The U.S. has an unlimited money supply and we MUST redistribute our wealth and give to the worlds poor. The only way out of this recession is to spend, spend, spend.

  • Kastler - 15 years ago

Of course not--are they nuts or what?

  • Will Kane - 15 years ago

Instead of bailing out the UN we should bail out of the UN. This corrupt anti-American organization needs to be sent packing. All these years of this organization has not stopped one war and the countries they keep pouring money into are no better off today than when they started.

  • David - 15 years ago

No way in bailing out the UN. We do it enough. It's time that the US bail out OF the UN!

  • sinmiedo68 - 15 years ago

    Hey Pat--
Next time the Germans kicks your butt-- We will not come and save you!!
Just have the UN come and bail you out!

  • Linda - 15 years ago

We should get out of the U.N. and get the U.N. out of our country! It is the most corrupt organization in the world. Dictators and despots are elected to this organization to rule over committees and boards that are in charge of investigating human rights abuses and nuclear proliferation! It is a travesty!

  • sinmiedo68 - 15 years ago

I think that given our dire straits and the fact that we already contribute plenty to the rest of the world, that the UN should help to bail US OUT!!
As a matter of fact moving their headquarters out of the US (maybe to Iran or Palestine (Jerusalem , maybe?) or China -- the new economic giant!; the UN would be doing all of us in the US a favor.
And by the way as the US economy is no longer that robust, we should decrease the amount of fees (dues) we pay to the UN. Let China pick up the tab for a while, they are no longer a developing country!!

  • Pat - 15 years ago

I think the UN would get on much better without the USA, look at the mess they have caused over the last couple of years with their wars that will never end. The USA is broke they are useless now so it would be better to cut them loose. The answers to the questions just show how little Americans know even us French people speak and spell English better than them

  • Patrick R. Connelly - 15 years ago

How about a resounding HELL NO!

  • James - 15 years ago

Not another single nickel (that we don't have) should be spent on World Liberalism. We've fronted these bums for far too long. Let's see if we just can't get them to move along...out of NYC...out of USA.

  • T Possenti - 15 years ago

US out of the UN ....... UN out of the US !!!!!

  • Joseph W. Raines - 15 years ago

The US already pays a major share of the UN support in addition to having to put up with them on a day to day basis in New York. I like the suggestion of moving them to Paris, or Moscow.

An example of their trade assistance, would also be appreciated!!

  • Sam Crouch - 15 years ago

NO MORE BAILOUTS!!!!!!!!!!! Our Gov. is broke . We will never get our debts paid now. The UN is useless.

  • Tom - 15 years ago

Zell Miller said it best - the Unnecessary Niusance

  • Sam Crouch - 15 years ago

NO MORE BAILOUTS!!!!!!!!!!! Our Gov. is broke . We will never get our debts paid now.

  • Pat M - 15 years ago

I have been around and done much instruction for the UN around the world. They do not need any more money. They only need to reel in their salaries and greed. You will be throwing your money away by bailing the UN out; but Americans always have money to throw around - don't you?

  • Gunny - 15 years ago

Arronax, must be from France, the Country that has stuck it up the United States ass since the 1st WW.
I agree with those who said move the U.N. out of the United states and get out of the United Nations. They have screw us too many times. We pay the largest share to the United nations and we don't have that money anymore due to Obama spending like money grows on trees. Look like the trees are dying doesn't it?

  • Joseph N. CA - 15 years ago

Arronax lives in a 4th world country and has his hand out too!
Yes, we give needles to drug addicts, a credit card to the non performing US citizens, medical care to evaders of our country and we provide Nancy P with the Queens life style. Why not continue to pour our hard worked for dollars into the worthless UN.

  • Tom - 15 years ago

Arronax - You're joking right? The UN promoting the US economy and our trade income would likely decrease? Boggles the mind doesn't it folks?

  • Arronax - 15 years ago

Very misleading question. How the hell are you "Bailing" the UN out?
Your paying a % share of the upkeep that many other countries also have to pay.
Sure you can pull out but without the UN promoting your economy your trade income would likely decrease.
Not to mention you will loose all those extradition treatments you love calling in on.

  • Joe - 15 years ago

Not one penny! Not for anything connected with the UN!

  • Sam - 15 years ago

I think the way the question is phrased is misleading. For a start the USA is never expected to bail out the UN it has never happened. The budget comes from a shared pot not just the USA. Secondly, the USA always takes money from other people, for instance the UK only finished paying their loan back from world war two and they are supposed to be strong allies. Imagine what they are like with their enemies.

  • Lee - 15 years ago

Absolutely NOT! I agree with Tom, we need to cancel their lease and move them out of the US!

  • Adam - 15 years ago

United Nations you would think that a united front could pay to have new computer and not have to look that the "rich uncle" to bail them out. I feel that the "rich uncle" might me strapped for a while.

  • Bob - 15 years ago

The US should bail out of the UN. Then the UN should be moved to Paris.

  • Bryan - 15 years ago

Are you kidding me with this question? Not only should we not help the UN with ANYTHING, we should PULL OUT of the UN altogether!!!

  • jenn - 15 years ago

We can't even fix all the problems of our own country-and are bailing out everything under the sun with money that we don't even have-are you kidding by asking if we should bail out the U.N.? What really has the U.N. does for us lately?

  • lorrie - 15 years ago

did the 3% who said yes not understand the question?

  • Tom - 15 years ago

Under no circumstances should we bail out the UN for anything. In fact we need to cancel the lease on the UN Headquarters building and obligate them to request asylum in some other country. Let someone else have the pleasure for a while.
