Should the Justice Department reopen--and possibly prosecute--cases of alleged mistreatment of terror suspects by CIA interrogators?

    IMHO:

This is potentially the most damaging policy the current administration could pursue with respect to the commitment of current and future CIA operatives and collaborators. Our people will be much less likely to take the risks inherent with their profession if they have to worry about being prosecuted for decisions or policy forced upon them by circumstances in the course of performing their jobs.

Circumspectly, foreign nationals who supply a large portion of intel from their respective areas of the world communities will be extremely reluctant to cooperate with our people in the field if they have no confidence that their collaboration or identities can be protected from prying eyes. They will be afraid for their safety and the safety of their families. This kind of political posturing can only further erode or diminish the world's opinion of our government and it's citizens, not to mention making our citizen's traveling abroad even more vulnerable to injurious actions.

The current administration may be trying to draw some sort of contrast between themselves and the previous government leaders, hoping to soften the critical opinion of other countries, evidenced by our president's reepeated apologies to foreign leaders, but too many will see it as an admission of guilt and a reinforcement of their negative attitudes towards U.S. citizens. In the end, these detractors will remember the reinforcement of perceived guilt rather than any attempt to change anything and will most likely feel further justified in their hostile opinions and actions. It's a lose / lose proposition for all U.S. citizens.

Instead of prosecuting CIA (still blaming Bush), Obama needs to be creating jobs and getting my 401K back to par. We have been kept safe for 8 years now and I commend the CIA for helping to do so.

    I live in a 15% unemployment region.

Let’s just invite all terrorists to the US and make them U.S. citizens. We can also give them free health care. Maybe then they will like us.

As a veteran I am outraged at how the Obama administratation , and that
means Obama no matter how he tries to duck responsibility, has treated
the CIA and their intention to go after the previous administration.

Our policy seems to be aimed at pleasing the very people who are out to
destroy us. It all seems like we are more interested in appeasing our enemies than defeating them. The administration has decided it has to
prove to the world that we are terrible people and now they are going to
change things so all other countries will approve of us. This is out country
and we do not have to apologize to anyone. The only thing I am ashamd of
is the way the current administration seems to want to destroy every good thing thiscountry has stood for. I had doubts about Oboma and his crowd from the beginning but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Now I have no doubt at all and I hope we all wise up before it is too late.

The CIA should be investigating the czars appointed by this administration. Investigating an event that has already been investigated years ago will likely cost taxpayers millions, lead to a take no prisoners policy by the military, destroy the CIA and all intel cooperation with allies, HUGE MISTAKE HUGE

No way! Cheney is 100% right. This is politically motivated and a huge waste of time and money we cannot afford to spend. All of our intelligience agencies did their jobs and kept us safe since 9-11. They did the job we demanded: stop any other terror attack, shut down their network, find them and bring them to justice, kill them if necessary, and use our wrath against ANY country that aided and abetted terrorists. Waterboarding caused these killers of innocents to sing like canaries. We should be giving the CIA an award that we have been safe and sound here in the US.

He has made this country less safe since he has been in office and is bringing our country to it knees with debt. He will bow down to dictators but stick it to the people of this country,

Obama has said the lawyer and administrators who advised the CIA NOT be prosecuted as there is so much that need to be done to address our future and redress American grievances. Still it is the responsibility of Holder to see all aspects of government follow the law. If anyone wants to change the law..fine. But follow the law.

If inappropriate things were done, those who ordered it need to state that they chose to break the law and are perhaps proud of it. If you chose to break the law, even for a good cause, you should acknowledge it, accept the punishment and perhaps try to change the law, not subvert it. That is what it means to be an American.

I don't really care what the motivation was. We can change the law, if indeed we ought, but until that time, we live by the law or get prosecuted. That is the American way.

We need to let the CIA do everything possible to protect us because the terrorists are out to destroy America. We certainly do not have a President that is willing to protect us from the terrorists. He is too busy trying to be their buddy. Obama and his administration are trying to destroy American from within with all their socialist agendas. Americans had better wake up and get their heads out of the sand before American becomes a completely socialistic country. We all need to stand united and fight for our beloved American because a few can't do it alone. Americans need to wake up and pray for God's help to uproot the Obama administration before it takes over our personal lives and tells us what we can and can't do as Americans. Our freedom is at stake. Let's fight for what we believe.

Jefferson-Yes, Conservatives do stand for the rule of law, and the Obama administration has broken many. Since when does the government have the right to fire a ceo of a private company. They are circumventing the law by appointing all of these Czars, and some of them are avowed Communists.

Now, about so-called toture. Water-boarding may sound cruel, but would you rather we cut off their heads, as they have done to our Soldiers, or perhaps cut-off their fingers, before they behead them. This administration is not Socialist, they are out-right Facist. We need to clean out both parties, because they have been working for themselves tooooo long.

