Can the Divide in Environmental Discourse Be Healed

Fairness and reason are not the standard for most commercial (TV, radio or the Internet) commentary, ratings are. It is unfortunate that little of what we read or hear is truthful commentary. Everyone has a monetary or political agenda. Too often the "holier than though" outrage has nothing to do with the issues.

Everone can produce an example of a stuation to support their argument but what is needed is in-depth analysis that gives a glimpse of the larger picture. Then put their argument to the test.

But what is funny in all this, is our expectation that the news reporters are obligated to tell the truth. They, the reporters and editors, work for a publisher whose has an agenda and the reader or listener needs to recognize that. It is as true today as it was in the 19th century when big business ran newspapers to promote their own interests. So in the end each of us endorses
the reporting that reflects our personal point of view regardless of the truth.

We must make it clear that going green is in everybodies interest! Conservatives get energy-independence and healthier and more prosperous America, and Liberals get a green, enjoyable country! Everybody wins!

    No....
We have done such a good job of politicizing something that has nothing to do with politics that the road to understanding has been completely lost.

I think that conservatives enjoy laughing at anything that is the opposite of politically correct (which is what these GOP pundits like Limbaugh and O'Reilly have made their careers on), but when they seriously stop to think I doubt that any of them (at least the intelligent ones) really hold the position that "pollution rocks!" or "I love it when another endangered species dies!"

Someday they will get serious and stop voting on the basis of who will give them the most tax breaks. This is how I see it in my delusions.
