Are the Future Group's proposals good for Martin County?

With the current state of the economy we do not need to be making changes based on those who feel development is coming back. The economy has changed, the way we generate revenue in the county has changed, and the’build it an they will come’ theory no longer works.

We need to implement a moratorium and truly study where the county stands and what will generate sustainable income. If you look at the number of daily foreclosures and bankruptcies you will see that this county and the US is in dire straights and changing the Comprehensive Plan to the Future Group and other Growth demands is not the answer.

The current state of the economy will be with use for a few years, the worst is not over. We have time to study and react intelligently to the new economy, let’s not jump for the sake of a few. The taxpayer purchases the products, if no one is working or revenues are not meeting expectations, no one is making money and nothing is being bought.

There is a surplus of housing in the county now and there are still un-built homes in developments that were approved in the late 90’s, the county has extended the termination dates of current projects, more means less, the value of your real-estate is worth less with a higher number of surplus houses. The county is projecting future growth using pre-December 2008 data which does not fit the economic data today.

Ask your Commissioners to do their job and responsibly control growth, don’t let the outsiders do their job, they haven’t done the county any good to date. Where are the jobs they stated their growth would bring? Where is the tax revenue they have said their idea would bring?

Read it yourself; (find anything wrong with this document?)

    TITLE:
    TECHNICAL MEMORANDUMS FOR BOARD APPROVAL
REQUESTED BY: Nicki van Vonno, AICP, Growth Management Director
    Item# 804b3d3d Version 1.11 - 7/2/2009 11:36:03 AM

Ask the Martin County Growth Management Department for your own copy…..

If you haven't figured it out the taxpayer will pay the cost of all of this and though the taxpayers tell the commissioners they do not want them to support these changes, the Commissioners ignore the wishes of the taxpayer. Whats wrong with this picture????

Shame on the Future Group for pretending that they have the best interests of Martin County at heart. Mega shame on the County Commissioners who apparently keep forgetting who they represent. My husband and I moved to Martin Co. from Broward Co. 12 years ago and I know I don't have to tell you why. I also don't have to tell you why we didn't even consider Palm Beach Co. Please do NOT turn Martin Co. into the mess that we see in the counties to our south. Extending service boundaries and allowing "clustered" growth will place an undue burden on ALL who live in Martin County. We have an almost rural feel in this county thanks to thoughtful and controlled growth. And those of us who already live here like it that way. Those who would like to join us can choose from a glut of existing homes on the market so the need for further construction out west benefits who? Oh yes the developers. I assure all of the commissioners that if they resist the will of the people of this county I will work diligently to remove each and every one of them from office. You represent the people of this county not the developers. You may forget that but we will not. Do your job. Reject the Future Group's proposal. And do so in the light of day not behind the people's backs. Don't rush into a decision which will impact our county negatively forever. We are watching you!

It has been sad to see the current commission continue to vote against the benefit of the citizens. The example of rampamt developement are so visible in the counties to our south, Most of us cherish the quiet and space that Martin represents. Let us keep it that way for our children
