I have installed an Ingrid wireless security system. It's advantages are that it uses you Internet connection to connect to the survailence center (I don't use a home phone) and all of the components communicate with each other wirelessly (easy to install myself). They provide security and fire protection, and no contract. I highly recomend this system.

Why don't people just purchase guns? No I'm just kidding but seriously why do so many think it makes you safer owning them. Because it doesn't, looking at countries that don't even have police officers carrying guns. They are a lot safer.

  • Dave the Alarm Guy - 15 years ago

Interesting to read these posts- including the guy that says "most of these systems are trivial to break into". I'd love to see someone try to break into my house and dismantle my alarm. I'll even tell you where the control panel is, show you where the Demark is located prior to breaking in, and I will bet you the cops will be there before you are walking out. The more reputable central stations are not sweatshops- they are trusted by Dept. of Homeland Security and other Government agencies. I always get a kick out of someone who doesnt know what they are talking about. (Usually) those alarm.com's and the like are not the best but, will still work.
Long story short- security systems give you peace of mind, act as a deterrant, and (if designed properly) will not be easily dismantled. Take it from a professional security consultant!

I use SimpliSafe. Great product, great service, great value... and my dog is just too darn old :)

  • Scott - 15 years ago

I use Brinks. Just got it installed about 2 months ago, for MUCH cheaper than i expected (around $300). That includes coverage for all my doors, glass break sensors for the most likely point of break in into my house, and a monitored smoke detector. I hate that I have a 3 year contract, but i spent an entire year with the intention of installing a DIY system, which i never did. More than anything, it just offers some peace of mind. especially because i know it works; i accidentally set it off, and didn't deactivate it properly, and didn't hear my phone ringing, and found out I didn't deactivate it properly until about 5 - 10 minutes later when the cops showed up...

  • SteveF - 15 years ago

I use SimpliSafe. No phone line or router needed. Completely wireless to the dispatch center. Very satisfied as it is half the price of ADT & Brinks.

  • Rich Green - 15 years ago

I use Protection One. They are great and no phone line needed - all control via web - highly recommend

I use ZoneMinder, a DIY linux solution:
    http://www.zoneminder.com/

    From the web page:
ZoneMinder the top Linux video camera security and surveillance solution. ZoneMinder is intended for use in single or multi-camera video security applications, including commercial or home CCTV, theft prevention and child, family member or home monitoring and other domestic care scenarios such as nanny cam installations. It supports capture, analysis, recording, and monitoring of video data coming from one or more video or network cameras attached to a Linux system. ZoneMinder also support web and semi-automatic control of Pan/Tilt/Zoom cameras using a variety of protocols. It is suitable for use as a DIY home video security system and for commercial or professional video security and surveillance. It can also be integrated into a home automation system via X.10 or other protocols. If you're looking for a low cost CCTV system or a more flexible alternative to cheap DVR systems then why not give ZoneMinder a try?

Just get a sign off eBay for a security system. The real things aren't effective--they just cost money and make you believe you are more secure. The call centers are low-wage sweatshops, most local police departments don't care about alarms anymore (except as a mechanism to charge a fine and generate revenue), and nearly all residental systems are trivial to bypass.

If you get one installed, ask them what security measures they put on the unlocked, clearly marked telephone demarc box on the exterior of your residence?

I live in Mexico where the available optons are very limited. I used to have ADT in my previous home. It was ok, as once two guys broke in when we were out and they left because the alarm was activated.

Now, I bought a huge house in a nice neighborhood, and ADT is not enough, because I need PTZ cameras and sensors working seamlessly in a system integrating everything that can be fully controlled by internet and through a cell phone. ADT does not do that down here.
I think the best option is a DIY, but haven't found the ideal system. Was considering X-10 as it seems having almost everything at an affordable price.

The ideal for me is something that can handle the cameras, the security sensors, telephone, intercomunication and lighting in one system. I don't know if there is such thing in Mexico, almost sure it is not, as I only have found the big chunks to make the whole system, but they do not work together. I lost the name of a "brain" system made in England that can handle everything and is quite flexible in the sense that it that can integrate, the X-10 system and let's say panasonic or sony telephones. For example, the system can call to your cell phone when someone is ringing at your doorfront, then you answer from your cell phone and the guy outside will be shocked thinking that you are in the house, when you really are miles away. You can even see the guy through the camera at your front door.

You in the USA should have something like that, any clue?

  • Redlikemethodz - 15 years ago

Used to have CPI. Now I use Alarm.com through Frontpointsecurity.com and love it. Installed the system myself. They offer a 1 year contract. They let you add your own additional modules which most services don't. Their kits are completely cellular. You can cut every line to the house and the security system will still work. You can monitor and control their systems online and on mobile devices. you can setup a wide array of email/txt msg notices and alerts. Very happy with the service and support!!!

Doors and locks with keys. Old school, baby! :D

  • Jordan Press - 15 years ago

Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm. I'm not even a red state kind of guy, I have a phone to call the police, and a gun to protect myself. Most of those subscription services are as good as the sign that they put in your front yard (Which I also have by the way.)

  • RonV - 15 years ago

I use nextalarm.com. I was a ADT subscriber after SecurityLink from Ameritech was bought out. But every quater my rates kept getting higher for the same level of server. I canned them last year.

I reprogrammed my own system with nextalarm's help and I am back in business. Yea the "deals" that most of the mainstream companies are just the "bait and switch" to get you upgrade.

  • Greg - 15 years ago

I use a local company in SLC called Armed Alert. I am extremely satisfied. I have my fire alarms and CO detectors hardwired to it. I pay $25 month.

  • Tom W. - 15 years ago

My security system is living in a peaceful neigborhood and having a friendly dog with a scary bark. So far out of the dozen or so times in nine years I have left my garage door open while at work, nothing has ever happened except neighbors calling me offering to close it.

  • skatermbsd - 15 years ago

I use a moat and draw bridge system, along with two gun turrets and 4 attack canines!

  • Chuck - 15 years ago

Omg NCBob... You wrote exactly what I was going to post...
    DIY Kit = Mossberg 500A and S&W 686 .357 mag
Oh yeah, and my rottie... but i think i protect her most the time

  • Jman - 15 years ago

ADT basically scammed me into a 3 year contract and had rude teenagers come to my house to install a system that was inferior to what they promised. I'm forced to use them, or spend more in legal fees to fight the contract, or I would switch.

    DO NOT USE ADT.

  • KCMO - 15 years ago

I am happy w/ ADT, although the 3 year contract sucks. I don't have a land line, so mine is connected to some sort of cell box w/ a battery backup in the basement, works really well. No motion detector due to dogs, but have a glass break sensor.
    ... and I also have a Springfield .45 ACP and a 12-gauge :)

  • Ric - 15 years ago

The bear in the woods theory. You and I are in the woods...I don't have to run faster than the bear....just you! Look around you. All the houses have motion lights, a dog and alarm stickers? Then you are the sucker if you have less.

My neighborhood no one has alarms or seems to lock the doors. We have motion lights, good locks, and a dog. The neighbors are clearly easier targets than we are....

Remember criminals are lazy and want EASY!!!

  • IN_joe - 15 years ago

like NC Bob said, mine is a 1911 style 45acp and an AK47 with a dog as back up for when I am gone.

  • NCBob - 15 years ago

    It's a Mossberg 500 and a 357 magnum :)
