South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford disappeared for a week, then admitted he was having an affair.

He should resign.

It's no big deal.

I think he should resign because the government officials we elect should be role models for the citizens.

He left his job for an entire week. For the average citizen this would be a "no call no show" and we would definitely be fired. As an elected official, he spends tax payers dollars for an international flight in pursuit of an illicit affair. He is not a role model nor is he a loyal employee of the state of South Carolina.

I don't understand how an elected official feels that he should be entitled to hold his position after he committed adultery. When he went down his political path, he knew he would be in the public eye, and be expected to be a role model for his community (and get paid very well for doing so). There are many hard working and morally in tact Americans without jobs these days, and it is a slap in the face to see someone take for granted what they have. I feel he should not have the option to resign, but be ripped out of office and feel what it's like to not have a job.

Sanford's admissions show why politiicans who run on Karl Rove's cultural wedge issues are not to be trusted. Sanford voted to impeach President Bill Clinton on the grounds of restoring "moral legitimacy" to the political office. He ran for governor on the basis of Christian family values. Meanwhile, after he became governor, he oppposed the federal stimulus money for schools and unemployment insurance. These politicians push principles that hurt their own contsitutents under the guise of opposing gay marriage and women's right to choose. Senator John Ensign (R NV), who was carrying on an affair with a campaign staffer while paying her husband and son, suggested that if he were in Idaho Senator Larry Craig's position (after pleading guilty to solicitation of a police officer in a Minnesota airport bathroom) he would resign. He has not resigned his Senate position.

Our illustrious president (Clinton) set the stage so now it must be OK for every politician to do the same. They are a disgrace to America.
