Who Will You Hire?

The stereotype of the "older, experienced employee who is set in his/her ways" can be extremely damaging to an IT organization. It sets expectations around senior professionals that are extremely inaccurate and can influence companies to pass on top notch candidates.

We have been immersed in a constantly changing and evolving industry for ovre 30 years. Anyone that can't adapt to constant change either jumps ship from IT or gets pigeon-holed before they hit the ten year mark. Anyone in this industry with 10+ years of experience that is/was a primary contributor in their current/former organization has proven their ability to absorb, adapt and excel when new technologies emerge.

It's time to put the stereotype of the older, less adaptable IT employee to rest.

I picked Jane as she is most likely to provide the experience required to guide the development of the software, the relationships with the managers, users, etc. There is no evidence that she doesn't keep up to date with technology and requirements - after all she kept on top at her previous company.

Interestingly you don't even mention whether she has any leadership potential (it may have been supressed in the previious company).

Trevor doesn't have the experience required, and Greg is likely to be too self-centered. He is also most likely to only stay a short time.

    Definately go for Jane.

Ironically, you describe a common name and circumstances (laid off after 23 years), I'd recommend rethinking the idea that Jane would grow tired of the fast paced changes. I'm afraid this line of thinking is the result of stereotyping 20 years of experience... Believe it or not, you can teach a willing dog new tricks.... I'd be more concerned about how much bitterness she's harboring toward the previous company, and how much product loyalty she maintains after 15 years. She's got to be able to make it a new day, and look at the new requirements and new technology with a fresh outlook, excitement and good attitude. (I started my new job this week!)