  • Bishop - 15 years ago

I have said it before and I say it again! Impeach this ass-h le and start a through cleaning of the Czars! Get Feinstein, Holder, Emmanual, Reid, Rangel, and anyone that can't take a polygraph about their feelings FOR American out of the government! I am a 57 yr old Grandmother and I volunteer to do the interrogations! AND I would have no problems with any method I had to use to make sure that no more innocent American lives are lost to terrorists! I love my country and would/will do anything I have to do to defend it! Obama and company need to be fully investigated! We have things (people) put in place to destroy our wonderful country and Obama is just the head of the snake! I really shouldn't have called him a snake, though I detest snakes, but it's doing snakes a dis-service. I know we can't make impeachment stick just yet...too many Dem's in Congress and the House! But after 2010 Impeach the bast'd and clean out his fellow snakes!

  • Jefferson - 15 years ago

Actually, Obama does not want this done, as it is not politically wise or expedient. But it is in fact necessary. What exactly does "conservative" mean anymore? I thought conservatives were "law and order" people who support the Constitution. The CIA tortured prisoners, broke well-established international laws, and thereby destroyed our American reputation as "the Good Guys" as well as putting all of our military men and women in danger. Torture must be stopped, and punished--all within the law. It's necessary, and it's actually the conservative thing to do--if you want to "conserve" the Constitution, international law, and American lives.

If it is time for your mandated physical, and you don't show. Theywill come to your house, and remove you, You may never be seen or heard from again.
This gives them rights to confiscate all property, moneys, land, and turn it over to one of their militia.
You will only grow in your garden what is mandated by these gestapos, Animals will be rationed, and god forbid if one dies, you will be executed, according to Sunstein and his Guru Peter Singer.

LIBERALS WANT TO CLOSE DOWN ALL THE CONSERVITIVE SHOWS BECAUSE THEY CAN'T GET ANYONE TO LISTEN TO THEM. THEY JUST DON'T GET IT, THEY ARE BORING AND ALL THEY DO IS RANT,RAVE AND CALL NAMES JUST LIKE YOU. EVEN IF THEY MANAGE TO SHUT DOWN THE CONSERVITIVE SHOWS PEOPLE STILL WON''T LISTEN TO THEM BECAUSE THEY EITHER GIVE YOU A HEADACHE, PUT YOU TO SLEEP OR HAVE YOU FRANTICLY SEARCHING FOR YOUR REMOTE CONTRL TO CHANGE THE STATION. IF DO YOU HAVE AN EDUCATION OR ANY INTELLIGENCE YOU ARE DOING A VERY GOOD JOB OF HIDING IT.

Well, here's were its' at people, I, as I have said am a grandmother and if my family is threaten I don't care what care what they do to them if it will protect them. In fact they would have to be sure I didn't get to them first because I'd be that persons worst nifgtmare.

NOW IF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE DOING ALL THIS TALKING ARE SERIOUS YOU NEED TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED. I LIVE ON $719, A MONTH BUT I AM GOING TO BE IN WASHINGTON D.C. WITH THE TEA PARTY GROUP IF I HAVE TO WALK ALL THE WAY. IF YOU DON'T STAND UP NOW, TOMORROW MAY BE TO LATE. IT DOESN'T WHICH PARTY YOU BELONG TO, THE TIME FOR PARTY LOYALTY IS OVER AND THE TIME HAS COME TO LET THEM ALL KNOW THEY WORK FOR US AND WE ARE TAKING OUR COUNTRY AND OUR CONSTITUTION BACK AND IT IS TIME TO SEE THAT ANY SUPRENE COURT JUSTICES THAT DO NOT MAKE THEIR RULINGS STICTLY ADHERING TO THE CONSTTUTION IS IMPEACHED. THEY ARE NOT THERE TO WRITE THE LAW, THEY ARE THERE TO UPHOLD THE CONSTITUTION NOT PASS AND REWRITE IT ACCORDING TO THEIR PARTY LOLALTY AND THE NEWEST JUDGE IS THERE TO OVERRULE ANYTHING WE VOTE FOR. iT IS TIME THAT TERM LIMITS BE PLACED ON BOTH OUR REPRESENITIVES AND THE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES SO THEY AARE NOT IN OFFICE OR ON THE BENCH LONG ENOUGH TO FORM ANOTHER UNDERGROUND GOVERNMENT AS THEY HAVE NOW THAT IS STRIPING US OF ALL OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS.
IF YOU THINK I'M WRONG THEN JUST REMEMBER A FEW YEARS AGO WHEN THAT COURT RULED THAT IS SOMEONE WANTS YOUR HOUSE AND THE GOVERNMENT DECIDES THEY CAN MAKE MORE TAX MONEY FROM THE PEOPLE WHO WANT YOUR HOUSE THEY CAN TAKE IT. TRY AND FIND ANYWHERE IN THE CONSTITUTION WHERE THE GOVERNMENT CAN JUST WALK IN AND TAKE YOUR HOME. IT ISN'T THERE AND THE SEPERATION OF CHURCH IS NOT THERE EITHER. IN FACT IT SAYS JUST THE OPPISITE.

