Do you think federal taxes -- including those on the middle class -- are going higher?

If the U.S. wants to improve the infrastructure, health care and move towards a green economy, I believe that the government needs more money - more taxes. Or things stay the same.

    Steve,

I appreciate your comments. I disagree with your premise but I like the civility you seem to bring to the table.

As a liberal, (what ever a liberal or conservative is) I get very tired of being called everything but an American but Rush Limbaugh, et. al. whenever there is a disagreement on the role of government or keeping the government out of the bed room. For an example, please look at the first comment in this discussion by nbk7ak2.

I am not sure consensus is possible, or frankly even desirable in all cases, but civil discourse is.

So why we disagree, I appreciate your tact.

Americans, including the middle class, should pay higher taxes because the vast majority of them lack the discipline to save their money to pay for healthcare, education, mortgages, and credit card debt. The current system of super-consumerism is set up for most people to fail in this regard. Bloated and broke they are – it's hard to argue with reality. It's not a question of whether Obama is lying about taxes, etc., it has to do with the 1950's mentality that the American system is the best. Really? Just look at any worldwide survey and look at where the U.S. ranks. Obama did not lie about needed "change." People that resist change are stuck in the past and unable to adapt.

Gerry, there's no way to find consensus if you demonize those with whom you disagree. Conservatives (and libertarians like me) don't want lower taxes and less government because we don't care about other people, on the contrary we want this because we value human freedom and believe the lesson if history is that at best a powerful centralized state destroys opporunity and at worst it turns on those it is supposed to serve. Liberals don't agree, fair enough, but that doesn't mean we can't respect one another.

I would personally pay (much) higher taxes if it provides a deeper social net for myself and my children as we age. But then I'm a liberal and care about the welfare of my fellow man. I'm convincede that the conservative mentallity is self centered and in-humane.
Raising taxes for the common good might even potentially relieve business from the "health of their employees" responsibility thereby reducing their costs and prices a bit???

Are you surprised? Obama has continually lied about taxes and many other things. He continues to lie, and is getting a free ride by the liberal media. It is horrifying.
