Before Bush left office, the possibility of fascism arising in the United States was to me very real, though that expired once everything began to wind down very quickly.
What I still see happening is after Obama, the Republicans may still not have reemerged with a rational M.O., but the Christian Conservatives in the country (like Scott Roeder) will begin by and large to become angrier and more militant the longer the Progressives get what they want.
I dont see Islamic fundamentalism posing any real threat to the United States' existence, but I see Christian conservatism picking up their slack. We have a militant Christianity heavily infested in the military, and it is extremely dangerous that they do not share the values they are fighting for (they think they are fighting for something else).
In truth, the path for a great future lies ahead, but it would still be very easy to lose it all. I think there is a now low risk (will rise again after Obama) of the United States becoming something of a Christian Iran.
Or all of the above!
Balkanisation with corporate feudal phalanxes on the east and west coast cities (NY, Washington, Seattle), communist Kalifornia, fundamentalist isolationist Bible Belt,
peacenik utopian Hawaii, anarchist Alaska Free State ....
C'mon: anything and everything WILL happen in the post Oil/Climate/Terrorist/Economic cataclasm.
wait Eric, are you saying that Christians will come back (as in the dark ages) and slaughter all remains on other religions??
i was very confused on which direction you think this world will come to.
We are seeing the future now. Obama is an authoritarian who is moving to secure his own throne without having to use any congressional oversight, nominating Czars (Caesars) to all posts that are most important, and using the official posts as nothing more than window dressing. The rich are somehow cheaters who must be knocked down a peg, unless those rich people contribute to the supreme leader in some way. All the corporations that have value that is either monetary or political will be seized by the government (automotive industry, banks, investment houses, insurance, and the medical industry), and installed with Obama cronies. We will have a nominal, crony capitalism for the elites and a socialist panacea for the proletariat. Welcome to the future!
No, more like a splintering up of America not by nazis, but rather by an awful lot of terrorists!
I'm glad i am old...you young pups who have seen nothing but know everything are in for some interesting cundrums. As for me and my generation we will pass into the light taking with us our wisdom and experiences.
Of course, I think that the religious view point has been completely left out, don't you think? The world will be what ever God wants it to be I am sure. Incidently, I am sure that more than a few of you agree, under Gods rule, some may consider that a dictatorship, one of the best to be sure, but a dictatorship non the less.
Erick you are a idiot and with people thinking like you America will not survive
After the takeover of the corporations and the collapse of the United States government, there will be a fragmenting of the country that will then work its way back to a loose confederation of colonies.
Money talks all the rest walks and that's why I think a corporate feudalism is most likely. You'll have some Elite with money that will use some group of sheepeople as leverage to gain control. Osama is or was rich. He looks around and thinks, hey look at all these crazy fundamentalist. I could use them to become king of the world. They are poor, mistreated, and pissed off. All I have to do is aim them at the current power structure and I could become the boss of everyone. Now he might just be a nut with money but what about someone who's not nuts. Some bright corporate boy looks around and says, Hey I could make more money and gain more power if I ........ well you know the rest. Think the good ol' U.S. of A is different when it comes to sheepeople, think again. Look what happened in Orleans. No government to tell them what to do. Did they organize themselves to create some order out of the chaos? No, they started fighting and looting. They acted like everything you'd think could only happen in some third world country. I was and still am ashamed of how the government and the people of this country acted in that situation. So, that's why I believe that someone or someones with money and the will, will eventually create what they think is a perfect world. And that perfect world isn't going to be some utopia where the little guy gets treated well unless he is willing to serve the new Elite.
In the near future a breakthrough in quantum mechanics paves the way for the creation of a wormhole technology. Using this technology, infinite sources of energy become available, as well as devastating new weapons technology. Those who develop the technology first will be able to escape to all corners of the universe, using the new tech to develop their own, solitary, habitats.
After the initial near destruction of the earth, some of those that escaped will return and contribute to the rebuilding. With no means of controlling the population, and potential for extreme reprisals, governments will have no choice but to work with the people, vs. for or against them.
The united states will gradually become more and more fascist, which is to say that corporate oligarchs will use the instruments of government to continue to strip away our rights and freedoms. Christian conservatives, constitutionalists, and civil libertarians will increasingly be branded by state and corporate media as terrorists along with "islamic" terrorists (not true Islam), neo-Nazis, KKK, white supremacists and other militia hate groups, painting more and more innocent people with the broad brush of "terrorist" or "traitor" or "subversive". Eventually, States will begin to reassert their rights in the face of suspension of posse comitatus, suspension of civil liberties and the Bill of Rights, and direct Federal control of entire cities or states that have been bankrupted by fiscal mismanagement and the global economic crisis. It is possible, unlikely as it sounds today, that a couple states like Texas could secede, while many States renounce the Federal Government (particularly if a North American Union is enacted) while claiming to remain a part of the Union as originally founded. A progressive libertarian movement, with some conservative moral and legal foundations, may sweep the country just when it seems the global capitalist elite have won. But the risk of balkanization, with both enclaves of libertarian progressive freedom and fascist corporate feudalism, is there nevertheless. "Continuity of government" doesn't necessarily mean a Constitutional one or one where "thought crimes" can't get you deported to camps for "reeducation".
Forget what I said. I hope Tophet is right.
I truely believe we will have a communist revolution one of these days. With Obama's reforms (though not entirely socialist, are a step in that direction), and the culminating energy/climate/war-terrorism apocalypse that will soon follow my generation's end, the rapidly growing, restless, proletariat class will overpower the middle class and elite, leading to a communist USA. I also believe that China will occupy the space left by the US, and though they are communist, their rising economy and political sway will eventually lead THEM to capitalism.
Actually the American Indians ( Native American's) won and we are all living happy on the Earth in the natural park settings with government seated in each State Casino with per cap distributed to every resident.
It has always been a game between the have and have not's according to the Bible the have not's will win. "The meek will inherit the Earth."
Of course, nobody knows the answer. But I think reasonable Americans will rise up and realize that punishing the entrepreneurs and talented (maybe rich too) people will not benefit the U.S. It will harm the country and slow down a recovery.
We have the capacity to become a great nation. It is the middle class that has been eroded. Without a strong middle class, our economy doesn't function, because it is that massive consumer buying power that drives it.
We need to start by respecting each other and re establishing the rule of law and the bill of rights. Social programs are not communism. Certain areas such as water, power, education, fire, police, armed forces, health and any area that are common to all should be under government control.
We can have a democracy, but we need to breakup media monopolies, and fund elections with public money. We need to not allow corporations to control the government. We the people and the government should at least regulate the corporations. Corporations are not people and as such they don't always respect humanity.
We need to find common ground and all work together.