Has anyone read or heard about a bill in the Senate right now that willl if past give Obama the power to shut down the Internet whenever he wants to.

I went to the Social Service offices here in Colorado the other day and picked up an application for Medicaid and foodstamps and in both cases,( while American citizens had to have Social Security numbers, birth, certificates, utilities and on and on) it said if you didn't have this any of these documents do not be afraid to aply as they are not immigration and they wiil not call immigration. This applies not only to illegals' but anyone who enters this country, even on a vistors visa can apply.
When I went into this place there was a line that if straight would been over a block long and I will leave it to you to decide what 85% of that line was made up of. It isn't hard to figure out why the medicaid program is going broke.

Torture??? Do any of you BLEEDING hearts ever think on HOw Americans were treated in all of the wars, starting with the 20th century? When the hell did our enemies ever treat American POWS with the treatment at Gitmo? Seems to me, it is they who need to HONOR POWS human rights, not America. Go read about the Bataan death march, for starters. How about the treatment ofour prisoners during the Korean war? Or how they treated us at the Hanoi Hilton, during Vietnan. What they did to our guys in the Iraq war. Yes we are better than they are and COMPARED to how our POWS were treated, Gitmo was a Sunday School picnic.I hear they want to HANG Chaney for keeping us safe? Should they have CRUCIFIED Truman, then, for unleashing the Atom Bomb?War is hell and unless you have fought in one, Knock it off...The USA NEVER lost a war, until LIBERALS started bleeding hearts, inc. We are the best nation in the world BUT we arent LAMBS. If you attack us, you DESERVE the results. On the other hand, we will HELP you to achieve a better life, if your HONEST with us. Who remembers the Marshall Plan? Our enemies want us DEAD. If these bums, now in power, seek to Enslave us, as I suspect by using our own laws, Let us RISE and kick them out, before they do it to us....In God we trust, which they are trying to destroy, right now.God Bless America

And Mondez where are you getting your data about the polls and the support of the healthcare plan. The Rasmussen poll shows just 34% support for the plan. Obama's approval rating have been going down faster than a Intern in the Clinton White House.

Everytime Obama comes on and says we need to have fundamental changes in how things are done all I can say is this. By us moving away from the fundamentals this country was founded on we have created the problems that we are facing today.

  • Bauer - 15 years ago

I agree with all of you 100%. The only reason obama is doing this is because he's losing the health care bill he wants. I am parying every night that he digs a bigger hole so that we can start impeachment hearings on him. Mike what Joe means is we don't really know where obama is form and so that dosen't make him an american. I say lets open our on investagation in to Obama's past and lets see how he likes that. And No I am not realted to Jack Bauer form 24 (lol).

What is this about innocent people. You do not go to Guantanamo Bay because you were late paying your rent or because you called someone names. People were sent there due to a lot of evidence. The criteria to send someone there was very restrictive in order to vet out a lot of the not as bad guys.

Oh and just so you know wes_ben the KKK was supporter of the democrat party but hey it's not yoru fault the education system failed you. An Cualan yeah eveil republicans invading countries that never signed a peace treaty only a ceasfire and had violated all of the terms to the ceasfire for over a decade and how bout them Dems who invaded countries without being attacked like Clinton with Somalia, Kosovo, Bosnia and how bout that ole JFK and the Vietnam Conflict, but hey facts have no part in this right it is just soem outdated liberal rhetoric that is being used on here.

Enhanced questioning (water boarding) was used on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the information that was gained thwarted an attack on Los Angeles. Quoting the Justice department memo they said “Both KSM and Zubaydah had ‘expressed their belief that the general U.S. population was ‘weak,’ lacked resilience and would be unable to ‘do what was necessary’ to prevent the terrorists from succeeding in their goals,’” said the memo. “Indeed, before the CIA used enhanced techniques in its interrogation of KSM, KSM resisted giving any answers to questions about future attacks, simply noting, ‘Soon, you will know.’”

How bout the roughly 80% recapture rate of detainees that were released from Guantanamo Bay which was even covered by ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN.
you can even reference this congressional report. http://www.pvtr.org/pdf/ICPVTRinNews/House%20of%20Representatives%20-%20GUANTANAMO%20BAY%20DETAINEES.pdf

The ones sent to Guantanamo are the Fundamentalist the top teir ideologs who will be unpersueded to change their minds or sway from their core beliefs. Child molestors and heroin addicts have a better chance of changing their ways then these guys. As luck may have these guys also happen to be the planners, the financiers and the logistics guys who have important information about the inner workings of terrorist cells around the world.

