I would never live in a downtown city setting. Kids need to be able to roam without worrying about some freak or drug dealer pushing on them or their mom having to look over their shoulder every min. of the day. We have a large yard and miles of hike and bike trails in our suburb. but we would gladly trade it all in for 50-150ac. of private property.
If you live in a small space, then send the kids outside! And I think that your concerns about crime in cities are greatly exaggerated.
