As with essentially any subject, there are positives and negatives. I lived in "tobacco country" in Central Kentucky, and saw the squelching of many, many alternatives for tobacco use because it was not cost effective. I saw organic tobacco grown, tobacco used for pesticide, even tobacco derivatives for a dessert topping! Bottom line, it can be used for other than smoking or dipping, but the cost-effectiveness and educating the grower to a better way of farming is the key.
