Woot, Friend just told me Becanic has taken a post as Assistant Coach with Seattle. Could prove to be an even MORE interesting year..

My prayers were answered!!!! Our team needed discipline and tough love. Our boys have the talent but they need to be accountable. They have plenty of friends but a coach needs to be a coach. Go Silvertips

It's about time. Not a big fan of Becanic. Was disappointed with how last season started off, and expected the same this year. Managers and Head Coaches are the guys the players should hate. You want a friend, you have an Assistant Coach and a team doctor. To watch a coach keep his color behind the bench and just stand there, doesnt do much for the fans or players. Constantines face matched his hair for every game and every period. You need a voice on that bench, and it should be the guy in charge. We need a coach that will make players ride the bus back from Tri City in full sweaty gear for lack of effort. Put Savage in his place when he's being a turd. Becanic would do good in a league like rookie sports where everyone plays and everyone wins and there's no outs. We need a Head Coach that strikes fear into the hearts of the kids. They were afraid of Constantine. The mention of his name made the players wet thier pants. That's what we need again. That's your measuring stick.

It's a tough break for John. He stepped in and provided stability when the organization was blindsided by the sudden departure of Keven Constantine. His first year as Head Coach was tough as he had to try to make the transition from "good cop" as the Associate Head Coach, to "bad cop" being the Head man. That is a difficult thing to do with a group you've been working with a while already. It's always easier to relax authority than it is to tighten it. Add to that John's amiable personality which naturally leans to the "nice guy" side.
That being said, the team did appear at times inconsistant. Inconsistance in results is bound to happen throughout a long season due to things, like unlucky bounces or bad officiating, but inconsistancey in effort is something the coach has to be on top of, and being the nice guy John is, he might not have dealt with "effort challenges" as forcefully as a Head Coach needs to.
However, we mustn't forget what he had to work through this season. The first big blow was the non-return of our "Euros" who were both expected to play major roles this season. There was the non-return of one of the toughest kids ever to play for Everett, and also their Captain from last year, Jonathon Harty. Disicipline problems with a couple veterans of the team during preseason resulted in very little contribution on the ice from either. Then the tragic death of JM. How much did that contribute to the poor 2nd half? Then add a number of injuries that cause shuffling of the lines for most of the 2nd half of the season. Kids would be getting new line-mates practically weekly. How can one expect strong unified play with all the shuffling going on? Remember the improvement when the K-line finally got back together for a few games at the end of the season? And through it all, John still guided the team to a better record than originally expected.
I hope the Tips find a good fit for their 3rd Head Coach, and I and many others, wish John Becanic great things in his next coaching gig. I have a feeling that with his caring attitude, hockey knowlege, and experience gained here, he'll make a heck of a coach for the next team that gives him a shot!
