How much should the tooth fairy leave per tooth these days?

I often got a quarter, and a note saying mom or dad would take me to the store for a special treat. That meant the children's bookstore, and a new book of my choice. I got books for "prizes" for a number of things as a kid, and it really fostered a love of reading. MUCH better reward than ice cream or something.

I say tell him the $5 was for losing his very first baby tooth. Then tell him the TF usually leaves a quarter (or dollar or whatever) per tooth after that until the very last tooth, and if he's kept all his TF money then he gets a special surprise after he loses the very last tooth.

We leave $1 a tooth in general. Our oldest daughter had to have some baby teeth pulled by the dentist (pre-orthodontia nightmare) and it was very traumatic. Those teeth got $20 each. It was about the only way we could get her to submit to the extractions! And as a physician I should know this, but did you know baby teeth have giant roots just like adult teeth? If they are pulled ahead of time, they are enormous. It is only the permanent teeth pushing them out that resorbs the roots when they fall out naturally.

I say 50 cents....and to get him into the habit of saving, tell him if he puts it in his piggy bank...it will 'grow' to $1 by the time his next tooth comes out. (you would obviously have to put an additional 50 cents in there.

In Australia we would leave a gold coin - that would be a $1 or $2 coin (AUD) in USD that is equivalent to 70c or $1.40.

I said 25ยข. He's got 20 deciduous teeth, right? that's $5. If he wants more, let him haul coal, shoe horses, blow glass or build web sites. You don't want him to end up doing credit default swaps or hedge funding.
