Gave 'em to my kids. Worst idea EVER. For them, nothing occurs before the damn phone - texting/talking takes more of their time than school work, chores, activities. We've got a family plan but I'm seriously considering canceling it.

I got my kids cellphones around Christmas of 2008, which would mean my son was 13 and daughter 12. I had held off on them despite their carping that "EVERYONE has one except me." Of course they wanted iPhones, but I think it's poor stewardship to hand a teen or pre-teen a $200 or $300 phone - what stupidity.

So why did I get them? Because it was getting to the point where they were getting involved in school activities and spending time at friends' houses, and we were unable to reach them when we needed to. The cellphones (provided they have them with them and powered up) help greatly in coordinating these kinds of things.

So when is a kid old enough? I would say either 1) when YOU as a parent believe that it is safer and more convenient for them to have one or 2) they are old enough to pay for the thing, including monthly costs.

If they want the phone "just because," then let them pay for it. Otherwise, no need for the extra cost unless YOU say it is needed.

I wonder how many of your readers are aware that cellphones emit electromagnetic radiation and with childrens brains still growing, cellphones may cause them harm. Scientific opinion (including the World Health Organisation) stresses caution in the use of cellphones with children because of this. There is massive amounts of scientific and research evidence already to show the dangers of Electromagnetic radiation : http://powerwatch.org.uk/science/studies.asp, so therefore I would state to any parent considering a cellphone for their child to read about EMR and if they do purchase a cellphone for their child to advocate the use of hands free sets which help reduce the radiation emitted to the head/brain.

If you check with your cellphone company they will give you the barest of details and state that the emissions from the handset are within government and WHO limits - so they are safe, yet evidence abounds concerning EMR from cellphones and its dangers.

It is no surprise that cellphone companies will not emphasise the same caution that Scientists advocate since their business model is selling cellphones and voice minutes. Parents think about the issue.
