Why do you buy local produce?

It is such a pity that the supermarkets have taken over. I grew up on the edge of the New Forest at Highcliffe , a little village then, and my father always got a lot of produce locally as he knew most of the farmers in the Forest through his job. The village shops sold mostly local food. I cant believe how much has changed and just hope that people will support local produce. In the long run they must as the present way of life is unsustainable; The trouble is that most of the people moving into the area are from London and are used to only shopping at supermarkets.
Lets hope the new initiatives from New Forest Marque , Transitions etc.
    will be very successful.
    Best regards from Marion.

As a farmer and producer, living in the Forest most of my life, I find it disturbing that in my lifetime the active farming community has dwindled to an alarmingly low level, of course there are still many smallholders making use of their 'commoners rights' and producing products that can be sold locally, but without the support of our local communities, residents and business the future of these foresters look bleak.
I congratulate Forest Marquee and Forest Friendly Farming and other bodies that are successfully promoting local produce, but this is only a start, we desperately need the entire community to support our local producers or else we will lose them.
