It is time to make manufacturer responsible, not matter what they make
    - If they manufacture drywall, then they need to take back some & reuse
    - If they make soap, then they need to take back containers & reuse
Nothing new here - The "Milkman" had it right!

Companies that insist on using non-post consumer recycled packaging as well as harmful or non recyclable materials should have to pay the tax for putting it into our environment. As much as we like to put the responsibility on the consumer to recycle packaging, it is almost impossible to recycle most of it. I feel like i am as conscious as i can be and yet things are still wastefully packaged, to the point where i feel we can never keep up. It is especially important that the large companies get hit by this because for some people it is their only option to buy in bulk or buy less conscious brands, it is all they can afford. Yet it seems like we expect the people to know better and "do their part", but let the corporations continue to put it on the people of the world. People as a whole are not as conscious as they need to be so they sheep herders need to help out a little more.

What about increasing the number of facilities that turn trash into energy like in the Vancouver area?

I think there also needs to be a great deal of pressure put on companies to reduce packaging. I see some stuff that is double and even triple wrapped for no apparent reason. Taxing may be the only way to do this, but you know that will just be passed onto the consumer - that works fine if there is a less packaged option, but not if there isn't.

Composting programs need to be implemented and people need to be educated on them for kitchen waste. Packaging that is not recyleable should just not be allowed.

Buy bulk from the bulk bins (reuse your bags or bring containers), grow your own, get meat packaged in butchers wrap instead of styrofoam trays. There are literally hundreds of ways to reduce your waste.

Oh, and just don't buy the stuff that is single use wrapped or in non-recycleable containers.

I think the best way is to increase the cost of processing trash. Companies that operates land fills should be levied an additional fee per tonne of trash processed. This would ultimately get passed on to consumers through increased prices for collection. Ideally colllectors should charge based on volume collected rather than a flat fee, thus providing an incentive to reduce waste.
