If you're going to tax people, do an across the board tax. Do not tax a select group of people just because its 'easy money'. People are stressed out and being taxed at every turn, when will it stop? Once a tax has been inplemented it is impossible to reverse it. North Carolina has always been known as THE tobacco state, now they are going to tax the very people the cigarette companies targeted as customers? It is NOT FAIR to tax target groups just because they can get away with it.

If this were an 'across the board' equal tax for all, people would be in Raleigh protesting. Its much easier for the state to unfairly tax cigarettes and alcohol, so called 'sin tax'. If it doesn't apply to you then you don't care that someone is being unfairly targeted for tax revenue. It would be a totally different thing if it were taxing everyone equally. No taxation without representation, who is representing smokers and drinkers?

I Think it is so unfair her to target certain people. If the tax increase would affect her pocket we would have never heard of such bull...IF she wants to fix the problem in N.C. take a look at the WELFARE program. Teenagers drop out of school ,have babies and we the tax payers send them a check every month to stay at home and do nothing.Raleigh has created a system that even they cant fix,but the first thing she says raise taxs, this is one vote i totally regret i made in November.....

I don't like what smoking is doing to the young people today. I don't like the way this administration is distributing our hard earned tax money. We need to wake up and call our representatives. We still need to pray for our leaders. I hope that this tax will help people stop smoking. America is heading for a rude awakening with this administration (state and nation) and it's tax and spend plan. We are spending tax payer's money to air conditioning buildings that are housing boat replica's, studying hog smell in Florida, paying for abortions (I mean murdering) unborns. When are we going to go back to what this country was founded on: The Bible!

Has Bev Perdue forgotten, or has she ever known, what was the basis of this state's economy since before it achieved statehood? I have never smoked a cigarette and don't intend to start, but I do believe in other people's right to grow tobacco or smoke it. The economy is already in bad shape, so why pass a proposal that will cost jobs, possibly put some farmers out of business, and raise taxes on a select group of people? As I see it, this is a backhanded way of getting people to stop smoking and raise taxes at the same time. The problem is that it won't be only the smokers paying the price. Hey, politicians figure, tobacco is still legal so let's tax it to death.

I think that higher taxes on cigs. are getting out of hand , my husband and I are retired , worked hard all our life (paying taxes) we should be allowed to smoke cigarettes if we choose , we are living on a fixed income and can barely make it from month to month. Our insurance (BCBS) dropped our Optical, Dental, after paying into it for 35 yrs. it is hard enough to make a Honest living. Go after the illegal drugs if you need tax money!!! get people off of food stamps & AFDC welfare that DONOT need it and ABUSE IT.! Leave the people who Smoke Cigarettes ALONE!

What are they going to tax next when people start quiting smoking? I travel a great deal and will now purchase more cartons of cigarettes out of state where the prices are alot less. The state will be losing the tax from my purchases. I agree with the people that they should get more of the people out of the welfare system. It was set up for people who really needed it. These people who just get pregnant to get more money out of our system has to stop. States really have to start cutting their budgets like every working family has had to do with this econmy not keep taxing us to death.

Once again, smokers are the ones being targeted to help get the state out of mess they've created. Are smokers the only group they can come up with?? It is not fair to target one group or the other - they should both be taxed equally if there is going to be a tax!! I completely agree with "Big C" - I am regreting voting for this candidate and if she goes through with it, let's get her out the first chance we get!!

Had I known Bev Perdue would increase cigarette taxes prior to the election, she would have NEVER received my vote. It seems like smokers are always the target of these narrow minded officials who think they can make an easy buck off smokers. Maybe we should have a North Carolina Cigarette party similar to the Boston Tea Party. Hey Bev, I saw your inaugural gown in the History Museum on Monday. You didn't make any cuts there did you?

increasing the tax on cigarettes and alcohol isn't going to raise money for the state. The state is forcing people like me to quit. The rich aren't the smokers it is the middle and lower classes that smoke. My husband is unemployed, we've already cut out the our luxuries like going to dinner, movies, blockbuster and now we have to quit smoking and drinking. restaurants and bars will loose money forcing them to cut staff if only the rich can afford to go. this will increase unemployment causing more money loss for the state. If the state wants to make more money do like Virginia did, open the ABC stores on sunday. Sunday sports create a lot of ABC revenue for the state of Va. and at least one job opening per store. Now that's smarter than raising the tax of cigarettes!

i feel that raising taxes on cigs. is not a solution to any problems we have way to much on the table now that needs more concern than this. most of the smokers anyway are lower paid citizens. why are you targeting them, go for someone who gets pay checks like the rich and famous, and etc. we can't hardly afford toilet paper now to wipe up the mess you all have done for us, so give back lower prices to us work on something else. doctors fees heck, lets cut back on that, or medicines people can't afford, if you really look i'm sure theres someone, more interesting to pick on.
