Did Britain's Gordon Brown Trade the Lockerbie Bomber for Libyan Oil?

Just read more about this here.

The Scottish Parliament inquiry into the release of the Lockerbie bomber is to be closed.

Holyrood's justice committee has been investigating the decision to release Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, who has terminal cancer, on compassionate grounds.

MSPs on the cross-party committee have decided not to take any further evidence, although they will still publish a report, due next year.

Megrahi is the only man convicted for the atrocity, which killed 270 people.

The inquiry has already heard from Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill, who insisted the medical advice surrounding the release which was given had been clear.

What difference does it make. Obama Administration gave the OK. Just make it a low key return. However, the Lybians said, ok, then said fooled you again. He is a hero.

Has anyone stopped to think of the way Obama treated the Brits since he's been in office??? They were wrong to free him and make the deal but I can understand why the Brits may not feel such loyalty to America.

    Obvious "oil whores" !!!!!!!!!!!!!

A comment made by someone from this post of US citizenship whose previous government invaded a country full of oil reserves (Iraq) on the basis of 'Weapons of mass destruction' which neither the UN, Nato, British or American forces have found.

Now to set the facts straight, Scotland has it's OWN devolved parliamentary constitution which limits the authority Gordon Brown has over certain issues in Scotland. Gordon Brown had no authority to release or to keep the bomber as it was a decision by the Scottish Justice Minister and not that of the British Prime Minister, so to think Gordon Brown traded the bomber for oil when the majority of people in the UK were opposed to it and he had no power to decided such a thing is just stupid. Also, though I don't agree with the outcome, I glad we care very little about what the America says about how much of a damage the release is to the concept of 'Democracy' seeing as you don't live up to your own political morals as your previous government imposed state surveillance on those questioning the governments regimes, you previous government extraditing foreign nationals and then keeping them in prison and claiming not to have tortured them (by what that government had defined the term torture to be), causing the death of your own citizens by fighting a war in Iraq because a Dictatorship is apparently seen as wrong (though in certain parts of the world where there is high ethnic and religious clashes, a hard Dictatorship is the solution needed to keep the state in order) and failing to keep international relations steady as the EU and Asia begins to turn it's face on a country that believe nothing more other then right wing political ideologies in how things should be correctly governed.

O and Albaby and Rong, you wouldn't be where you are today if it weren't for us British expanding our empire to America, giving you the language of English which is the language of international business because of the extent of British influence due to the empire, us initiating the war against Germany in World War II whilst America adopted the policy of isolation and watch millions die whilst it gave out loans, riding the wave of devastation of Europe to become a superpower the U.S is now today and us fighting besides your soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Well most Brits and I mean 90% plus are very angry with the release just as you Americans are but I must say that we normally do what the the US Govenment tell us. So I believe it is the Brown / Obama team that released him and conspired so that Scotland took the blame. That's how it's done simple; so remember my US cousins we love you, we fight with you and stand by you all the way to the end and you would be wrong to dismiss your only true friends in the world.

When a animal blows up and thereby kills hundreds of innocent persons, the goverment has an absolute legal and moral duty to make sure that such a dastardly person never sees the light of day again. Instead of this, the British government corrruptly agreed to let this terrorist go, receive a hero's welcome in his homeland, and thereby inspire other Islamic Jihadists to blow more innocent persons, while also betraying families of the victims in an incredible gross miscarriage of justice. How pathetic can the British government be and how low can it go?! We just found out. To top it all out, the tyrant who welcomed the terrorist back and undoubtlly gave the go order for the plane to be destroyed, will now go camping in the USA as a sign of contempt and derision to all American citizens. Where is the American government to prevent this second outrage? Or are they in favor iof rubbing our noses in powerlessness to receive justice from madmen like Ibya's dictator and that bomber murderer? Time to protest vehemently until something is done America!

Just by chance did someone think that if he died in a Scottish jail, then he would be a marter. And heven forbid that the Lybians would suspect the Brits of giving him cancer and yet more ammunition to hate us all. Let him die at home with no medical. Proud British Vet

Hmm, Tari, I see you chose your intellect from the shallow end of the gene pool! The iraq war was not nor has ever been about oil! The United States, to my knowledge hasn't shipped one barrell as of yet. Yes I agree, that we have been there too long, should have left after killing Sadaam and his family, and that the invasion may have been misguided from the beginning! BUT, if you are so out of touch to think that giving this terrorist his freedom is in any form a good thing, then don't be crying when the country and the people he attacks is yours. Also, if you actually do feel about the United States, the way I infer you do from your comments;THEN YOU ARE FREE TO GET THE HELL OUT AND LIVE SOME WHERE ELSE, Iran for instance!

  • Gregc - 15 years ago

Just another head of government following in Obama's footsteps. It has become a grim reality that the people, the every day people in this world mean nothing to the governments who represent them. All that matters to them is power, power, and more power! Humanity and Justice be damned!

From everything I read from Mirror and guardians, the british and the scots are outraged themself. It seems liberals are liberals no matter what country your from, deft, dumb, and blind.
Hopefully they'll do what the german and the french did, elects conservatives.

If everything you read in the news is correct then obviously a deal was made to release the prisoner for oil but but wouldn't be a slick move on Libya's part to make a false statement just the get the reaction we've seen in the US and try to drive a wedge between us and Great Britain. There's still more to this story than we will ever know about.

reply to Albaby and support of the proud Veterans Daughter.

207 British troops have died in Afghanistan. Based on the UK's population a greater proportion than Americans have.

Bin Laden is still alive and in that region.

Show some decency and apologise. Unlikely if you regularly visit a Fox site

The dollar sign is there to tell us what is the real truth. When money talks the truth is always silent as no one will admit any right or wrong doing. We can figure this out without wrecking our brains out.

My mother use to say, " if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, quacks like a duck, it must be a duck." or maybe it is a rat. As a nation we need to think more as President Reagan did. We need to be strong and show our strength. If those in the world choose to do otherwise we should not jump in to save their butts as we have done in the past. Let them reap the benefits of their misjudgments. We must realize that this is a war and treat it as one on all fronts.

"I hope were not asked to shed our childrens blood to save their guttless buns while they sip tea"

Funny, havent the British troops supported ours throughout military history, while saying this you insult those who have given their lives to protect your freedom. Your comment simply sounds like a badly chosen prejudiced ideal.

Another thing, the troops that sacrafice their lives do it for a belief. If you havent done it yourself, you simply dont understand. I only understand it because my father is a proud veteran, and even though he has been retired since the early 90's, I still see the fire of love, and true "hope" for our country.

Since when is an opinion poll the arbiter of truth? Until someone releases/digs out the facts how can any of us purport to know what happened? The only value of this to say that most of us smell a rat.

  • albaby - 15 years ago

The Brits have become a nation of spineless brain dead jellyfish. Won't be too long someone will have to rescue them again. I hope we're not asked to shed our childrens blood to save their gutless butts while they sip tea.

Based on the comments on the Libyan President's son, it sounds like Tony Blair made the deal, and Brown followed through with it.
