I could do without deodorant if everybody were to forego this social nicety. No deodorant in a society that appreciates unnatural flowery body smells just won't work.
Deodorants generally do not contain the antiperspirant ingredients than eco-folk object to, such as aluminum salts. I mean, most are not different than dipping a bar of (perfumed or not) soap in baking soda and rubbing it under you arm. Not that local companies don't deserve support, but we should not feel that health-food stores offer the only alternative to aluminum-exposed lymph nodes or a manly funk.
I do not use "deodorants" as such, not the manufactured kind, but I do use things like baking soda and my floral perfume oil on my underarms. Also, I find that hand sanitizing gel makes a good emergency deodorant, by killing the immediate population of bacteria.
I agree with englishprof: if the culture got over its aversion to natural human aromas, I wouldn't mind.
