It was 1949, two years out of LaSalle. A buddy who worked at Narragansett Electric was given some type of discount coupon by the company for a 10 or 20 percent discount on a TV if bought at a certain Radio Store in Centerdale. It was a 10 or 12 inch screen as I recall. The cost was around $200 at the time and that was a huge amount of money then. My family and I were popular in the neighborhood for some time as TV's at the time were few and far between. At the time programing was only on a few hours a day and night. Does the name Morey Amsterdam ring a bell. He and some one else whom I can't recall were the forerunners of the Tonight Show.

I lived on the family farm in Rehoboth Mass. and as a 6 year old, my parents would drive over to Pine Street in Rehoboth to see the Channel 11 tower being built. Not a typo because WJAR began as Channel 11. Fortunately my aunt who lived on the farm bought one of the earliest television sets. Until my father decided to buy a television, we would walk over to her house to watch channel 11 and WBZ channel 4. Those were the only stations available.
I recall WJAR was not initially on the air all day. I believe that it came on late in the day and went off the air around 11PM.
I can remember when I was about 8 years old winning a beautiful doll house in a contest that Jay Kroll was hosting. I treasured that doll house for years to come. I am now 57... and still watching channel 10.
After I married and had a daughter we used to get her in the morning and bring her to our bed to watch The Morning Sunrise news with Frank and Art. It wasn't long before she would yell out ART ART when seeing him on TV. Both Art and Frank have sent her signed pictures and Art got to announce her first birthday. A treasured memory..
I remember the big day when Channel 11 became Channel 10. It was touch and go for a while but my parents finally figured out how to switch channels. Channel 10 has been part of life ever since.
My family and I have been turning to 10 since before I was born... I just watched the 60th Anniversary special and I loved all the memories that it brought back. I do miss Doug and hope that Art is going well and was glad to see them prominently mentioned and remembered. I was so disappointed that there was not even a mention of Gary Ley. He was such a long time part of the team that I turned to everynight and thought his was a noticeable omission.
