Just a quick history lesson...When Marie made this comment, the people of Paris were starving and rioting in the streets. There has always been an "historical twist" that this comment was made out of callous disregard for her fellow Parisians. But, Marie was better known (before the historical rewrite by the Revolutionaries) to be a more, or less giving royal than most in the French aristocracy. She had actually mde an inquiry as to the current food surplus that the royal treasury had available. She was informed that all there was available was "cake". Therefore, it would seem that at a time when the comment was made, it could also be taken to mean "then, if that is all there is, then let them eat cake." A much more alturistic reponse than dismissive remark. For those of us seeking to keep history from being rewritten in our own country, I thought I would share this "other side of history" to be fair. At this critical time in our own history when facts are just opinions and our own elected representatives are skewing reality with fiction, I hope that those few critical thinkers left in our society will take this small history lesson to heart and learn that history IS written by the victors. And, ask the question, "Twenty years from now what will our books say about life and government in America in 2009 and before?"