It's not like the CIA got blowjobs from an intern! hey, some of our drones accidentally killed a bunch of their innocent women and children. Big deal, because they're all muslims! Get it? God already hates them. let's ship all the blacks back to africa and bomb the muslim world back into the stone age. Heck, they're 1/2 way there already! Bush started the Iraq war and the blood of so many american, brittish and Iraqi/Afghanistani soldiers and civilians are on his hands. Its funny how you wage war around the world and the last war faught in the states was the civil war. Fair play though, ur all pretty entertaining

No mercy, no mercy at all has been shown to the victims of world wide attacks perpetrated by terrorists! Now is no time to show mercy for them! Obama and his wimpering to the rest of the world only proves that he and his cabinet can only deal from a point of weakness. He doesn't have the strength, the will or the ball to actually stand up for America. The CIA papers should have never been released, the CIA should continue operations as normal, and torture for the criminal terrorists should be increased! So what if some them die; Big Damn deal!!! Sometimes you simply get what you deserve!

  • Mondez - 15 years ago

    G. Taylor every national Poll shows that a majority (some times as much as 67 percent) is in favor or health care reform. What you wrote was either a lie or you're ignorant about the facts that your position is in the MINORITY, not the majority. Just like people who want Obama out is in the MINORITY, reguardless what FOX tries to tell you. You're 33 percent of the population. Obama personal approval ratings are still in the high 50's, some higher. The polls for the way he's handling health care is hammering him though, LOL. But a majority of people still are happy with his OVERALL preformance. READ people. READ and think for yourself. Don't be Beck's Bitch.

  • Mondez - 15 years ago

Oh, and East Texas, some of the detanees DIED from the torture, not all of whom were even proven guilty. You would know that if you actually read the reports instead of getting all your news from O'Reilly and Beck. You can find it online. Also, I hope they go after Cheney himself. He signed off on all these. If not for his bad heart, he should serve time. But disgrace for supporting torture is enough for me.

  • Matt - 15 years ago

What we agreed to with the rest of the international community in 1987, under Ronald Regan:

    Article 1

    1. For the purposes of this Convention, the term "torture" means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in or incidental to lawful sanctions.

    2. This article is without prejudice to any international instrument or national legislation which does or may contain provisions of wider application.

    Article 2

    1. Each State Party shall take effective legislative, administrative, judicial or other measures to prevent acts of torture in any territory under its jurisdiction.

    2. No exceptional circumstances whatsoever, whether a state of war or a threat of war, internal political instability or any other public emergency, may be invoked as a justification of torture.

    3. An order from a superior officer or a public authority may not be invoked as a justification of torture.

    Article 3

    1. No State Party shall expel, return ("refouler") or extradite a person to another State where there are substantial grounds for believing that he would be in danger of being subjected to torture.

    2. For the purpose of determining whether there are such grounds, the competent authorities shall take into account all relevant considerations including, where applicable, the existence in the State concerned of a consistent pattern of gross, flagrant or mass violations of human rights.

    Article 16

    1. Each State Party shall undertake to prevent in any territory under its jurisdiction other acts of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment which do not amount to torture as defined in article I, when such acts are committed by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. In particular, the obligations contained in articles 10, 11, 12 and 13 shall apply with the substitution for references to torture of references to other forms of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

CIA, what you just did was called a herring argument. it's a falicy in deductive argument. Instead of arguing the merits you propose different standards for the discussion AFTER the initial parameters were made. This is an argument made by a person who can NOT argue on the basis of FACTS because that requires correct debating and truth. I may disagree with conservatives but I at least respect them enough to say they am coming together in arms of hate against a preceived enemy, and torture. Sad.

  • Mondez - 15 years ago

East Texas, some of those people were innocent. And if you think that torture is the way to prove we are BETTER than terrorist, then you are intellectually bankrupt. There is NO argument in favor of that that makes it right and by the way, again may I point this out to you because FACTS may scare you, but some of those guys were INNOCENT. Idiot.

  • CIA - 15 years ago

How about we the CIA investigate Eric Holder and his working to release terrorists in past and present positions and during his legal carreer. Or we the CIA investigate the three dozen CZARS that Obama has appointed without being vetted by FBI or Congress. Or we the CIA investigate Jeff Jones, and the Workforce Development Institute that he operates to help write grant applications to get the stimulus money that the Apollo Alliance, which Harry Reid said helped write the Stimulus Bill, which Jeff Jones also is a member of, oh and by the way, Jeff Jones was Co Founder of the Weather Underground with Bill Ayers, which of course both worked with Obama, which we guess is too late to have us investigate that since the Mass Media has already given him a pass and is in the tank to not investigate anything that would actually help this country. Sometimes you get what you want, this time we got Obama and the whole Marxist, Communist, Social Progressive, Loonies. Too many for us to investigate, so make sure to vote them out of office, would ya please.

Oh boo hoo, the guys who paid for, supplied, orchestrated, participated in, and relished the killing of 3000+ innocent lives on one day a few years ago, I do believe many have forgotten, were subjected to mental cruelty of the most vulgar kind. I mean a faked death, a drill running, a gun brandished, your kids will die, horrific, oh boo hoo, the humanity of it all. No blood, no bruises, not even a red mark, really, nothing, mental, that is it, WOW.

