No dog should be banned in any city. It is all how you train them, Pit Bulls are not the only aggressive dogs around. Any dog has the potential to be aggressive and attack at any given time. I think there should be rules for being a dog owner no matter what the bread and if there is any type of animal cruelty then it should be taken care of. Pit Bulls have the highest rank of animal cruelty around and they deserve to be treated and handled with love and compassion along with every other breed of dog.

No dog of any kind should be banned. Any dog can have an agression problem, not just pit bulls. How a dog reacts is how it has been trained by the owner. Unfortunately pit bulls are a desired breed of some less desirable owners and they get a bad reputation because of it. I for one have a family member that has 4 pit bulls and they are the most loving dogs. This bad reputation that is brought to these dogs by what owners do to them has resulted in too many euthanized because people are afraid to adopt them at shelters. There needs to be more positive feedback for these great animals.

I had a pit bull/sharpei for about 8 yrs. and he was the kindest dog and best behaved dog I have ever had in my life. He would never think of attacking or biting anyone. They have a bad rap because of how they are bread. I don't think if they are contained in your yard or the house that people should or this city should ban them as pets. People who breed them for fighting should absolutely NOT have them. But if they are treated with kindness they would be just fine as pets.

thank you

As a member of the Central Falls community and a owner of a pitbull, I have a direct connection to what is happening to these dogs. I feel that all dog owners should have to have insurance and register their dogs. In this city very few dogs are registered and accounted for. The cities need to hold all dog owners responsible for thier pets. When dogs are banned, they do not diasapper.THey are simply shuffled from city to city or are kept inside to 'hide'. These animals are the ones being tramatized. They are victims of descrimination. Pitbulls, with the right training, are caring well behaved dogs. WHen I walk my licenced dogs down the street, they have been confronted by out of control dogs with carless owners. Not one of these dogs has been a pitbull. As a pitbull owner, I am aware of my dogs' strength and am in control of them. These dogs should not be the victims of careless people. Look at the Micheal Vick case. How many of those 'vicious' dogs were actually put down because they were unlovable and violent. One. All dog owners should be held more accountable for their behavior not just pitull owners.

Banning a Specific Breed is the wrong way to go. It's not the breed, it's the owner and/or breeder that should be banned. If you ban the breed those who want vicious dogs will just switch to a different breed and mistreat the dog to get what they want.
Most of the Pit Bulls that belonged to Michael Vick (who was convicted for dog fighting) have been rehabilitated. Not only to being good pets but several as therapy dogs.
Any creature with teeth can bite.
Don't institute discriminatory laws based on breed. You can't institute them base on race, religion or sexual orientation so don't do it to dogs either. It's the individual that's the problem.

Banning a specific breed of dog is not only wrong, it's completely ineffective as far as public safety is concerned. And it's Wrong. Laws should require responsibility on the part of owners of all breeds of dogs. All that happens when cities try breed specific bans is that the responsible owners and their well loved dogs are harmed while the thugs and irresponsible owners go on about their business.

Many people, who have No idea how to care for an animal responsibly and humanely, should not be allowed to have any dog. But legislation promoting responsible pet ownership and humane education are a Whole different story.

I just lost my best friend last week. He was a 14 and a half year old American Pitbull Terrier. As are all good pitbulls, he loved people and didn't have a mean bone in his body. I also have 2 greyhounds and a Staghound; none of my dogs, ever, are allowed to run around loose. I love them too much.

This banning of pitbulls makes me sick. I own two of them a male and a female. They are the best dogs I have ever owned. Smart, loyal, and the love being around people. I bring both of my dogs to the local dog park and niether one of them has ever even growled at another dog. My male is 75 pounds he looks like a big tough dog let me tell you he is the biggest baby there is. I walk him all the time and he has been bitten by 4 dogs. (American bulldog, border collie, a mix breed, and a Lab) and all he does is run away. They are also around nephew whi is 3 and my nience who just turned one every day. Pits are the best dogs out there. But thanks to all these wanna be tough guys who get these dogs just to look tough and dont know how to train them every responisble owner has to pay.
Here are some stats about pitbulls and there temperment vs other breeds
Tested Passed Failed Percent
AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER 665 567 98 85.3%
BOXER 396 331 65 83.6%
GOLDEN RETRIEVER 720 609 111 84.6%
http://www.atts.org/stats4.html ( They have every breed there is and their temperment test on there)
Theres to much to list about how good these dogs are. To everyone out there keep fighting for pits they need all the help they can get

I believe every animal should have a fair chance. If they want to set restrictions/guidelines (mandatory registrations, insurance, leashes, fences, obedience training) then so be it. Let's face it, if these dogs do turn it is serious but I don't think banning an entire breed is the answer.

