I totally agree with ivan, the ones who need to present their portfolio should be able to stand-out from the rest. therefore i think it would be more useful to have a life stream styled blog from SM.

So, if not all designers are good developers, then maybe a good framework theme? I mean a theme which a designer with little php skills can customize and show his own creativity?

I agree with Ivan, if theme is created and distributed for free, then a lot of designers/photographers or whomever uses will have it, it'll become repetitive and will lose its uniqueness. At the same time, I agree with Rachel, not all designers are good developers.

The portfolio them, which I voted for and concur somewhat with Ivan, The theme I have in mind is something that integrates with Gallery (which allows you to upload pretty much any type of image file or video). I'm thinking more along the lines of something like F8 but this theme pulls from your gallery install. Allows you to specify an album, or a select set of items. You be fun and can be used for almost anything and you don't have to be a designer or photographer to appreciate something like this.

I think that we need a simple typographic blog theme.

Premium-like themes are nice, but they often offer too much visual clutter and magazine styled content presentation.

The Smashing Magazine design is simple, yet effective. It focuses on the content with simple typography and an ordinary blog design. Very few premium-like themes offer such a style.

Thanks for taking the time to read my thoughts!

BTW, Ivan in that case they should do nothing... Because everything they're gonna do here will, obviously, look good and will be known by many people.... Many people will use it and, by your words, you wouldn't "trust" - and therefore - wouldn't give the right value for it.

IMHO, I think that whatever we select for the site theme, the truth is that you'll learn how to do it, and learn new techniques, right?

    Always cool :)

Just because somebody is a good creative designer or photographer does not mean that they are a good developer and therefore the Portfolio theme is a good idea - if they are a good creative and at least have a good head full of common sense then they will understand how they can at least modify/edit the graphic files to look more personal to them or their work.

I think that asking for a portfolio theme it is wrong, cause only designers/photographers needs an online portfolio to show. And if this free portfolio theme is as popular as Smashing Magazine is, many designers will have a similar portfolio.
So, would you trust in a "creative" designer/photographer who shows you a site you saw yersterday?