It's really scary how so many supposedly Christian people think it's okay to torture and are okay with letting those who did it go away. If you think it's okay to torture I hope you never get captured in an enemy country and tortured. Some of those detainees were innocent, you idiots. Do you even CARE? You people make me sick and I wish you would get the hell out my country and go live in 1930 Germany where you belong. Facists.

It does seem strange that this subject would resurface -when national health (insurance) reform was the topic of the day just 48 hours ago? Could it be those for socialized medicine wish to change the subject - since it is now evident the American people do not want nationalized health (insurance) care? I thought only Republicans were capable of playing politics - is that not what most of the media indicates?

An internal review was conducted and some members were fired and other quit so their internal checks and balances worked. When you are fired in the Intel field you are pretty much done unless you go work for some foreign government and give up all ties to the U.S. which not too many people opt to go do.

You mentioned the affectiveness of enhanced questioning and how it is nto affective and all I did was cite a Justice memo that gave one particular "declassified" instance where it has worked amd was very affective.

But you dont want to stay on the issue at hand. The issue at hand is if the law has been broken not whether these people shoudl have been tortured. As the old saying goes, if you haven't broke the law you have nothing to worry about.

  • Larry - 15 years ago

Those who push this "probe" (read witchhunt) are guilty of HIGH TREASON. They give aid and comfort to our enemies while trying to tear down this nation. They should face charges and the penalties that come from the commission of TREASON.

  • SSG Young - 15 years ago

Yall is a word in common usage much like how in some parts of the U.S. they call water fountain bubblers or in other parts medians are called neutral grounds. So let's nto get caught up in tangents and stick to the topic at hand.

  • SSG Young - 15 years ago

You see people always like to Say oh it never works much like how in the army many people believe that the Chinook is the fastest helicopter in the Army. I know it may seem unrelated but these two are similar because the Chinook is not the fastest helicopter in the Army and enhanced questioning does work but because enough people say the opposite it is taken as fact.

2003 - An officer pulled a pistol on a detainee due to the officer believing that the detainee had knowledge of an imminent ambush on a U.S. unit. The questioning method caused the detainee to divulge the information about the ambush and the attack was thwarted and insurgents were killed and taken into custody. that is just one incident of many.

You can even read the last CIA report that was declassified that so many people got their panties into a bunch over.

Again like I had mentioned before when it comes to information obtained from dictatorships and so forth they use enhanced methods in order to get an individual to take blame for an attack in order to open and close a case. However when you use a these methods for the purpose of thwarting a real attack or in order to capture high value targets that are overseen by medical personnel and a trained interrogator with a questioning plan and the ability to use enhanced methods your chances of getting false information is drastically reduced.

  • Mike - 15 years ago

Joe, Why is Obama not a real American? Is it because he doesnt believe what you do? I may not agree with his policies but that does not make him not an American. We are founded on the fundamental belief of differing opinions. What happened to that?

  • JOE - 15 years ago

OK the joke is over lets get a real american to run this country, not a anti-one.GOD BLESS THE U.S.A. and our military we love you.

  • Mike - 15 years ago

There we can agree on something, I think every politician that has leaked secure information for political gain should be in front of a judge. Same goes for all the politicians on both sides of the isle that have accepts money from healthcare lobbyist or any special interest lobbyist. Votes shouldnt be for sale anymore. No American should put up with it.

  • Mike - 15 years ago

    Dear SSG Young,

Please learn english. But to respond to your rant, I am not a hippie nor a liberal. The military and the CIA have a questioning guidline they are allowd to follow. If you think it should be harsher, get your congressment or senator to push for change. Laws are laws. When you ask why are these things being brought back up? Well could be that the preliminary review found that there was a coverup and now people need to pay if they broke the law.

What will this do for us? It will ensure that our government is not above the law. No American should be above the law, period. If they did something that was against regulation, they should face the consequences.

As for torture working, it has been proven not too. The prisoners will say anything you want to keep from being totured. But back to the original point, it is against the LAW.

Lastly, "Yall" is not a word.

  • SSG Young - 15 years ago

Since we are on the topic of breaking the law how bout we open an investigation on ever last congressman, senator, and bueracrat crony who has leaked classified information or who blatently held a press conference after a classified brief "Harry Reid." There is only one individual who has the ability to declassify information on a whim and that is the president everything else has to go off of pre-established release dates such as 10years for secret information unless it relates to information gained from people or 50years for Top Secret but again that is just the minimum amount of time it should remain classified. So since this administration is on this whole "Obey the Law" kick let's go all out or are we just picking and choosing what law to obey.

  • SSG Young - 15 years ago

This is for you Jeremy Kresner and the rest of th epeople who feel that there should be an investigation. First off the American Red Cross has severed ties with the IRC International Red Cross due to it's money going towards terrorist front groups dating all the way back to the Cold War and such groups as the Red Army. As to what constitutes Torture I would like for someone to show me a clear cut defenition and for yall Clinton lovers let me put it in terms that yall support "It depends on what the defenition of is is." So do we go off of what the people we are fighting constute torture as being or do we go off of what some peace loving hippie who would sell out their own family to shake Al Gore's hand's defenition of Turture. For yall people who buy into the whole "enhanced questioning" rarely gets a detainee to reveal truthful information then may i say that you need to remove your head from your fourth point of contact. Under a Regime style government where they are just looking for a fall guy to blame for some attack I would agree with you. When it comes to trying to get accurate information that will lead to the capture of a high value target or to the prevention of an attack False information serves no purpose so much like you would do to a child to catch them in a lie you would do the same to detainees.