Pit Bulls are NOT singled out for no reason-they are the Siamese Fighting fish/piranah of dogs. Fine--YOU love your Pit Bull-go develop a Pit Bull community & then the Pit Bull that survives it, rules. I love my family more & care more about the welfare of small neighborhood children than I do about a dog with the bite power of a Mack truck! I am not much for banning things, but I do believe a "family" community should have the right to vote whether or not to allow a very dangerous breed of dog in to their and their children's environment. No individual is allowed to own wolves, bears or wild cats--I put Pit Bulls in this same category. No amount of insurance, etc. will make up for the mauling of a child. Perhaps Pit Bull owners are willing to take that chance, but I believe their neighbors and neighborhoods should also have a choice. Before any banning occurs, there should be a vote. If Pit Bull owners are truly correct about the safety of their breed, then they "should" always win, hands down. What are YOU Pit Bull owners so afraid of that you would deny all others a vote on this matter? I know I am afraid of and do not trust anyone's Pit Bull (due to personal experience) and I am not a fearful person by nature. Plus, I dearly love "most" dogs. I really liked the post about not hearing about a Shar Pei or a Pappillon attacking someone. The mixed breed of Shar Pei and Pit Bull gave me a visual of doggie rape being involved...regardless of the sex of the mother. LOL!

I am glad to see that everyone except one post was against the banning of pitbulls, and as you notice grandma ya ya couldnt even identify her real name..They have to hide behind a mask. My boyfriend and I have 3 America Pitbull Terriers who will win your heart over from the minute you walk through our front door... They get along with anyone and everyone and ESPECIALLY love children. We have a friend who has a 2 year old son and when he comes over he jumps all over them and they lick him and love him to death NOT ONCE have they ever turned and snapped at him or anyone for that matter.. I think that they shouldnt be allow to banned certain breeds by any means..If anyone they should banned the typed of people who own them..There are Chihuahuas that are more vicious in my opinion. There are to many pitbulls being put in shelters or being let go to die. These dogs have feelings to.. How would you like it if someone took you in for 6 months loved you to death or beat you and then sent you away to spend the rest of your life to sit behind a cage listening to tons of other noises all around..Scary huh! Well that is how these guys feel. Its not fair to pick them out of the bunch when they dont do anything wrong but give you 120% love and affection that they believe you deserve...Anyways I think that people need to stop realizing its not the breed that turns bad it the 2 legged monster behind the breed that makes them turn bad...People need to wake up and see..And for all the people for believe the same thing as we do...Great job for sticking up for the breed and taking charge for the ones we love and whom love us...Any problems with what I said..Feel free to email me eferreira712@aol.com
I am not ashamed at all to say how I feel when it comes to these dogs...

I have to agree with everyone (including Grandma YaYa). It is a very tough situation. I have a soft spot in my heart for all animals but I admit that I am afraid of dogs. I have been growled at, chased, snapped at, and lunged at too many times not to be. As a child, my family owned a few dogs and they were wonderful companions. I did have one that was extremely aggressive towards the mail man. We had to ensure that our dog was inside or the poor guy would get attacked. I know that there are many wonderful dogs out there who live their entire lives without hurting a fly! I also know that there are a lot of dogs out there who are generally good but under some circumstances - whether it be illness, fear, annoyance, etc) - can snap and seriously harm someone. Just yesterday, a 10 year old girl was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries caused by a family friend's American Stafforshide Terrier. I'm sure that dog was a wonderful companion to its owner but that little girl's life may never be the same again. I believe that there are too many owners out there who should never be allowed to own any kind of animal. However, I also firmly believe that there are too many good owners who have too much trust in their own pets (those owners who say "don't worry, he loves kids"). He may love your kids but what about the 5 year old he doesn't know who has a habit of screaming and yelling and scares the poor dog who, in his fear, feels to need to protect himself? Or the dog who has fallen ill and doesn't want to be approached, only he can't say that in words so he let's your grandchild know with a bite. Dogs with bad owners aren't the only ones that attack. This is such a difficult situation for whoever has the make the final decision. I know how animals can become a part of your family and I hate that a community has to go through this. If I had children I know that I would fear for their safety. Not because I'm an animal hater, just because I know what can happen. On the other hand, I would hate to see people having to give up a family member. Like I said, TOUGH situation. In the end, I think it should be a community vote. Everyone has to live there so everyone should have a say. I would also like to say that people shouldn't hate all dogs because of the ones who have been agressive...and people shouldn't hate people who are afraid of and dislike dogs because they most likely have a good reason (even if their feelings are a little extreme).

The current tide against Pitbulls is the result of bias sensationalized irresponsible journalism. Recently in the State of Michigan a man was mauled to death by three dogs. The headline read: "Local man found dead in trailer". The smaller bi-line read: "mauled to death by three dogs". Instantly I knew the dogs were not PitBulls. Had it been Pitbulls the story would have appeared on the front page and the headline would have read: "Pitbulls Kill Local Man". Then the article would have focused on Pitbulls and how they account for a large percent of maulings. There would be no mention of the fact that they are the most popular breed in the history of the United States. That they out number every other breed by far and as such, of course they are going to account for more. Never do they mention that they are proven time and again to be one of the best tempered dog.
