I think Bettye Fine Collins, Shelie Smoot and the rest of the gang should all resign ! I am a CPA and could straighten this mess out within 6 month for $500K as a county manager. WE have reach all lack of common sense and institutional control. Betty and the group is grasping at straws and have no clue how to run a business, let alone the county. Even though LArry LAnkford is partlyto blame for this also, he is helping the city of Birmingham along the same road. But everyone in the county continues to allow this kind of blind ignorance of these officals to continue.
Your news anchors keep calling the crisis in Jefferson County the "occupational tax crisis." This is not the case, as the people who work, but do not live in Jefferson County and have to pay the tax, can tell you--or really as most people can tell you. And as the judicial system has already told everyone. THE CRISIS IS ONE OF MISMANAGEMENT, CORRUPTION, AND GREED, perhaps not by all of the members of the current commission, but by an accumulation of misdeeds, etc., by former members and certainly mismangement by the current ones. Cuts should be made from the top down, not the bottom up. There are plenty of places to cut costs. Taxing of workers in Jefferson County who live elsewhere is not the answer; bankruptcy is a more equitable option.
The occupational tax is taxation without representation, which is obviously unconstitutional. It is part of what the colonies hated about their motherland. They were taxed by England, but had no representation in Parliament. Remember the Boston Tea Party? Taxation without representation is what it was all about.