Another thing I do not understand is that hese supposed incidents were already investigated and the people who were deemed as going ot far were punished. Now some politician out to get a bulletin in a resume wants to go back and do it all again which in some way kind of reminds me of double jeapordy but hey since no court was involved in the original punishments I guess we cant use that point. Who will be investigating these events. Will any of them be skilled interrogators who have had real world experience and not just someone who watched a few seasons Law and Order. Will this be the equivelant of a paperboy double checking an electrician's work?

What is the desired intent and what outcome do the people who are bringing this up intend to achieve. Will this make our country safer? No because now captured high level detainees who are already familiar with our basic interrogation techniques because you can google the manual have nothing to worry about except maybe a few nights of limited sleep. Will this imrpove our Intelligence gathering abilities? No, because it is bad enough we are already forced to fight with concrete boots and a arm behind our back and besides how many good interrogators and other Intelligence professionals will we loose because they just don't want to have to worry about being sold out by their own country and would rather go tack some nice coorporate job somewhere. Will this improve how we are seen in the world? No, because it is bad enough we are seen as being weak by those who matter the most, our enemies and this just reaffirms their views. But hey Democrats have always been viewed as being weak when it comes to Intelligence and Military Operations and for those who don't believe me just read up on the Iranian Hostages during the late 70's. Read any number of books and journals on Somalia and the ramifications of withdrawing our troops before accomplishing the mission. How bout those designated no bombing zones during Vietnam despite knowing that there were massive munition stores in those areas.

I now watch this on TV cringing and shaking my head in amazement.

  • Mike - 15 years ago

Amen Joseph, this is not a partisan issue. This is a legal issue and if people were breaking the law, especially higher ups, they should be prosicuted. Leavens, I am with you on whether these low lives should be tortured but that does not give me, you or anyone the right to take the law into their own hands. If we allow this, why have laws?

  • Joseph - 15 years ago

Nothing should excuse someone from breaking the law. Our military and our country has sacrificed too much since 2001.

To allow people to tarnish those sacrifices with potentially illegal actions without later responsibility doesn't seem right.

The ends shouldn't justify the means.

  • Fred - 15 years ago

    Mr. President,

You are giving aid and comfort to our enemies! We are at war! Wait! Isn't that the definition of treason?

  • Irina - 15 years ago

I hate arguing over the internet, because in real life none of you would say anything cause youre all chickenshit, but, laevans, youre an idiot
ohh is that all they did? Were you there?? I bet you werent or you would be pushing for an investigation.

Why dont all of you put the How to be like Glenn Beck for dummies book down and stop talking out of your ass!

  • laevans - 15 years ago

    Pulling out fingernails is torture.
a power drill in the knee caps is torture.
forcing dry rice down a guys throat then forcing him to drink water until he explodes is torture.
peeling a guys skin off is torture.

Keeping a guy awake with loud music, NO!!
pouring water on his face NO
keeping the air conditioner a bit too low..I don't think so

  • Irina - 15 years ago

Man, the hypocrisy on this site is enough to make my head explode, reorganize and explode again. If the roles were reversed, you low lives would be all over your government to investigate. How dare these liberals torture!! Move on??!!! You can tell that to the assholes who are still looking for Obama's birth certificate. We can spend gazillions of dollars on a war which we shouldnt have gotten into the first place, but torture, naaahhhhh.

All of you are self righteous assholes who dont care about anyone else but yourselves.

  • gram - 15 years ago

They're just trying to deflect the public's attention from healthcare.

Also, and this is very important to me because my son is in the Army, opening this up again will just endanger our troops even further. Of course, Obama doesn't give a rat's ass about the military and neither do the rest of those flunkies he has chosen to associate with.

  • laevans - 15 years ago

I was born in the 50's, grew up in the 60's, joined the Army at the earliest beginning of the 70's. Hippies giving out flowers will not stop a war, neither will being nice to someone who WILL KILL an his earliest opportunity. Our Government, hell ANY government does things that are not exactly "legal" to defend it's people and I for one am greattful. Getting personal again.. I will do anything, repeat anything to protect my family and I would expect my government to do the same for me. There are lot more serious crimes going on in Washington that need looking into than pouring water on the face of a dirt eating cave dweller.

  • Joshua - 15 years ago

    laevans,
An interrogator is a cool, collected well trained professional who uses many methods at they're disposal in order to get valuable information. Torture, as stated by senior FBI interrogators does not provide valuable information, period. We may want to tear they're limbs off or waterboard but that is what we do when we want them to say things for propaganda purposes. Just investigate what the Chinese did during the Vietnam war in order to propagate lies.
The real crime here seems to have been purported on the American people and only an investigation will uncover the crimes and who is responsible.

