Usually take the dust cover off whilst I read the book, then return it to its rightful and useless position after finsihing it and placing it in its most auspicious position amidst the other books on my shelf. Had to talk flashy cause while I do leave the dustcover on the book while it is on the shelf, they really serve no purpose other than cheapening the production cost of not have to print the flashy cover on the actual book.
It depends. If the book is really ugly, I'll leave it on for who knows how long. If it's not ugly, I'll probably leave it on for a while, just so I feel like I have protected it for a time. But usually I will just pitch it.
I cover my dust jackets with a plastic film just like the libraries use (brodart). It keeps my commentaries from getting all banged up.
