What on earth is the point of an online poll such as this week's "Does Helicobacter pylori really cause duodenal ulcers?". Whether it does, or doesn't, is surely not a matter of opinion. Does a large number of votes for a yay or nay make it so? Perhaps readers could be invited to opine on whether or not HIV is a sexually transmitted disease, or whether hypertension should be treated to the point where treatment does more good than harm. I'd love to know if drug addiction is a mental illness - perhaps a poll could enlighten me, although I wonder by what sort of margin I should start to believe the results.