  • laevans - 15 years ago

I would like to appologize for my previous post. I get a little wound up sometimes when I feel passionately about something. I didn't mean to get personal but it sure did come out that way.

  • Mike - 15 years ago

People you can't redirect this back on Obama. He said he didnt want to persue it. If these guys broke the law, they have to face the consequences. Why is this so hard to accept? Forget whether you like the policy or not. The LAW is the LAW. We can't disregard it because these people may or may not have meant well. Reagan administration would have never put up with torture or with members of his cabinet skirting the law to allow it.

  • laevans - 15 years ago

Don’t know you, don’t know where you live and I don’t care. But I would love to hear you scream when they blow up a building or a bridge in your town and kill your family. You will be the first asking how could this happen? Why? Because we didn’t have the information we needed to stop it. And Why didn’t the best intelligence agency in the world get that information? Because the Hollywood crowd said you can’t make a captured terrorist stay up for 24 hours with loud music playing. You call that torture?? I’m sure there is a rock concert playing near a college campus somewhere where staying up all night and listening to loud music is the norm. Is that torture too? Then we must arrest everyone who attends a rock concert. Yes that is a ridiculous statement. Sounds about as riduculous as trying to prosecute the CIA for saving your life.

  • Joshua - 15 years ago

No one is worried about any terrorist. They could all rot in hell as far as I'm concerned. Try and stay focused. The question is, should all honor the laws of this country and those we have signed onto?
Follow the bouncing ball. Are you fearing where it lands?

  • laevans - 15 years ago

Where is my post that I submitted over nine hours ago??? A little too strong for this group maybe? All you whiney little pacifists worried about terrorist rights. You’re the same ones that voted this doofas into office and is ruining our country. These terrorists will cut your head off and use it for a soccer ball and you’re worried about the big bad CIA guy pouring water on his face. You all make me sick!

  • Joshua - 15 years ago

Yeah, that's it Warren. You've got it all summed up.
Be sure to tune in to Glen Beck for more inside information.

  • Warren - 15 years ago

The public school system and all the left wing professors in our Universities are indirectly responsible for electing a Marxist to president.
They are being taught to hate rich people, and told that capitalism is bad.

"THAT" IS THE REASON WE ARE IN THIS MESS !!!!!

  • Joshua - 15 years ago

Hey Spike, when was Cheney ever right about anything?
And George, have you ever seen someone tried for the same crime in this country; ever?
The facts are never addressed by those of you who want to rah-rah your way through life! GET REAL!

  • ldb - 15 years ago

Torture is illegal. Prior to the Cheney directive, the CIA had to follow a directive that said never use information that is provided by any nation or any source that was gained through torture because it is 'unreliable'.

We agreed with other nations 'not' to torture captured combatants and that those who did would be prosecuted under international law.

Accountability for all illegal activity must be investigated and those who ordered and authorized it must be held accountable. Not just the people who followed 'illegal' orders.

  • Spike710 - 15 years ago

Our president needs to stop believing really bad people, like terrorists and those who strive to bring down this country, are worthy of something that will conveniently fit into our high standard of ethics developed over the last few hundred years. And to do this to satisfy our standing in the eyes of the rest of the world, from his viewpoint. We were attacked and will be attacked again, unless we do everything we can. Cheney is right, our president is making things less secure. But that does not matter to this president because his World Legacy is more important to him.

  • Timelord Shepherd - 15 years ago

You can serve your country, stop one 9-11 after another, save lives of those of us in the US and those fighting for our freedom and you are a criminal to the Left. You can take part in voter fraud, sign up illegals and dead people to vote, stop people from voteing if they don't vote the way you want them to, threaten people to keep them from voteing, misuse 1,000,000,000 of tax payers money, lie, cheat, support racism, anti- American, socialist views, attack someone just because that person disagree with you and you are a community organizer.

  • Flareside92 - 15 years ago

I think I may actually run for president in 2012.

  • CW - 15 years ago

If they find that ANYONE is to be prosecuted, Nancy Pelosi should be at the top of the list. Anyone who knew and did nothing is as guilty as someone who carried out enhanced interrogation techniques.

  • Judy - 15 years ago

What a week for Obama, he has his hack AG open up torture hearings to get the media off his health care and all he really had to do was wait a few days until Ted died, he would have had to ruin the CIA. The media will milk this until they put him in the ground. No one will hear anything about government run health care or the destruction of our CIA.

  • Pablo - 15 years ago

You mean like all the tax laws that were broken by people on the obama admin. when they did not pay their taxes. Oh yeah, we love water-boarding in Hawaii.

  • Mike - 15 years ago

If they broke the LAW, they should be prosecuted. Our society brakes down when we make it OK for some to break the law, however good the intention, and not others. I don't want a wild goose chase but, the LAW is the LAW. Every government employee swears an oath to abide by the same laws.

