To me the confederate flag is is NO way racism. The flag is a part of southern culture, to blacks and whites. It stands for southern pride. It has nothing to do with slavery or racism in society today. The south was done many wrongs by the north before if you go and study history. Everyone seems to wrongfully want it to stand for support of slavery alone which it DOES NOT. The south went to war with the north over many issues and of which slavery was just one of the issues, but somehow that is not popular, but it is in our history, many issues other than slavery contributed to the war and the death of many southern men, defending the south from oppression from the north. I wish everyone would read the book, "THE REAL LINCON". I took an American history class last year at CVCC in Phenix City, Ala. And the book is wonderful!!
when we went to war with the north Lincoln and his wife still had slaves ,also at time there was talk from lincon that if we didn't go to war slavery wouldn't be an issues that the south could keep them.as i said before as long as everthing a white person does that a black don't like is seen as racism there
always will racism and that what made me one today .
IF I were to ever break the law in the city of Auburn, I had better have
permission to APOLOGIZE, and not have to pay a fine, or go to jail.
The city is setting a bad precedence with this action.

Auburn City Councilman Arthur Dowdell committed the same unlawful act as if he took flowers or any other monument from a grave site. He has no respect for the law or the dead.
People have forgotten, or don't want to know that the Civil War wasn't about slavery, but was about TAXES! MONEY! Slavery, while very wrong, is/was used as a propaganda tool. Its time for people to grow up, and move on.
i just watch it.that 's not good enough.if he want's us to except his apology he would have to say he did wrong ,he didn't said that. also he got away with stealing from someone. we have 2 sets of laws in this country now one for the black race and one for the white race.
The issue here is not racsim. For me, it is that You have an Elected City Councilman who broke the law and he gets away with it. What woud have happened if the shoe was on the other foot? Would we have the NAACP down here hosting strikes? Yes, we would even though he did wrong. What happened to our elected city councilman upholding the law and setting an example? What kind of example is he setting for his kids? He knew what he was doing. He knew it was wrong. I do not think a city wide ordinance should be passed on what you can and cannot place on graves. I do not want anyone telling me what or how to honor my grandfather. If I want to place a flag on his grave then I should have that right. After all I paid for that lot! I think HE NEEDS TO BE REMOVED FROM HIS OFFICE AND CHARGES NEED TO BE PLACED AGAINST HIM. HE BROKE THE LAW!!!! So, City of Auburn next time I break the law can I get away with an apology?
His apology is more than enough. It is so sad to see how people have such a hard time understanding where he is coming from. To the rest of the world, the confederate flag represents racism and HATE. I understand why people feel that it just represents the south, but it is like someone flying a flag with a swastika on it. Until the Nazis used this symbol, the swastika was used by many cultures throughout the past 3,000 years to represent life, sun, power, strength, and good luck. Would it be okay to fly the swastika and claim it was just a sign of good luck now, and completely deny the fact that it is hurtful to Jewish people? If you answered yes to this, then fine, fly the confederate flag. Just keep in mind that what it means to you and what it means to other people are different, no matter what the original intention of the flag was.
I hope they make it a law that EVERYONE gets respect at a cemetery, and ban the flag.
i don't think the apology is enough at all. if it had been a regular citizen that took the flags, they would have been arrested for theft. why can't he be treated as such. if he gets away with it, it just tells the rest of the thiefs that they can steal & get away with it. mr. dowdell should be punished just like any other person that steals.
Mr. Dowdell has surely shown his ignorance of the facts in believing that the Stars and Bars is a racist symbol. If he had studied American History and knew the facts about the Flag, he would be proud of it as the rest of us. We fly the Flag to honor the brave men who fought under it. Hurrah for Dixieland.
