Facebook is not Twitter. Go to twitter if you want to be an open book!
I am on Twitter and appreciate its openness. That makes it very useful for a lot of things, like when attending a conference and using a hashtag.
But some things benefit from being more closed. Facebook serves that purpose well. Just like I wouldn't want someone to be able to access too much data about my email, Facebook is valuable to me because it is my social network, rather than simply another public outlet.
