Doc probably did one of the better D1 coaching jobs in the country this past season, considering the comparative lack of collective Husker team talent, and the total lack of offensive fire-power. But how come the Huskers have so little talent, on a Big 12 scale? Isn't that Doc's fault by now?
Two reasons: First, yeah it's at least partly Doc's fault the Huskers had so little talent this year. They've never had the talent of any current Top 20 programs, and certainly not in the last 15+ years! So recruiting is no "piece of cake", like at N. Carolina, Kansas, even Texas, etc. In fact, why would talent come here? Well, there are certainly a number of D1 schools that have stepped it up in the last 5 or 10 years, why not the Huskers! Look at UAB, etc.
By Doc's own admisssion, his biggest coaching fault was (poor) recruiting his first two years. Can't argue that one! But if he can move up the recruiting ladder, I certainly have confidence in his coaching skills.