  • Liz - 15 years ago

God almighty, we back stab the people that work day and night to protect us (who have kept us safe these last few years) and hang them out to dry. What the hell is wrong with this country????? No wonder 9-11 happened, we keep crippling the CIA (via the Democrats)

  • Bird33 - 15 years ago

Obama is trying to distract us from his healthcare and cap and trade jokes. Our media is an excellent tool to get what you want.

    We're in big trouble.

  • George McGoff - 15 years ago

Regardless of what your opinions are on the subject of what constitutes 'torture' via our laws, treaties, or conventions, several things are absolutely clear. During the Bush administration, the DOJ issued opinions on these reports. Nothing has changed since then, with the exception of an election, and subsequent falling poll numbers. Make what you will of all that as well, but what is left is an entire group of hard working people, doing what they were told they could/should do by our government (to include clearing legal issues), having been investigated once, and cleared, must now get attorneys to protect themselves from an employer who has turned against them. What this does to the future of the continuing mission of the CIA is likely to show in the lack of intelligence gathering, drop in quality of recruitment, and in the country's security. Seriously, we are the only country on the planet that is this self destructive!!

  • Tex-Bimmer - 15 years ago

I am middle of the road as far as politics is concerned.

First, Obama Does NOT want the investigation, But Holder does. It is absolutely disadvantegeous for the President, politically to have this at this time.

Second, Are we a nation of Laws? If that is true, then there has to be an investigation, and that should lead where ever, if necessary even to the top of Bush Administration. We cannot just NOT HOLD investigations because it is uncompfortable or it is expensive or it is politically NOT correct.

It is throughly disingeneous of people who supported the Clinton-Lewinski, and special prosecutor Starr, and now are opposed to this.

I supported that investigation, and I support this one too.

Our moral compass and our standards ought not change because there is new or different administration.

If you don't like the laws then chage it.
    Remember Mi Li.

HA, that is funny. Yes, foxies are the dullest Crayons in in the Crayola box. Investigate!

  • Andrea Beukenkamp - 15 years ago

    One word......

    YES.

  • Stu - 15 years ago

Yo. Do it. Is it really the case that people who watch Faux Nooze have an average education level of 7th grade?

The CIA violated international law. Let's get back to being able to respect them again. If you don't like laws, you GO THROUGH CONGRESS TO CHANGE THEM. You don't violate them.

OUR CONSTUTIION IS BASED ON SEPARATUION OF POWERS.

  • annie and dennis storrie - 15 years ago

    Well of course.

  • Paul - 15 years ago

LOL, I have no wish to participate in a poll with ignorant FOX watchers.

Everyone who has a clue wants this to happen. Not wanting it to happen is unAmerican--which is waht FOX and all FOX viewers truly are.

  • Ingrid Olsen - 15 years ago

What they did undermined our standing in the world, and at home. We are less safe, and we only can be superior if we have the high ground.

Please do open the cases. Fix it.

  • Uncle Hank - 15 years ago

The majority of Americans--a large mandate--just elected a President because we liked his healtchare plan, which will make insurance affrodable for the 50 million Americans who have no insurance (that's a lot of people,a nd it's bad for the economy!) and because we want government to behave like the CONSTITUTION REQUIRES IT TO BEHAVE.

So, the easy answer is HECK YEAH,.

  • yellowbug - 15 years ago

Absolutely, it should and it must. If I wanted to live in a dictatorial society, I would move to Saudi Arabia. Do the right thing for the AMerican people, Justice Department.

  • DoobieWah - 15 years ago

All of you just shut up. All of you just shut up!!

  • Raechel - 15 years ago

Yep. I only faith in the government that I PAY if they follow the laws. Corruption has no place in my MORAL COMPASS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • eddie in toledo - 15 years ago

Only a TOTAL MORON would say no!

  • WENDY ROMANOFF - 15 years ago

Yes. The gov't must be accountable to the taxpayers. Honesty is key.

  • Quinn - 15 years ago

    Duh, of course it should.

  • Maggie McCreath - 15 years ago

MT Jeff - - Yeah ... I'm sure that is why this poll was clearly labeled "Not a scientific poll" where you cast your vote.

    and

Michael Graschel - - If you are an example of the compassion of the liberal left, then I am glad I consider myself a conservative.

Lastly, the problem with this administration and the aspect of "possible prosecution" is the simple fact that if you set out on a "Witch Hunt", generally you will manage to find a "witch" regardless of whether witches exist or not. Of course, this is just my humble opinion.

  • Rob Nutt - 15 years ago

The one thing I want to know is this. While all of this supposed torture was going on, there were alot Democrats involved in this too. Are they going to be investigated and prosecuted? I feel the way most Americans do on this. These terrorists want one thing and one thing only. They want all Americans dead. I don't give a crap what was done to these people to gather information that has helped save thousands of American lives. Obama and all of his cronies need to stop pointing fingers at the Bush administration and stop acting like they are above everyone and everything. What is happening to this country is SICKENING!
